Being a parent in today's technology is extremely difficult and creates many new challenges.

so these children who write these cruel things are actually learning that under the guise of free speech they can say these things and get away with it. would these things be classified as "free speech", because they are cruel but who can stop them??

I agree with Karen from MN - yes let's tape the bullies in action. Maybe if they saw themselves, they would feel shame and understand the pain they cause. All these stories are just too heartbreaking.

Okay, Dr. Phil, the boys don't text bad photos?

I hope that the kids who drive others to suicide find ways to deal with the guilt they will inevitably feel at some point. Teaching the victims how to deal with bullying is one angle, but I think the real solution lies in understanding why the bullies do it in the first place and helping them overcome their own insecurities (which I think is probably the motivation for bullying, in many cases) so they dont' feel the need to hurt, to have control etc..

The lack of empathy, compassion and plain o' decency must be taught. It must be taught at home from day.

First we have to educate kids don't support the bullies they should ignore those and speak to some one who they can trust

Quite agree with Dr Phil. Cyber bullying is bad. What makes it possible is the multi-ID thing.

I'd sure watch those cruel kids....not to different from kids who torture animals.

Society is just out of control with a level of decency. This is too sad. The Mom and Dad have to be so distraught.

Also parents have to be pro-active! Computers have to be in the kitchen or common area of the house. Cell phones have to be checked every night.

Parents also need to check in with their kids. You have to look at the whole child philosophy when parenting. You have to work it 24/7 with no holidays!

It is the overall lack of empathy that we are seeing manifested in the rash of bullying today

I'm curious about the nature of sex education in schools these days? I have no kids..but adolescents seem to need a different kind of approach esp. in this day and age of cell phones and the internet. Call me old school but I would have my kids stay without cell phones until they turn 18..simply because I'm not sure what they are using those cell phones for. They can use payphones.

I think that cyberbullying is a universal problem. It is not age restricted.

    @vic,
It's even more than just "gossip" today! At times, there are pictures, and "other" people saying things in "postings", not just what someone said. It's right there in their face in black & white type. (plus the photos & videos, etc)

Your segments on bullying this week have been a valuable tool in my classroom. I repeatedly visit with my students about tolerance for others in society. Watching clips from your shows are making my students more compassionate and empathetic. Thank you!

How awful. I'm just so sorry for her parents. We have to do something. This is more than any one family group can handle. It's too much. The internet was never meant to be this kind of thing. It was supposed to be more for educational purposes.

Hope Witsell's experience is such a tragedy. It breaks my heart. Question for all the bully experts - why isn't there any focus on disciplining the bullies? Seriously all the stories of the young people being bullied are heart breaking but there's something missing from the dialogue - why aren't the bullies punished?! There is a perception that the bullies can just do whatever they want when they want and schools are helpless. If the bullies aren't disciplined then their behavior is considered acceptable.

From what I have heard and read, many schools don't take harassment very seriously. And what do they do about cyber bullying reports? I don't know. I'll bet many school districts haven't even formed policies on how to deal with it.

    Very sad story regarding Hope.
We have no conception or understanding how the acceptance of violent wars effects our society including our children.

We should put the cameras on the bullies and ask them why they feel the need to pick on others. As I see it they are the ones with the issues. Maybe if we make them explain their behavior in public they would be less likely to bully.

It was just a matter of time before sexting happened. The technology is seductive especially for kids who are impulsive and don't weigh the consequences.

It's sad that you can tell kids until you are blue in the face not to do certain things but then it takes something like this to get them to realize that it is that serious

When students are faced with possible jail time and "Obstruction of Justice" charges they wake up or tell them about the Sexual Offenders list.

Many casual effects for bullying. You cannot blame schools or teachers. Its a problem for all of the US. Starting with full community support.

Bullying is not staying with one person for that period of time or with the 'group'....it's spreading far and wide, reaching everyone, and it is always with these people. (computers, phones, neighbors, etc)

Why should Todd Palin be sending irate e-mails for his wife? Shouldn't she be sending her own emails?

Dems should trumpet a bit more their own accomplishments.
