As residents return, utility pledges money for California suburb

San Bruno, California (CNN) - California utility Pacific Gas and Electric will set aside up to $100 million to help rebuild parts of the San Francisco suburb ravaged by a deadly gas explosion last week, the company's president said Monday.
The money includes payments of up to $50,000 per household for interim living expenses and money to compensate the city for San Bruno for the costs it incurred since Thursday night's pipeline explosion and fire, PG&E President Chris Johns told reporters. Other funds will help the city rebuild things like parks and sidewalks, he said.
"I realize money can't return lives, can't heal scars and can't replace memories. Some of the things that have been lost, you can't put a value to," Johns said. "But there does come a time for healing and for rebuilding, and we are committed to helping that happen."

The adage that "three accidents must occur before a stop signal will be placed to protect an intersection" comes to mind. This is evidence of our nations aging infrastructure. The issue of providing funding for repairing and modernizing our nations electric, natural gas, water and sewage systems must be taken seriously or we will experience more tragic events such as this.
As a American latina, I thank it's a shame that with all the problems we have in this world that Americans are still talking about our elected president. President Obama is an American as must as I am and I don't understand why politicians need to question where he was born. He's an American end of story. I for one am very proud of President Obama and his staff's hard work with the war in Iraq, health care and foreclosure assistance programs. With all this President must have on his mind I can't believe that politicians want to discuss his heritage. I will not vote for any politician wasting energy on such non-sense.

Isn't PG&E the same company that Erin Brokovitch and company sued for the Chromium in the water in California?
The radiant heat from those flames must have been horrific. The man says he can't touch anything out on his deck – I'm surprised he could stand out there to film because of the heat. I hope he didn't lose his house but as close as he seems to be to the flames I imagine he did. Hope the gas company helps all the people who lost everything they had.
