Suspect in Maryland hostage situation published angry online manifesto

CNN Wire Staff

(CNN) - The man believed to be holding at least one hostage at the Discovery Channel headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, has been identified as James Lee, a law enforcement source tells CNN.

Lee is an environmental protester who has been publishing criticisms of the network, according to a senior law enforcement official close to the investigation.

An angry manifesto posted on a website called SaveThePlanetProtest.com repeatedly refers to humans as "filth" and demands that the Discovery Channel "stop encouraging the birth of any more parasitic human infants."

"Civilization must be exposed for the filth it is," the 1,149-word statement says.

This is the act of a lone individual and does not represent liberal or right wing extremist. Extremism is what it is weather it's Glenn Beck, Sharon Angle or Fox News. We all should be concerned about those who use the public airwaves to spread the rhetoric that generates foul sentiment. This is a serious matter that could have grave consequences.

Liberals he is one of yours,

In the 2008 incident, Lee threw the money into the air as part of a multi-day protest against the Silver Spring-based company's programming, which he believed had little to do with saving the planet, according to the Gazette. His crusade, he told the paper, began after losing his job in San Diego, reading "Ishmael," a novel by Daniel Quinn and watching Al Gore's documentary "An Inconvenient Truth."

Does it make you feel superior to label an apparently troubled individual liberal?
