Dry Run to Blow up U.S. Airliner?: Join the Live Chat

[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/01/02/liveblogfinal.copy.jpg]

We're following breaking news. Was it a practice run to blow up a U.S. jetliner? Bottles of liquid with watches and cell phones attached, inside checked luggage on a flight out of Chicago. Two men are in custody in the Netherlands. We'll have the latest and tonight's other news.

Scroll down to join the live chat during the program. It's your chance to share your thoughts on tonight's headlines. Keep in mind, you have a better chance of having your comment get past our moderators if you follow our rules.

Here are some of them:

1) Keep it short (we don't have time to read a "book")
2) Don't write in ALL CAPS (there's no need to yell)
3) Use your real name (first name only is fine)
4) No links
5) Watch your language (keep it G-rated; PG at worst - and that includes $#&*)

It is not surprising that in the US people in power lack a moral compass when it comes to moeny and financial and poloitical patronage. The supreme court equates money to (political) speech so money by US law permeates politics. This is dramatically different from normal democracies which seek to ensure that each person has an equal political voice rather than a voice determined by wealth.

"If Johnson didn't recognize the names of the children in her own family she is incompetent and should resign."

    Agreed

You have to ask yourself what else this woman is ignorant of.

The CBC is obviously not monitoring who gets this money, it is pretty obvious now

@Mike, formerly from Syracuse, "Given the documented corruption, I wouldn't say the CBC is revered."

I think it is safe to say that this isn't the only corruption going on in the CBC.

I know that they must have known the rules of giving a scholarship. That's the reason why they don't make it known to students who might qualify!

    Nina,
Yes, there will be investigation again congresswoman right now.

This wasn't just one child, it was a number of children.

The process has to be fair. It is hard to imagine that she gave 1/3 of the money to her own family. Very bad.

It matters because it is not fair. Nepotism.

Sounds like Rep. Johnson has a cohesive plan to circumvent the derailment of her political career.

If even a fraction of what Andersson described is true the congresswoman is horribly in the wrong.
The US should question why in the US educationally qualified kids need to "beg" for money from anyone in order to go to college. Allowing this sort of patronage to anyone is obsecene.
University education should be made available kids who meet academic requirements as it is in most of europe.

    Bloggers,
Good point there...... She was not supposed gifts for her family and she will step down her position Rep.

  18. Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA

Wow. I appreciate trying to get to the facts but AC seems to be drawing conclusions as part of the questioning. I also think it's a little early to ask for conclusive measures or a plan that is being actively pursued at this point in time.

    It certainly warrants more investigation

The abuse of the CBC and the system is sad,,,,But it doesn't suprise me. There is so much of this happening everywhere.

  22. Mike, formerly from Syracuse

This woman isn't answering the questions.

    August 30, 2010 at 10:08 pm |
  23. Heather - Spokane, WA

If they are saying that there are not enough kids wanting the scholarships then they need to do more advertising in the schools for it

    August 30, 2010 at 10:08 pm |
  24. Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio

Anderson this woman is unbelievable! She is just trying to make excuses.

That she didn't know that she couldn't give it to a family member – Please!

There are many businesses that will not hire people that are related to work in the same office/place...

Does anyone 'really' believe that statement, that Congressman Johnson "didn't know the rules"?

    August 30, 2010 at 10:08 pm |
  26. Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA

Wow!!! Not good news for me (she) Rep. Eddie Johnson is very bad move to gift her family by scholarship

Looks like more and more corruption charges will now come out and its election season, people.

Stimulus funds have been distributed to so many organizations and at so many levels with not a whole lot of scrutiny. That will only add icing to the cake.

I am sure there will be more on both sides up until the elections are over.

Unwanted scholarships is hooey. There are so many students who drop out because of financial problems or they can't support themselves through school and giv e their school work what it deserves.

    August 30, 2010 at 10:05 pm |
  31. Lori, CA

It seems that there is much more to this story about the scholarships.

    August 30, 2010 at 10:05 pm |
  32. Vickie

No way to spin this. Congresswoman Johnson should save herself the embarrassment and just admit the wrong doing.

    August 30, 2010 at 10:05 pm |

"She didn't know the rules"..that's a poor excuse.

  34. Emily

Wow, if I had children in her district the last few years, I'd be furious over that statement! (that there was no one else worthy enough)

    August 30, 2010 at 10:05 pm |
  35. Heather - Spokane, WA

This lady has been in congress for that amount of time and has been in charge of giving scholarships to kids foe that long and claims that she did not know the rules for giving them? I find that really hard to believe, especially when she has been giving them to her own family more than once

    August 30, 2010 at 10:04 pm |
  36. Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA

Congresswoman Johnson is a gross embarrassment to the CBC. When a politician is sworn in is there any reference to ethical behavior? I'm just waiting for the lynch mob to go on the attack and wondering what the (technical) angle will be?

    August 30, 2010 at 10:04 pm |

Hearing about people, like Congresswoman Johnson that abuse the system like this is really sad! 🙁
