Last U.S Combat Convoy Leaves Iraq: Join the Live Chat

[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/01/02/liveblogfinal.copy.jpg]

The last U.S. brigade combat team has left Iraq, leaving about 56,000 U.S. troops in the country. So, what happens now? We're digging deeper. Plus, we're tracking the cash needed for the N.Y. Islamic Center near Ground Zero. Some have claimed the money will come from sponsors of terrorism. We're keeping them honest. Plus, Dr. Laura Schlessinger on her racial rant. She's tonight's 'Big 360° Interview."

Scroll down to join the live chat during the program. It's your chance to share your thoughts on tonight's headlines. Keep in mind, you have a better chance of having your comment get past our moderators if you follow our rules.

Here are some of them:

1) Keep it short (we don't have time to read a "book")
2) Don't write in ALL CAPS (there's no need to yell)
3) Use your real name (first name only is fine)
4) No links
5) Watch your language (keep it G-rated; PG at worst - and that includes $#&*)

    For some people I don't think that anything that President Obama has to say can be satisfying to them. I haven't given up on him and I think he's really working hard to try to find solutions to get us out of some of the mess that were in.

    Like many words in our language, there are different meanings and effects. Sometimes a word can be affectionate and sometimes derogatory. I truly believe it is not the "word" but the "usage" of the word that is the issue. Even though it appears the termination of Laura's show will not be a great loss (I have only heard a little of it) to society, it is unfortunate that an uproar over something so silly as her trying to make a point has to play out this way.

    On Sept. 14, the US House of Representatives passed, 223-199, the ominous federal “anti-hate” bill, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2005

    @Emily I totally agree with you. I simply think she might be loosing her cognitive thought process. She should know better. Don't you think?

    I hear you, Betty Ann, but it certainly abounds, doesn't it? The automatic tendency to call names. Even where I work, some of the most highly placed individuals call others names right and left. I have to wonder sometimes if I'm back in junior high school! I think on an emotional level, that's almost the case with many adults.

    Does the President have to walk on eggshells? If he doesn't say something and stays too quiet there is concern or if he speaks up on something there is concern. If the President's political team has to guard his every step and every word, not much will get done in this time of office.

    obama said he would get certain things done he is a man of his words....for that alone i will vote for again and to make it sweet the troops are coming home from iraq just like he said ....he helped the economy from completly crashing.....what a guy....he says what he believes based on facts.....not based on populiarity....what

    I really liked ed's writing today, and David's comment last night about the Mosque issue...I don't care if the President's having a bad August, We the People are having bad YEARS!

  24. Sharon Hastings

    I agree with David Gergen. This administration has been bombarded with horrible problems and plenty of distractions. And nobody wants to focus on their accomplishments which are many.

    August 18, 2010 at 10:52 pm |
  25. Emily

    @Samantha Rowley,

    I agree with you re. "all words" ...if people would just expand their vocabulary, they would not have to stoop to such derogatory terms.

    August 18, 2010 at 10:51 pm |
  26. Libby

    I think the media is blowing the mosque statement by the president out of proportion.

    Oh goodness, charlie, I grew up in the 50's and 60's and can't tell you how many words were banned to us then that are common conversationally now!

    August 18, 2010 at 10:51 pm |
  28. Emily

    @BettyAnn, Nacogdoches,TX,
    Dr. Laura will never admit that She was wrong...in her mind, she is the victim...the 'victim' does not apologize.

    I can only relate to this by derogatory words for women. It offends me when someone says it to me. I shrug it off but it still stings. They're right when they say don't let it have power over you but we're all different.

    It is unfortunate that the media is painting a picture that suggests the danger is over as the combat troops leave. We are all well aware that we have trained for and will be entering a combat zone. We are entering an unstable situation that will require a US military presence with combat troops for some time to come.

    Are they seriously debating banning certain words?
    What country is this? North Korea?

    August 18, 2010 at 10:45 pm |
  32. Sharon Hastings

    It's not just the n-word. It's any derogatory way you describe someone that's offensive. But there are certain words that are just very ugly and that's one.
