Evening Buzz: 'Terror Babies' Taking Aim at U.S.?

Maureen Miller
AC360° Writer

Tonight on 360°, we dig deeper into one of the most explosive claims being made in the battle over immigration. It's what we reported last night about how some Texas Republican lawmakers are claiming that illegal immigrants are having 'terror babies.'

Here's the accusation: Children born on U.S. soil to illegal immigrants, who are granted U.S. citizenship under the 14th amendment, are taken back to their home countries to be raised as terrorists. Then decades later the children, now adults, could be sent back to attack the U.S.

This controversial claim is linked to Texas Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert.

"I was talking to a retired FBI agent, who said that one of the things they were looking at were terrorist cells overseas who had figured out how to game our system, and it appeared they would have young women, who became pregnant, who would get them into the United States to have a baby," Gohmert said on the House floor on June 24. "Then they could return, where they could be raised and coddled as future terrorists. And then, they could return, 20 or 30 years in the future because they realize how stupid we are being in this country," he added.

Gohmert mentioned a retired FBI agent as his source. Then later he changed his story to say his source was actually a terrorist grandmother.

Then last night on 360°, another Texas lawmaker, Debbie Riddle, came on the program. The Republican member of the Texas State Legislature said her office is getting information on the so-called terror babies from former FBI officials. We called the FBI today to see what they thought of these claims. We'll have that for you tonight.

We also have a remarkable report from 360's Gary Tuchman. He has an up close look at the birth tourism movement. He'll introduce us to a Mexican woman who came to Texas on a tourist visa while pregnant, specifically to give birth to a U.S. citizen.

"I wanted him to have duel citizenship, so one day, if he moves to the United States he will not have any problems," she told Gary about her now 3-year-old son.

We'll also take you inside the hunt for a serial killer who's accused of stabbing to death five people and wounding 15 others. He may be linked to attacks in three states and authorities say he appears to be choosing his victims by the color of their skin. Investigators say the man often pretends to need help before stabbing his victims.

Join us for these stories and much more starting at 10 p.m. ET. See you then.

good "morning" from austria(4:20 am)....all I can say about this isue is,that this is typically american...not for my point of view, but for at least most of the european people this is an indicator of how ridiculous "americans" are ..i think, bringing up these stories is typically republican...especially people from texas...we've heard the former fbi official...in fact, bringing up this issue would allow to even bring it to a much wider audience and could be sort of a source for people having objects like these...let me qoute that fine lady from yesterday "if they are over here illegally, they are not here legally".....amazing intelligence...once again..LANCE MILLER.."the child of an illegal immigrant is illegal too"....how can a child ever be illegal??since for a person being illegal requires to break a law, right??and how can a newborn break any law??

Mr. Anderson, I watched your interview with the FBI director who described the terror babies idea as OBSURD. I' afraid he is wrong. i have been working in Iraq for since 2003 and watched closely how Iran and Al Qaida are training babies to grow up and become terrorists with immense hate towards America. Not only is that but Iran actually is encouraging Shiite Iraqi families to migrate to the USA but to keep their culture, religious believes and loyalty to Iran intact. Iran guarantees the loyalty of their followers through religion institutions and by taking advantage being in a free country that respect people freedom. FBI should plant eyes and ears in the praying places (Husainiyat) of those families to be fully aware of Iran's evil plan. I have watched with surprise and sorrow many fanatic Muslim families granted legal immigration status to the USA while other secular open minded good people were denied that privilege.

Texas lawmaker, Debbie Riddle, just made that story up. She wants that White vote. O.M.G this is what we have here in Texas. I believe that more of these Republicans come out of the wood work. More Democrats will take place of these crazies. She looks like she needs to wear braces. She looks and talks like a hate Monger with that cute Smile. I did not vote for her. Thank you for that story Cooper, you seem to reveal the hate out of people. FBI does not call and tell you things like that over the phone....uhmmmmm.. They make it a point to talk to you in person. Riddle made that story up. "OH let's blame this one on Obama" that will be the next story. Besides who is she referring too? "THE MEXICANS?"

The number of babies born in Texas of non-US citizens in 2009 was approximately 63,000. Hence, if the Texas Rep. claims that there are 60,000 children born to illegals in Texas, this assumes that only 3000 were born to legals. That does not seem reasonable. I suggest that knowledge of these facts are essential if you want to be included in any credible conversation.

Anderson - If you remember the Comptroller of TX on your show said that the illgals were benefiting Texans. The average is not that many mothers who come over the border just to have a baby. Not enough to change the Constitution. Our writers of the constitution did not even know that illegals would come to US. We can do it in a different way By not allowing people who are pregant to come over here. That would solve the problem. That is why we need to Immigration Reform Quickly. They need to get in to works now!But we do not need to change our constitution. I doubt if that happens.

Just a continuation of the Republicans fear mongers, be afraid, be very afraid, we need to take our country back. The only problem, they can't figure out what they are going to do when they take their country back from their ignorance. May God continue to watch over our babies and these fear mongering fools!!

Although the Texas representative was not very convincing and I personally doubt the validity of this story I don't see why everyone would think that it is beyond comprehension. One thing that 9-11 should have taught us is that terrorists are very calculating and patient individuals. It was several years between the first and second attacks on the WTC. I would not put it beyond the realm of possibility that terrorists would calculate many, many years in advance. They know that they are in it for the long haul. Also, haven't we uncovered terrorist sleeper cells over the past couple of years?

    August 11, 2010 at 10:21 pm |

Unfortunately our government has lied in the past about matters of national security, so it is of no surprise that they are denying that "terror babies" are a reality. We have allowed the U.S. to become a haven for the world's worst, the forgotten, the damned, and the poor. And in the process diluting the American Way of life. No other country in the world would allow Americans to migrate and take away jobs from its citizens. Yet our government welcomes everyone with open arms and subsequently turns its back on Americans.

I`M NOT SURE ABOUT TERROR babies per se,but I do believe that this administration`s failure to protect our borders has definitly left us very open to have terrorist come across our borders without too much hassle
I suggest that you interview President Obama & Eric Holder to see where they stand on protecting our borders from terrorists, not rep Riddle

It seem that this "conspiracy" that these lawmakers have uncovered was taken from the plot of the recent movie "Salt".

Seriously, why would an enemy of the US invest 20plus years of time and resources in raising a "terror baby" when there are full grown U.S. citizens willing to carry out domestic attacks? That seems like a terribly inefficient strategy.

Well first of, isn't peculiar that all the information from "former FBI agentes" is coming from Texas.
Now onto my real point, and this is just a thought: when you growp up knowing that your family and your religious belives are being prosecuted each and every day doesn't really require a plan for heatred. That pretty much sounds like common sense. I read somewhere that one countrys heroe is another countrys terrorist.

  14. Bill Braun

I simply don't believe that the Texas Republicans are being truthful. It sounds to me like propaganda. It makes no sense at all that terrorists would wait till babies had grown into adults...many years forward...only to return to the U.S. to effect damage upon U.S. citizens when, the terrorists themselves, can enter and wreak havoc, now.

Sounds like Texas Republicans need to concentrate more on the business at hand...creating jobs for their constituents.

The way people are reporting outlandish issues ("Terror babies", "Birthers", etc.) reminds me of these two famous quotes:
“If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough, it will be believed”
“The great masses of the people will more easily fall victim to a big lie than to a small one.”
    Mein Kampf Adolf Hitler
Seems like he knew how to influence people.

Wow, how extremely convenient that this "terror babies" information from former FBI agents comes up so soon after the call to repeal the 14th amendment. Now we should all join the republicans to repeal that amendment because if any illegal immigrant has a baby here and that baby is naturalized – well, then they are clearly trying to raise a terrorist.
If this was such a big issue, why were only these two selected people contacted? And how come they were supposedly contacted by former FBI agents and not current ones?
And if terrorists want to attack the US, do you think they'll care about having citizenship? No! They'll find a way in, one way or another.
There are just so many things wrong with the statements that were made by these Texas government officials.
I'm from Texas and these people are embarrassing me!!!

  17. Brount N.

Anderson, do follow up with the Congressman and the Texas State Representative.

Hold their feet to the fire to come out on national television with hard evidence to substantiate their absurd statements regarding so-called Terror Babies.

Being the cowards they are, these two will never appear on your programme as that would mean they would have to reveal themselves for what they are, two STUPID PEOPLE totally unworthy of representing anyone but other stupid people !!!

  18. Linda

Why do people think the idea of raising "terror babies" is so far fetched?
Who ever thought 911 would ever happen before it did?

    August 11, 2010 at 10:18 pm |

this is in reference to Ms.DERBY' s comment on terror babies. I think she had absolutely no idea of what she was talking about. At first she admitted the fact that they had evidence on the same issue and later she contradicted that statement by saying that they are still gathering information. She seemed so unsure about what she was talking about and it seemed like it was her personal opinion.

The terrorists probably never thought of doing this. But now these hateful fear-mongers have once again used their creative minds to give the terrorists a new idea.

I have lived in Saudi ARabia for 12 years. I have taught many Saudi children and women English during this time. While you may not be able to say the term 'terror babies', the fact of the matter is the Saudi women go to the USA while they are pregnant to have their children born on American soil in order to gain a US passport. This may well come back to 'bite' the States... Wake up America! Start changing your laws so that people who have nothing good to say about your country can't walk in and have their babies on your soil and then be given passports to them on a golden platter...

Well Anderson...glad you had the former FBI agent on tonight. Last night I thought I was in another country. Just unbelieveable! What is happing in our beloved country> Terrorist babies...Good Grief.

Anderson, This terror baby issue is simiar to the the craziness associated with the birther movement – that somehow Barach Obama's parents planted a birth notice in a Hawaii newspaper so that decades later he could become President of the US all the while he is not a citizen. This all is worse than "absurd"; it's sick and just another attempt to generate fear among low information people.

The Republican Party should be forcibly disbanded. Debbie Biddle is case in point. Are representatives like Biddle and Gohmert actually sufficiently stupid to believe that people will believe such outrageous unfounded claims? Sadly, i believe, plenty of ppl will believe these boobs. Nonetheless, these 2 are a sad testament to the ignorance and intolerance that remains pervasive in this country.

It must be very hot nowadays in Texas, and those politician had a heat stroke. Never hear so stupid idea. I guess those congressman wanted to appear on TV some how. That will be good that media do not comments on those "says" that will only get worst in the days to come, like Obama not being a citizen.
No wonder the country in such mess with politicians like that running the country....

The idea of terror babies does seem a little far fectched However, if 30 years ago you told me that radical jihadist would fly airplanes into the trade towers, I would have said that was far far fecthed, too.

We used to think – if you want to find a terrorist – you had to think like a mountain goat. Today, if you want to find a terrorist – sadly, you have to think like an American.

Is it not obvious that some politicians will do ANYTHING to get elected to an office, including using shrouded race baiting and fear mongering to curry favor? We are so much better than this ! We deserve better than this from our elected officials..Throw the bums out !!!

Maybe we should just let Texas secede from the Union if it is going to be inundated with terror babies.

I am embarrassed to say I live in Texas and have to sit and watch one more off the chart right wing Texas GOP tale of fright mongering. Representative Riddells interview aside from being short on "facts" and evidence was or should have been an embarassment to her constituents (at least thinking ones)

You ever notice if you want the truth, you should talk to anyone other than a politician, thanks to your retired FBI official adviser. I imagine that Riddle wishes she had a real FBI official.

This person has no real evidence on why people are making or thinking of making these "terrorist babies". Real evidence would be nice yet this idea or rumor is just absurd. This is very false I believe.

Oh I forgot the FBI wasn't aware of Tim McVeigh or the 9/11 hijackers either, were they. Matter of fact didn't they discount and laugh at the idea some people would steer a plane into the WTC also, But they are credible, yeah ok.

The idea of 'terror babies' is the theme behind Angelina Jolie's movie 'SALT' which was released 2 weeks ago in theaters. So, apparently, elected officials are borrowing intelligence from the movie theater!!! (scratcing my head?)

Anderson...the issue here is the "terrorists babies" guess what? .it can happen..why point fingers at the guy in the congress...the problem with today is we are pointing fingers ALL the time. I think it is great that he brought this point up. WE NEED OUR EYES OPEN BEFORE OUR BACK IS AGAINST THE WALL...If we don't imagine we will have another 9/11..way to go Anderson and make this congressman feel small, I personally feel he was being a good citizen!

    August 11, 2010 at 10:09 pm |
  44. Heyward

They scoffed and poo-pooed when people said some folks were planning to steer airplanes into the World Trade Center didn't they. And look what happened. Anything is possible so I wouldn't be so eager to laugh or discount this notion. Terrorist plan long term , Americans can't think past their last meal.

Its not as complicated as the lawmakers are making it. Everyone is trying not to offend someone. Its almost heartbreaking to listen to the argument. They are babies true but terror babies is a bit much. What part of illegal immigrant is not clear. If both parents are illegal then so is the child.

    August 11, 2010 at 10:09 pm |

Terror Babies? Mosque at ground zero? Boy you guys are giving those Islamic extremists a laugh if this is a serious issue on Prime Time television.

    August 11, 2010 at 9:49 pm |
  49. Lance Miller

Anderson, I think the issue of "terror babies" and " illegal immigration" is convoluted. It's really quite simple. I think the "poison fruit" rule applies. The fruit of a poison tree is poisonous and therefore, in law, inapplicable. The child of an illegal immigrant is illegal too. Very simple.

  50. Annie Kate

Terrorist babies.....I find that extremely far fetched. Sounds like one of those Texas tall tales we used to read in high school English class – except those were funny. I would find it hard to believe that young women would go along with this – who wants to have a baby that they know will be raised as a terrorist to most likely die young? It will be interesting to see what you all found out from the FBI.
