The senator asked some hard questions that I wish NOAA and EPA had better answers for; are the dispersants being used safe and what effect are they having on the ecosystem in the Gulf? We used DDT for quite a while before we became aware of the dangers it posed to certain bird species with the bald eagle become dangerously endangered and taking years to rebound as a species. This oil spill is going to leave a serious enough aftermath that will last years without adding to it what might be harmful effects of the dispersants. As the Senator told NOAA – they should feel more than an interest in these questions – they should be on the edge of their chair.
