New Oil Spill Access Rules: Join the Live Chat

[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/01/02/liveblogfinal.copy.jpg]

New rules in the Gulf will make it more difficult to see the disturbing reality of this disaster. Despite promises of transparency and full access - photographers, reporters and the general public now could face fines and felony charges if they get to close to response vessel or booms. We're keeping them honest. Plus, Anderson's exclusive interview with Jimmy Buffett. What the superstar thinks of the spill and how the area will recover.

Scroll down to join the live chat during the program. It's your chance to share your thoughts on tonight's headlines. Keep in mind, you have a better chance of having your comment get past our moderators if you follow our rules.

Here are some of them:

1) Keep it short (we don't have time to read a "book")
2) Don't write in ALL CAPS (there's no need to yell)
3) Use your real name (first name only is fine)
4) No links
5) Watch your language (keep it G-rated; PG at worst - and that includes $#&*)

These new rules are dangerous to our planet.

Priorities are out of order. Continue to "break" the rules. Without images
and constant reporting how will the public know the truth. Without journalists and photographers public awareness will continue to fade... which must be what the new rules are about?

They don't won't people to see what they are NOT doing! This is sad and disgusting that our government is trying to hide this from us!

Good evening Anderson, 360 Team, Jo Ann, Mike, David, Megan, Nicole, Isabel, Sree, Starr, Gloria, & Bloggers!

I'm shocked that Thad Allen is barring the media from seeing what is going on...this is outrageous!

I hear you, Karin Urban from Berlin....I'm feeling it's a scarce commodity all along too.

I remember people saying a little bit ago that this was going to be Obama's Katrina and it looks like it is, he has not done anything that he said he said he was going to do. If he did, this would probably be over with now

It has been so long. I am so devastated by the oil spill, it has been too hard for me to watch ac360.
Yet, he is so caring and working so hard to keep us informed we all need to support Anderson Cooper's valiant effort and make it absolutely certain that the network knows that he is necessary as he is the one that we trust..

And so the cover up begins. So much for the free press.

I live on the Gulf Coast of Alabama, I've been a Realtor here for 16 years. I'm praying that BP can stop the oil, but I don't have faith in them anymore. I also know for a fact that locals living close to the beach are getting sick, my grown daughter for one – from what? The oil and or/the dispersants. She went out of town yesterday and for the first time in weeks did not wake up w/a headache, nose bleed, nausea, blood shot eyes, etc. I don't trust anything the EPA, BP or our Government is telling us about the air quality – I know too many people who are sick.

Please don't leave. Please stay until they can no longer deny you the access that we the American people need because that will still only be a fraction of the reality that is going on down under the water of the gulf.

Just let them try to arrest or fine Billy. The blowback will be tremendous. I challenge all media and politicians to ignore said "rule" and operate as though you live in a free country. At least we used to.

Transparency – I missed it on either side just from the beginning!

Right on Billy, This is our lands. I hope you can help with bringing us the real story.

    Anderson-
I'm from Illinois. I was planning to come down to New Orleans to do a documentary on the leak. If I can't get within 65 feet of the coast, how am I supposed to get the footage needed to tell the story?

Maybe that will become the focus of the documentary.

This is becoming a government cover up and they along with BP are trying to sweep this oil disaster under the rug, The US govt., is complicit and are partnered with BP OIl instead of being on the side of Americans. This is a disgrace and Thad Allen should be fired. Where is the army? Now you see as Billy said that the government is inept in stopping the leak. Denying the media access is tantamount to censorship and a communist regime. Obama is running this country like China.

Good evening, people. This is getting so contentious and confusing...I hope there is not more in-fighting than cooperation going on.

Billy, right on about the actions, results and the notion of news being straight and then being complementary!

I realized a long time ago that Admiral Allen is just a BP stooge. I've never seen anyone that looked so much like he is just repeating BP lies when he speaks....... really pathetic

    July 1, 2010 at 10:07 pm |
  18. Samantha Rowley - Nashville, TN

I think it's time for Admiral Allen to come back on AC360 to explain these new rules. Thanks Anderson for telling it like it is and keep fighting for our right to "see" what's happening each day. Now matter how distubring the pictures may be, we need to know.

Once again, Billy speaks the truth.

Anderson, you should go out with your crew and take telescopic lenses.

The new rules are ridiculous but what did anyone expect from Obos team. The only thing transparent is the fact the leaders are clueless. Let the locals do their job

    new rules....

this does not surprise me... it once again shows who is in charge of the United States government ... Big Oil......

  22. Sharon Hastings

Good evening Anderson and everyone. Continued thanks Anderson for your ongoing coverage of such a terrible event on our planet. These new rules are questionable. It seems like they want to limit negative press but maybe I've just become too cynical and suspicious. Transparency has become such a buzz word, promised then forgotten.

  23. Joe

Why no criticism of Obama? He's ultimately in charge. You keep blaming Thad Allen, but no criticism of Obama, why is that?

It sounds to me like B.P. owns Obama they must be getting ready to fund his next election .

    Tranparency? Call it "Opaqueness"!

    July 1, 2010 at 10:06 pm |
  26. Sree, Richmond, VA

Anderson, it also hurts to see you explain in detail in so many ways and so many fashions that you are not the enemy!

I guess any one who is armed with truth is deemed harmful

    July 1, 2010 at 10:05 pm |
  27. Sonia Howell

Our government, once again, We are beeing blocked out. this is not transparencay. This is an outrage!!

  28. Linda in Arizona

It's completely obvious whose side the government is on, and who they're really working for. How long before Thad Allen goes to work for bp officially? That has been in the works for a long time.

What kind of police state has the Gulf become? Anderson – more details on this rule, please – is this a new federal rule – which agency is enforcing this – pursuant to what legal authority?

P.S. what about the BP "Reporters' do the laws apply to them??

    July 1, 2010 at 10:04 pm |
  33. Sree, Richmond, VA

Seems like a major PR effort and lobbying from BP resulting in distortion of truth.

Yeah, Anderson, I remember – there were 20 guys around the gull and two more would scare the word.

    Transparency, is almost virtual!

    July 1, 2010 at 10:04 pm |
  34. Amanda Fort Erie Ontario

That new law is Outrageous what the government is doing! No help, now no documenting! People are getting hurt not knowing what is really going on. I'm just sickened ..

    July 1, 2010 at 10:04 pm |
  35. Heather - Spokane, WA

With all of these new rules for the media it sure sounds like BP and the government are covering their backsides

What about air space to photograph .

Tansparency from BP and our Government?! Give me a break! With all the lies they've told from the beginning, what else can we expect? They also need to let a woman take over the clean up control – that's what someone like I can do best – and I'll have the oil stopped before it hits anymore wetlands or beaches.

Good evening everyone in America, good morning to sleepless souls in Europe,

I just realized that by today the first half year of 2010 is over. In retrospect it seems to be dominated by disasters: Haiti, Chile, Iceland and now of course to catastrophy in the Gulf. Not to mention the stock markets and the economy. I hate to be pessimistic, but is there a silver lining – anywhere??
