Tracking Hurricane Alex: Join the Live Chat

[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/01/02/liveblogfinal.copy.jpg]

Hurricane Alex hits land along the west coast of the Gulf of Mexico and is having an impact at the oil spill site. We'll have the latest developments on the storm. Plus, see how BP is trying to shutdown its own safety watchdog unit, which was created under Congressional pressure in the wake of BP oil spills in Alaska and that devastating fire and explosion at its refinery in Texas City, Texas in 2005.

Joy, they used to say Bush would act before thinking. Obama thinks about everything that's right under his nose but doesn't act.

I have to wonder what the relatives of the men currently working on BP's other wells are thinking. Are they wondering if BP cut corners on those wells as well? They need to shut down those wells and inspect them before BP is allowed to drill again.

Of course BP should (and would want to ) shut down Any safety watchdog unit associated with it.....duh.

I think the only way we are going to get BP to do ANYthing is to have Criminal charges filed against it for the deaths of the 11 men in the initial incident.

Thank you Anderson for continuing to remind people (&BP) that there were 11 PEOple that were killed in the explosion.

God bless the families and friends of those who lost their lives in the BP explosion,

On the Al Gore issue, the local news has indicated the she has a piece of clothing that has his sperm on it. She wants someone to do a DNA test.

What's not been reported is that the woman was a Gore supporter and a liberal. Her liberal acquaintances were urging her to drop it.

her words were very moving – there is a situation that is just not fair – that woman did not deserve to lose the love of her life – nor did anyone else

This is very painful to listen to...my heart breaks for her. 🙁
I don't know how she is getting the words out.

LOOK! > We have 49,000 workers, over 100 skimmers, 547 vessels, 6 centrifuge machines, and 2000 pieces of additional equipment along with Zeolite an advanced technology. During Katrina we had 5350 people working. If they "act" like they don't have the help they need. Do not buy it!

If we put just 1 of our workers every 20 feet. We would stretch out and cover 204 miles of coast. That is just our company.

We are getting no response. Please "keep them honest"

The alleged victim in the Gore case deserves a fair hearing. Her delay in coming forward was understandable given the hostility that she would encounter in recounting an episode like this involving Al Gore. She would face widespread disbelief. But no woman should have to forgo the possibility of criminal accountability if she has been victimized, no matter who the perpetrator is.

I don't get it! This is our planet and our ocean, yet we continually let big business and government control everything!

We only have one planet, let's get those boats out there!!! What could the government or BP do if boats just showed up and started skimming.

    Just a thought........hmmmmmmmm!

    June 30, 2010 at 10:52 pm |
  22. Emily

    @Sharon Hastings
"These Al Gore allegations are just that, allegations."

I agree, and perhaps others have come forward now too? If that is the case, the police may not be saying anything about it if they are investigating...something has happened. They are not gong to waste their time.

    June 30, 2010 at 10:52 pm |

@starr, maybe Gore thought he was smarter than Clinton and would get away with it.

This BP just stomped all over America and our MMS has let it happen. I say bring them all in frount of congress and our highest courts. We and our parents paid thes people to do a job and do it right. Now all of them should have to pay a part of this mess.

    June 30, 2010 at 10:51 pm |

Good point there your question, Police didn't believe her, don't have proof or evidence yet and right now they are reopen their investigation.

Of course BP wants to try and take down the watchdog unit.....they don't want the stockholders and citizens to know all of their dirty little business tactics!!! Money at any cost...we can buy our way out...that is their motto...right?????

I think Bp is really playing a game with the people of the Golf and they dont care about anyone and justwant to plug the dam hole and move out of the golf and live everyone to take care for them selfs.

At the same time that Anderson is saying that the hurricane in the Gulf has winds exceeding 100 MPH there is a simulation of the storm on the
screen with 47MPH peak winds directly over it

@ deb williams- & Mike, formerly from Syracuse- good point about about the National Enquirer re: Edwards, but i still find it very, very difficutl to believe that Al Gore got himself in sex trouble, particularly after what he saw Clinton go through.

Why don't you ask Obama to be on your show or who is in charge of this disaster from the white house? The handling of this is the worst response in U.S. history to any disaster. This tops Jimmy Carter in the hostage situation. Obama should be ashamed he has let this go on without getting all the help that is needed down there. He has really let a lot of people down. A disaster like this is when the government is suppose to take charge in an urgent manner, not sit around and think for over 70 days.

    June 30, 2010 at 10:49 pm |
  34. Ron - Navarre, FL

Maybe we need The National Enquirer to cover the oil spill.
Nobody else is holding anybody accountable except for maybe AC.

    June 30, 2010 at 10:49 pm |
  35. lisal -canada

it is so easy to just sit here and observe the actions of bp's and others and toss out ideas that come to mind. sure is a shame that those who actually have to deal with companies like this can't really speak out.

    June 30, 2010 at 10:49 pm |
  36. Sharon Hastings

These Al Gore allegations are just that, allegations. I can't figure out why again now? Why didn't they pursue it back when they first learned about it. Supposedly there wasn't enough proof. It's going to be her word against his and she is suspect due to her demands for money, etc. He gets the benefit of the doubt as far as I'm concerned.

Hoping and praying that the people of Texas and in the path of Alex.find safe place to ride out this storm.

I would truly hate to see this Al Gore story to hurt his credibility with the all important issue of Climate Change. We have so few men of committment to make a difference in the world and too many times they are pulled down. What is more important... this kind of scandal, true or false, or the worldwide crisis of Climate Change and this man's leadership role?

    June 30, 2010 at 10:48 pm |
  39. Chris

These oil samples requested for testing by Rep. Kathy Castor are evidence. Was there a formal chain of evidence of these samples? What assurances do we have that these samples are actual samples from this spill? With BP's track record of deception, I wouldn't be surprised if they flew in samples from elsewhere.

Each day just continues to bring more depressing and terrifying news. The folks in Texas I wish you safety through this hurricane. To everyone else in the Gulf suffering from this mess I continue to keep you in my thoughts. 72 days. I wish there was an immediate answer for this but there doesn't seem to be anything being done to solve the problem as long as BP is still around and an inept government failing before our eyes. What we need now is fellowship and prayer.
    Goodnight Mr. Cooper and bloggers.

I heard the MMS has already approved something like 100 or more sites/wells for BP in the last few months. No one will kick them out, aside from this, they are/were creating too many jobs in the Gulf for the people.

  43. Merl, Ohio

If they use explosives to attemp to seal the well, logic tells me there is no way they would ever seal it then. Right now they have a very good chance. All they have to do is do it.

Obama's cover-up on his handling of the oil spill and containment is unravelling. The problem is not right wing or left wing, it's the west wing.
