BP Executive: Flow Rate not "Relevant" – Join the Live Chat

[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/01/02/liveblogfinal.copy.jpg]

BP's Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles tells a New Orleans newspaper that knowing how much oil is gushing out of that well is irrelevant. We're keeping them honest. Plus, a major ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court on handgun ownership.

Scroll down to join the live chat during the program. It's your chance to share your thoughts on tonight's headlines. Keep in mind, you have a better chance of having your comment get past our moderators if you follow our rules.

Here are some of them:

1) Keep it short (we don't have time to read a "book")
2) Don't write in ALL CAPS (there's no need to yell)
3) Use your real name (first name only is fine)
4) No links
5) Watch your language (keep it G-rated; PG at worst - and that includes $#&*)

Fining BP or anyone is not the answer. Why? Because the "fines" go to the government and not to the people who need it. Send your representatives in congress the clear message that we want our government to get in this fight and stop the devastation that continues.
Sam in Louisiana is right. Marsha in Houston.

Hi, Just found this. Maybe you can help answer layman's questions about oil spill. Why do they not implode the whole thing? Put a big rock on it?? Run a tube down there and fill the hole with cement or something? It just seems there has got to be a relatively simple solution. Are they still trying to salvage their business?? I hope these don't seem like dumb questions. But before you start something, you should always know how to take it apart, shouldn't you???

I would be kind of afraid to buy a handgun, but I want the right to do so if my family and I ever needed to defend ourselves. I believe most gun owners are law-abiding citizens!

@ oAnn, N. Royalton- thank you kindly for your post- gave me quite a bit of understanding of the situation. Thank you for taking the time to explain all of that.

@David, Indiana- what you say makes sense. However, given the info given on the last story about "loop holes", only God knows how many more "loop holes" are around this issue.

I also send my deepest condolences and regrets on the passing of Sen Byrd. His oratory in the Senate and intelligence will be much missed. Thoughts & prayers to family, friends and especially staff.

BP will probably go back to the Supreme One that canceled the moratorium on drilling (the one they chose) and get him to put a cap on the their liability.

  17. Sam , Louisiana

The stupidity of some people!! So because we don't want to rely on foreign oil alone and be able to use our own resources, we shouldn't complain when , MMS doesn't do their job and regulate the safety of deep water drilling , and shut down a company like BP who has had over 700 safety violations in the past 3 years, we shouldn't be complaining about all the oil ruining our way of life?? And you don't care if the people down here are covered in oil? And not to mention all the jobs that are at a stand still because of this moratorium and can not get out there and make a living for their families. No , we need to drill , and MMS and the government need to do their jobs!!

@David, Indiana, "BP is drilling in the gulf because of a permit they have from the govt. BP has to do what the govt asks within I would guess the guidelines of the permit."

Permits can be revoked, esp. in a case like this.

Everyone blames MMS, but look who is in charge of this whole department... Salazar! He never improved anything at all and gave out all those permits to drill and explore without the environmental reviews. Salazar is as much to blame as anyone else here.

I agree with most of you that the Govt. has not stepped up as it should. About time we divert the questions from BP to the Obama admin...since BP has proven to be incompetent and lacking any level of empathy.
Goodnight Mr. Cooper and to you all.

HOW could this "environmental" loophole have existed for this past decade, at least? I've been hearing nothing but "living green" and the environment for at least a decade!
