[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/01/02/liveblogfinal.copy.jpg]

Tonight on 360°, keeping them honest. The 'Birthers' are back and this time legislators are listening.
Arizona passes a bill demanding presidential candidates produce a birth certificate. Five other states are working on similar measures. Tonight, hear directly from one of the Arizona lawmakers who voted for the bill.
Plus, new developments in the murder of a principal and more.

Scroll down to join the live chat during the program. It's your chance to share your thoughts on tonight's headlines. Keep in mind, you have a better chance of having your comment get past our moderators if you follow our rules.

Here are some of them:

1) Keep it short (we don't have time to read a "book")
2) Don't write in ALL CAPS (there's no need to yell)
3) Use your real name (first name only is fine)
4) No links
5) Watch your language (keep it G-rated; PG at worst - and that includes $#&*)

@ Nancy in Oregon, yes I fully agree. I was at the University of Oregon studying medicine when St. Helens blew it's top, really a eye opener!

  3. Sara Asif - Toronto, Canada

Thank you for keeping them honest Anderson. Mr. Ash didn't have anything to say because all you rebuttals were based on fact which was awesome!

And true I have days when I'm not the brightest crayon in the box (don't tell that to my students though lol)....and agree completely people need to be more informed and perhaps just read up more before they say something!

53% Elected the president and 58% believes he a US citizen. Is it possible to believe that most of the people who voted for Mcain are birthers? That cannot be true.

Unbelievable! This is the Republic Party's attempt to try and control the next Election. If this is the only way for them to regain the Presidency, It's a sad day for the Republicans.

Great job Anderson. Your questions were great and allowed people to see what these "birthers" are really all about.

  8. Wendell

Hey Andeson, thanks for pointing out that just because someone can disagree with you doesn't mean either are stupid.

  9. James Wyatt

By the way it is ignorant not to want this type of problem to happen to anyone else who gets elected president. So, what is the harm in trying to make it where this type thing doesn't happen again?

    April 21, 2010 at 10:32 pm |
  10. Nancy

How would you like to live here in Arizona and know that the likes of Cecil Ash were representing you. Nothing the Arizona Republican do should surprise anyone. They are really ignorant beings but then so are the voters that keep sending them back to the legislature.

Keep your eye on the immigration legislation they just passed. That is a real piece of work.

Shame on the political(R) officers in Arizona, they are the guiding force of the state, please don't waste your time and our tax payer money. Go and find out the facts, investigate if you are going to make any changes. Stop misinforming Americans. Thanks Anderson!! Great Job!!

PS Anderson, I also like the passion you go after the truth with, keep it up.

  14. Cynthia

Thank you Anderson. You thoroughly showed the birther man for what he is. You dismantled all of his arguments politely, calmly, and didn't give up. He doesn't even know how incredibly dumb he sounded. Where are all of the people who think for themselves and don't grab on every fanatical story that someone spouts without saying ' PROVE IT". We need people to step up and refute all of these whacky falsehoods, right at the onset. Don't let them get away with it until people have heard it so much they they think it is a fact.

I agree with Roland. This country has a lot of stupid, simple minded, racist, bible-thumping citizens.

    April 21, 2010 at 10:32 pm |
  16. Kelsey

Roland, thank you for saying out loud what everyone is thinking. They should call this new law the Forest Gump Law...stupid is as stupid does. Talk about government waste!!

What do american citizen from Arizona will show to the police if asked United States does not have ( yet) a document that show citizenship unless you carried with you your bith certificate and NOBODY carries that in their wallets

Good reminder, Anderson. But boy, sometimes people sure SOUND stupid! Or worse, much worse, devious.

    @Megan,

That really is a wild volcano! Mother Nature is truely something....they are great pictures, indeed!

Mr roland is right. that is an insult to the State of Hawaii and its people to distrust what they are saying. Stupid is what stupid does.

Gary and Chad on top of the story as usual. Glad planes can fly. Not only for the poor stranded people but the horrible hit to the economy and airline industry.

Gary Tuchman has done it again. He has informed and educated us on volcanos and country that people know little about.

Thanks Gary.....you're the point man for AC360. Going into all kinds of stories and bringing us incredible information.

Many Canadians are just shaking their heads in disbelief. With so many critical issues effecting the US and the rest of the world, Americans are wasting time on such stupid trivialities.

    "Fly and be free?"

As a Star Trek fan, I'm confused. Does Chad mean, "Live long and prosper"?

    Anderson– we need answers!

  28. Doug Widowski

Sorry, I mispelled Roland as Rolland. When will the Republicans blame Obama for the volcanoes in Iceland? They blame him for everything else.

    April 21, 2010 at 10:30 pm |
  29. Doug Lapp

As long as we are talking about qualifications for holding office, it seems that any elected official who refuses to publicly acknowledge factual information to his/her constituents is clearly "not qualified" to hold office and should be removed from public service.

    April 21, 2010 at 10:30 pm |
  30. Cleo

When I heard about this, I thought it was joke. Don't these politicians have better things to do?

    April 21, 2010 at 10:30 pm |
  31. James

Not that I doubt the legitamcy of Obama's birth certificate but does it matter? He's already been elected. Bush was born in the U.S. and look at the job he did. A little outside help might not be so bad...

  32. Nancy in Oregon

Angela, I live in the Pacific Northwest and remember Mt. St. Helen's...heard it blow, in fact. It's pretty stupendous stuff. I took a college geology course that was fascinating, but when a volcano really went off fairly nearby, it was an eye-opener! I know what you mean!

    April 21, 2010 at 10:30 pm |
  33. Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA

There are so amazing ashes came out out of lava!!!! Amazing picture!!! Excellent! I hope Gary is doing great there, he is doing great job reporting!

evening everyone... thanks for joining the chat... i really try not to take sides, as you know, but there are facts, and they do matter, and holding people accountable for facts is my job.

i dont like anybody labeling people as "stupid"...there are plenty of days when i dont feel like the sharpest tool in the shed.. people may be misinformed, or not informed, but it doesnt mean they are stupid. just my two cents.

    April 21, 2010 at 10:30 pm |
  36. David

Way to go, Anderson Cooper! Thank you! You stood toe to toe with the Arizona official, not stepping down, challenging his logic, pointing out his lunacy and clearly naming his pandering to right-wing crackpot agenda.

Oh, if many of your own colleagues had your courage and clarity–television today would be much different, for the better. Thank you, Anderson! Keep it up!

    April 21, 2010 at 10:30 pm |
  37. Mike O'Brien

Mr. Cooper, kudos to you for your bustin' Ash. I'm a Canadian, 55 yrs old and open to all opinions but this topic is so sick it defies decency. Your country voted for Obama based on his credentials,. You can't cater to stupidity as Roland Martin said and I agree with Plain "STUPID". Watch you every night.

'You've been talking to vulcans?' haha. good one! live long and prosper Anderson 😉

It was the glacial cold water cooling the erupting magma which made much of the ashes that were expelled. Much of the glacial ice is gone now in the original volcano, ash clouds will be less. However it's Sister Volcano has much more glacial ice covering it and would therefore produce more of a ash cloud.

    April 21, 2010 at 10:29 pm |

Anderson -you are so fabulous by keeping them honest ! Good job!! Seeing that eruption so close must have been awesome-nary a little frightening for Gary!!

Good evening Anderson, I just wanted to say if I'm not mistaken if are born to an American parent then you are a U.S citizen. Doesn't matter what country you are born in. Think of this your on a cruise and the women (U.S. Citizen gives birth in the Bahamas is the baby not a U.S citizen?? Father not a U.S citizen

    April 21, 2010 at 10:29 pm |
  42. Mike stevenson

Isn't anyone born to a mother who is a citizen automatically also a citizen?

    April 21, 2010 at 10:29 pm |
  43. Tim

Great job Anderson. I hope we can more of this. Keep to the facts and get rid of the partisan hacks.

    April 21, 2010 at 10:29 pm |
  44. Anne

It is my understaning that if an American has a child outside the US that child is considered an American citizen. So if they believe the president was born in Kenya, he was born to an American mother and that makes him an American. They are ignoring the fact about his mother.

    April 21, 2010 at 10:28 pm |

    @Sara Asif – Toronto, Canada,

Oh yeah, media hungary and trying to get people to vote who know no better! Need to focus on the issues, and there are real issues that can be focused now.

Anderson why are these people in office? I love the fact you asked him where George Bush was born. I think racism is a disease. I am an African American from Alabama. I love the way you "Keep it honest". Thanks!!!! Your the best.

As a center that tends to lean right I am disappointed, Mr. Ash needs to step up, represent and not promote nor propagate nonsense. Mr. Ash you are better than this!! – Ray Antonino Myrtle Beach, SC

Thanks, Anderson, for being so articulate in showing the absurdity of his position.

I believe some of the controversy comes from the fact that what makes you a U.S. citizens(US LAWS) has changed over the years. Some people want to apply laws that are currently in place to all birth situation in the past when laws were different...Some research may be required.
