I don't think intelligence trumps whipped up emotion, Gloria. Bright people still do horrible and cruel things.

Anderson – it seems that the Republicans have the dirtier hands in this, with the verbal assaults staring with Joe Wilson and going right through to the "baby killer" shout.

@Mike, formerly from Syracuse, "The party in power ALWAYS gets more protests against it than the one out of power."

There were plenty of protestors against the Bush administration, I know, I was one of them.

I am proud to have a President and Congressmen that have stood up for the American people and passed this Health Care Reform.
May not be perfect but better than nothing.

Isn't it sad that our lawmakers have stooped so low and have acted so badly. I'm sure that many of them, both sides, should not have the privilege of representing us. Oh, and yeah, when they lose their jobs, they can shop for new healthcare. Hope they don't have any pre-existing conditions!

  18. Mike, formerly from Syracuse

@ A. Smith, the Democrats have had 14 months to 'sell' this bill. The more we find out, the more it will be attacked.

But there is sure evidence of broken windows and phone threats, Gary. Would you agree they should be arrested?

Is it me or is anyone else worn out on health care discussions? Be it dem or rep.....health care is becoming the "I don't care" issue for Americans who have better things to do with their time. Yes, I care what happens as do many other citizens. However sane people don't have time for an abondance of stories on threats, finger pointing and overall outlandish behavior.

    I agree with Mr. Gergen.
The wingnuts love these stories....thrive on the negativity. These stories give them reason to continue.

all of the acts and threats of violence made me think about other countries that riot and cause damage and even kill their political leaders if they disagree with them. Are we on our way?

This is not about health care this is about the splitting of America.
Republicans and Democrats are acting like the Hatfields and Mccoys and they better start joining together and acting like mature adults Our country is broke and people are depressed forget politics let us all act for the good of our country.

i agree with D. Gergen....violence is very possible.

Mr. Avlon also makes very good points as well.

BOth sides need to decry th hate speech and the violent actions!! NOT make political "hay" out of what is happening.

    EXcellent panel discussion!!

@ nikki, I'm certain as the public and business's learn more about the Health Care bill and the appended Educational Grants overhaul, the approval will rise a great deal.

    JoAnn,
I agree with you, Good point..... There are so many threats from callers or voicemail. Just way what people are so angry........

Gloria, not the intent perhaps, but still the responsibility of the speaker to be circumspect.

    March 25, 2010 at 10:19 pm |
  32. Mike, formerly from Syracuse

@Valery, when you use the threats as a fundraising toll like Obama is doing, it being used politically.

  33. David, Indiana

Good evening Anderson, Isabel, Emily, Starr, Megan, everyone.

It will be interesting to see how this legislation goes into implementation. Maybe the most interesting part of this will be seeing and working through the implementation.

So disturbing to hear reports about anyone threatening public officials.
I hope getting into what the legislation actually does will calm the waters.

Good point by David Gergen condemn it and cool it.

OMG- bloodshed. People please. Our country is about democracy. The reform was passed by majority vote. This is out of hand. Great advice from David

  35. Ted

Any act of violence or threats should be unequivocally condemned. Why the call for Republicans (or Democrats for that matter) to apologize? Condemned yes! but apologize?

    March 25, 2010 at 10:19 pm |
  36. Scott Tenorio

Thank-god for health care reform. It is sad that people cannot express themselves better. We are all human, use those words and anger and write Congress. My first question is, did these opponents vote? If not, then they have no reason to complain.

  37. Kim- Ohio

Yes...Driehaus has had his address put out there and there are protestors outside his home...threats to his wife and children. Police have to sit outside his home for protection. This is out of control. This needs to stop before someone really gets hurt.

Right, words and emotions can be taken out of content when it is not the intent.

After the distortions in the media over the health-care debate we are now getting distorted reports over who’s responsible for the violence. Despite the vast preponderance of incidents against the Dems., we are hearing about Dems. whipping up the violence against the GOP.

  42. Sharon Hastings

People need to use their passion for their causes and convictions in a positive way. We can all campaign or somehow participate in the process for our preferred candidates. We can make a contribution of money or time or both. In the end though we all just get our one vote. That one vote is powerful. As a democracy, the person with the most votes wins. Hate and threats don't accomplish anything.

    March 25, 2010 at 10:18 pm |
  43. A. Smith, Oregon

I completely agree with David Gergen, there is a large growing possibility that there is going to be blood shed as a result of these Tea-Baggers and Republican followers being whipped into a frenzy.

  44. Sharon

I was disappointed to see Obama belittle those who disagree with his politics and views. I want professionalism from a leader even in the face of frustration.
I wonder who will lead the American peace accord. Yikes

  45. Cassandra

I agree with Mr. David Gergen......This is going to end badly......How sad.

  46. Valery Lyman

Why do you always try to make it look like both sides are equal? There are far more threats towards Democrats than towards Republicans, and it's a real problem. Dems are not speaking up about this to make political hay; they are speaking up about it because it's dangerous and needs to be addressed. I'm sure they would much rather not be threatened than have threats to use as political fodder.

    March 25, 2010 at 10:17 pm |
  47. nikki

I'm hoping the bill and it's good effects will disprove Republican sentiments.

We don't acceptable their behavior against us or people...... They need stop complaining about our healthcare..... Shame on you, Republicans!!!!!! Grow up, Republicans.

    Good evening everyone!

Really pleased and relieved that healthcare is now done for real. It'll still get kicked around some, but I think the approval numbers will continue to climb.

I'm very worried about how things are going to heat up over the summer. As the temperatures rise, so will tempers. Personally, I think the Republicans have really fanned these flames and they are now (Hello, Cantor!) blaming the victims.

Will America ever be as it used to be? It feels as though we are spinning out of control and this government is more worried about passing legislation than the will of the people.Democrats should take to heart Americans frustration.
