As a resident of San Diego, I see no reason what so ever that this man should not have been able to put the car into neutral. The driver himself also presented an issue with the car being "out of control."

With that said, the problems with Toyota are also a real, and were leadership overlooked even by our own leadership until people began to die.

I'm sorry, but this whole Toyota accelerator thing is crap. American drivers on the whole are too stupid to know how to handle their cars in an emergency. Not entirely the drivers fault, the driving tests in this country are a joke. Now the tests are even being offered in other languages than English? You have got to be kidding me.

Car accelerating out of control? Put it in neutral, shut the car off, turn the key back to "On", coast off the road. It's not that hard, really.

Car won't stop? People, it's called an EMERGENCY BRAKE for a reason! It's a mechanical brake, it can't fail unless the line is cut.

But in typical American fashion, they'd rather blame someone else for their own inability to deal with an emergency.

He was afraid the wheels would lock if he turned the car off?

He couldn't put it in neutral?
