Tens of thousands of residents began evacuating from coastal Japan on Sunday in anticipation of a possible tsunami following the 8.8-magnitude quake that rocked Chile the day before, CNN's Kyung Lah reported.
The northern part of the main island is looking at the possibility of a tsunami more than 9 feet high, she said. Rail service has been halted and residents have been urged to evacuate low-lying areas of the island nation.
The warning primarily affected fishing areas and tourist areas; major cities like Tokyo, which is inland, were not affected.

Thank you Mr. Cooper for having always the best information for all people living in this country. I am a native from Guatemala and your show is one of the few that share news from "all of the Americas" not just the USA and Mexico. Sadly, some other shows seem to think the world starts here and ends where Mexico does. As it is, there was a small shaker in Guatemala last week and nobody talked about it.
Thank you and Dr. Gupta, you are amazingly generous and humane.
You and your staff make our day @ home each night....
May God be with all of them.I don't know what is going on,but i really think planet Earth is starting to fight back!!!

A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 rattled Japan's southern islands early Saturday, injuring two and initially prompting fears of a tsunami.
There were no reports of serious damage from the quake, believed to be the strongest in a century to hit Japan's southern Okinawa Island. Japan's Kyodo news agency said two people were hurt, but there were no reports of any deaths.
The quake occurred off the coast of the island of Okinawa at a depth of 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) at 5:31 a.m. Saturday (2031 GMT Friday), the Meteorological Agency said.
No Panic here in Hawaii! Some people doing dumb things but they always do dumb things! Everyone is being very orderly and even leaving store items for others to buy .. repeat no one is in panic here!
I know a lot of people there in hawaii and I'm hoping that everyone there is going to be safe right after all this.
Hawaii is not panicking. Evacuations are proceeding in an orderly manner and everyone is being courteous during this time of preparation for the possible disaster.
Praying for minimum casualties.
