    @Gloria,
    In the past, it's clear that it was never "used on the people of Haiti."

    ....I think that's why people & even Governments are having more questions now, and as it was just mentioned, there IS "going to be donor-fatigue" if they are not seeing results!

    Why is the money being wasted on new vehicles when they have homeless and starving people in their country? It never makes any sense to me

    Haiti can't be fixed unless the Haitians fix it. After this disaster stabilizes, we should leave them alone to sort out their own problems. The country was prosperous as a French colony and can be again if they get their act together.

    Althought Haiti was the first island to get their independence status from France; the island has never been independent in the "true sense" of the word – bound and abused by corrupt leaders and misfortune. The people however have always show an independent spirit of survival amidst all the misfortune that they have faced as a nation. We admire that courage!

    Maybe Bill Clinton can get a handle on where the money is and where it is going. Perhaps a central fund could be developed for the money that is sent to the Gov. and then carefully monitored as to where it goes!

    The Good NGO's i hope have used t heir money appropriately. Although one would expect with the kind of money donated, Why is there not more food and medial pre-earthquake??

    Anderson & Dr Gutpta, thank you for going back to Haiti. You are doing a great job.

    @Lori
    To understand the whole story you have to go back to the beginning where Haiti have to pay france back 21 billion dollars in slavery reparation for fighting their freedom.

    I am really concerned about where my donations go and how they are used. I work really hard for my money.

    Fabulous reporting on "Duvalier" it's about time these thieves were exposed! Unfortunately it is really a case of too little too late – what took the French so long to try and "freeze" their assets? The stealing from the people of Haiti continued after the Duvaliers and what is equally frightening: who is looking after all the millions of dollars in aid going into the island as "earthquake relief"? There must be accountability that money will be allotted to creating an infrastructure, i.e. roads, utilities, schools, hospitals, etc., so that eventually billions of dollars in improvements can serve to benefit the Haitian people.
    Thank you Anderson!

    Should the authority of the Haitian government be put into some kind of multinational trusteeship for a time? What criteria do we use to measure and declare Haiti as a failed state? And which international body would determine that? In terms of measuring how well it cares for its population, the aggregate public health data alone is staggering–and damming.

    how do we know that the current money raised won't be stolen? Is the government in control of the money?

    The countries that are fighting to save Haitian lives may be more committed to the organization of the country's economy when the initial phase of relief over.

    Anderson, Track where the money goes? Don't expect any cooperation from the Haitian government.

    February 10, 2010 at 10:42 pm |
  17. Emily

    @Jo Ann,
    That is it, has it been handed over?
    And if so, to whom?

    February 10, 2010 at 10:42 pm |
  18. Danie T.

    Please make sure all that money raised don't go through the government. There are plenty of organizations in Haiti that can manage the money, non-profit, religious, etc...

    You question is now being answered.... Where did the money go?

    America has propped up corrupt leaders all over the world for many decades, even up to present times in Afghanistan, Iraq et. al. Look at the impact on the people those corrupt leaders has!

    haiti will go back to 'business-as-usual' if it goes back to 'politics-as-usual'. as with most countries, it is so sad to see politics standing in the way of commonsense and goodwill. haiti needs new politics and new business. this is a huge opportunity.

    Good evening all. Great subject about where the money of Haiti went.

    @Emily, "however, what is the answer as to "who" is in charge of Millions & Millions that are going to Haiti after this awful Earthquake, and Who will be overlooking it?"

    I think that should have been decided before handing the money over.

    @Isabel that's incredibly hot, 109F and 120F not yet confirmed.

    We're more in Tom Foreman's situation here. Though we don't have 72 inches of snow. Being without power for any amount of time in the winter is no picnic. I hope they get the power back on immediately. Probably crews from all over the country there.

    It is infuriating to think of a govt just wasting all that money. A system of checks and balances and yes a free press does so much to prevent just that.

    Stop wondering Emily............History has a way of repeating its self, ie !!! rich would be richer ..poor would be poorer...........They can`t even distribute food to the hungry..........wonder what they will do with the money hmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!

    God I love this hypocrazy.....financing guys(read: dictators) at the cold war(and haiti isn't the only country) hence building up their power and strengthening their regimes .... and now hunting them down after the cold war's over...

    Excellent report on the money taken from Haiti and the Haitian people. I hope that gentlemen means what he says, that the 7 million that has been found will go back to the Haitian people.

    And it is true, USA did not intervene with the horribly corrupt governments in Haiti.

    @Anderson, thanks so much for looking into this for us.

    I wonder if it's even possible to take back most if not some of the money at the Swiss account to help Haiti? I always thought that there is no way of getting any money once it made its way to Switzerland.

    Haiti has been ruled by dictators since it won independence in a slave revolt in 1804. The Duvaliers are just the latest in a long line of corruption.

    now this is really interesting - one thing that is mentioned often is "the history of corruption and dictatorship" but not much detail.

    without even knowing much, one has to assume that the money and politics which overshadowed the past is still there in some form, and will need to be dealt with as part of the reconstruction.
