I usually agree with Gergen's comments. And I would have this time if he had equally condemned Steele's personal attack on Reid. On the other hand, I have watched hours of the Senate debate on C-Span and I will tell you that all I see is Republicans being complete hypocrits. Two examples - McCain proposed an amendment to restore the Medicare cuts; when he ran for President, he proposed triple the cuts the Democrats are proposing. Or, lets take the Gregg amendment to take the cuts but not use them for health care reform. In 1991 and 1993, these same Republicans took every penny of social security and medicare tax surpluses to fund their income tax cuts while at the same time arguing that social security was in big trouble.

Reid's comment wasn't over the line at all. In a historical context it was a perfectly just comparate. Just because one's modern sensibilities is horrified by the word "slavery" by making woman have to accept the full burden of an unwanted pregnancy for whatever reason is in effect slavery.

In our area there are 3 – 4 times more couples willing to adopt Vs birthmothers willing to consider the adoption option. Why doesn't the government consider funding the adoption option Vs abortion procedures? Why is so much more public money spent on promoting abortion Vs promoting the adoption option?
