Live Blog from the Anchor Desk 12/7/09

U.S. Senator Mary Cantwell is urging Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to help American college student Amanda Knox, who was convicted of murdering her study abroad roommate in Italy and sentenced to 26 years in prison. Senator Cantwell, who represents Knox’s home state, has issued a statement saying she has profound concerns that Knox has been failed by the Italian justice system.

Also tonight: science, skepticism and allegations of conspiracy. World leaders have gathered in Copenhagen for the United Nations climate summit but leaked emails from an internationally-renowned climate research unit are threatening to overshadow the talks.

Sometimes abortion is not a choice. Of you view abortion though just the eye that you are expressing then a cast for a broken finger is a choice, crutches for a twisted ankle is a choice, stitches for a cut on your hand is a choice, etc... they will all heal.

I am Italian, live in the US and love America.
I am sorry to read that many Americans don't trust the Italian legal system and am disappointed that that many experts call this an antiamerican thing:( I have followed this case very closely and it seems that in the US, either as a result of a poor translation work or perhaps on purpose, we have not received all details of the case. Surf the internet and you will find lot of information that might change your opinion, don't defend someone just because of his/her nationality.

Any kind of lie will eat away at your credibility. Better to let it out in the open and hash out any confusion and discrepancy.

20 days to report??? That's ludicrous. Science and discovery has to work at its own pace or you end up with garbage.

    Hello!!!!! I am back again!
    Isabel,
There will be long time to appeal for Amanda Knox, I agree with her parents, there are no motive evidence for her. I think the jury mistake that she didn't commit her crime.

@jerry, The Napoleonic code is based on the Inquisition! Most have the Inquisitorial system, but for the countries from the Common Law. (The UK System, which incl. US, Canada, Hong Kong, Australia, etc.).

Amanda's family were speaking alot about the 41 hours I think they said she was questioned!
It's based on the Inquisition! ~Perhaps so many would not be so shocked if they knew this...I think that Lisa Bloom tried to explain it some!

What people are not discussing is that scientists believe that every ecosystem has a carrying capacity. Scientists believe that global warming may limit our ability to carry on as we have done historically.

The ice is about 6 weeks late going in on the lakes up here in northern Canada which is messing up people being able to ski, dog sled, ice fish etc ... There is hardly any snow and it's been getting worse over the last few years

    BUT

is that global warming or is this a natural fluctuation of the climate that is exacerbated by us and the stupid emissions we put in the atmosphere?

    Good evening! 🙂 Happy Monday!

*Hope justice is served in the Amanda Knox case.
*I am for medical abortions that can save a mother's life. But that where the buck starts and stops. Again, safe sex is the best prevention if someone is not "ready' to get pregnant. Since we are into preventative care with accountability and responsibility, we might as well start caring where we leave/plant our egg and sperm cells away. And for the record, a minute of putting a condom is so easy compared to the resources to be used for abortion. "Higher form of animal???"
*Nothing wrong with sci-fi geeks. Think their hot. Well, hotter if it looks like Anderson Cooper.
*Nothing wrong with Sen. Baucus except perhaps he should have told it. Conflict of interest anyone? If his GF is professionally great, there is no way their relationship can derail it, open or not.
*Highly curious about the climate change. What's making my nose itch is the "Hacking" and the timing. Got to love "conspiracy" theories or NOT.

    Have a great night! 🙂

it is distressing to see fake science, or badly interpreted results, or interpretations skewed to underscore a desired result or keep research money coming in. very distressing.

surely there is enough independent scientific study underway to make some intelligent conclusions.

Hi, You have the ideal opportunity to educate the public: last I checked, only 2 percent of the health services provided by PP to its clients were abortions. PP provides basic health care to women and men. People don't know this, they think all PP does is abortions. Not true. They are a main provider of low cost health care services. Please educate your listeners. Thanks

Regardless of the "hacked email", many, many other scienrits have Independently found, believe and have proved global warming.

Besides, what harm is there in mankind raising it's standard of energy use that we know has caused a huge increase in asthma alone?
And, we would not be dependent on any other country for oil anymore!

Global warming is not a hoax. It was considered common scientific knowledge when I was trained as an environmental scientist over 25 years ago.

Isn't it obvious that the world is breaking and we are in great peril, it's in front of our eyes that the ice is melting and instead of wasting time arguing over the cause of global warming why not concentrate on changing attitudes and have more care for the environment.

One third of the women seeking an abortion at that New York Planned Parenthood clinic have in insurance or one third of women seeking all services have insurance?

Good report. Maybe getting Health Care Reform through congress now extending the current policy on govt ins would get insurance to people who could use family planning services.

Sen. Harry Reid did go to far. Frustration, a bit of an explosion, but maybe just blowing off steam. I feel congress can work through this.

    Good evening Anderson Cooper.

Do you think that this Global warming was marketing technique for companies to make more business?

If this is a hoax, should we stop our efforts to help the environment?

What was subject only to environmentalists and scientists now is everyone's business. United States, China, Brazil and India have announced targets for reducing emissions of greenhouse gases. I hope the leaders can find the best solution.

If abortion is a 'choice' then it's not a required medical procedure, it's elective surgery. My taxes should be used to pay for it no more than a nose job. Want an abortion, pay for it yourself; or better yet use a $2 condom so you don't need one. Abortion is more damage control than birth conytol.

    Evening Anderson and all!

I think Senator Reid was just making the point of fear of the masses getting in the way of what should be done by using those two prominent examples. In terms of importance, you cannot compare health care to slavery but I find it hard to believe that was his intention.

I feel the same also that the insurance companies will use this issue to cut costs.

By the way, I to am a supporter of choice especially because it's not up to me to pass judgment or tell someone how to live their life.

We are so close to health care reform. I hope they can come to a fair compromise and get this passed. I know abortion is a controversial topic but the fact remains that abortion is legal in our country and women do have the choice. I hate to see many women who need services be blocked again from receiving them.

    @David, Indiana,
I think that Amanda Knox and her family have a good chance of having success during the appeal if she is innocent!
I don't think that it helps with all the put downs!
She seems to have, on a whole, gotten the same kind of trial that Italians get! She is Not in America! Her family was talking like she should have been treated the same way. ie, her interrogation!

I support choice (although i could not personally decide to have an abortion for myself). Resultantly, i am deeply concerned about this being an issue in the healthcare reform bill.

I feel that women are being singled out and may not be able to get an abortion without paying huge costs. This is an issue that Ins Co.'s could take advantage of.
