Evening Buzz: White House Party Crashers

Maureen Miller
AC360° Writer

Security is supposed to be top-notch at The White House.  But somehow a couple that wasn't invited to last night's state dinner got inside the party tent, and within feet of the President. The intruders even brag about it on their Facebook page.

The couple took a lot of photos. There's a snapshot with Vice President Joe Biden, another with White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and many others.  We'll show you the party photos tonight on 360°. We'll also have details on the intruders who are reportedly aspiring reality TV stars.

Tonight the Secret Service released this statement:

"The Secret Service has tasked our Office of Professional Responsibility with conducting a comprehensive review of the incident which occurred at the White House State Dinner last night.

Initial findings identified a Secret Service checkpoint which did not follow proper procedures to ensure that the 2 individuals named in a Washington Post story were on the invited guest list.

It is important to note that these individuals went through magnetometers and other levels of security, as did all guests attending the dinner."

Join us for this story and much more starting at 10 p.m. ET. See you then!

Cruise Ships have a more comprehensive system for getting on the ship...sad.

The only positive outcome of this bizarre event will be a careful reassessment of security for the President and his family.

As dangerous as it sounds, what if the couple only attended for the love of the president and the current administration? Gee "Ron" and the vice president are just humble guys holding high positions in the government 🙂

This is really serious. I find it a bit unbelievable that this couple could get away with passing the check point at the White House. There should be a security upgrade. Instead of the old fashion clipboard, have a computer to scan the faces of every guest to see who's invited and who isn't. Better start now.

Those in charge should be fired! This was the problem with 9/11, no firing of anyone responsible, again with Katrina, the buck stops nowhere in Washington.

This is no laughing matter. These intruders must be prosecuted and put in jail. They were so closes to these official that if they wanted to poison any of them, they could easily do it

Oops, there appears to be a new job opening for White House Public Secretary!

I remember making the horrific error of having one of my cameras still in its case during a McCain speech, I was jumped by this hired thugs who prevented me from hearing any more of his speech and prevented from opening the case to show them it was a camera. They thought it was funny.

Its difficult to relate to this 'story' as the secret service can and often operate in a rather heavy handed manner.

The party crashers were incredibly disrespectful. Security breach is one issue, I agree, but is nothing sacred? If this is tied to a reality show, all involved should be charged. It degraded this important event and served to humiliate President & Mrs. Obama and our nation.

They are a lovely couple. They look like they belonged there. Are we sure the lady with the clipboard did not know them?
I loved her gown. The First Lady's gown was my favorite, the crashers
    gown was my next favorite.

Well how ironic and befitting that party crashers got by everyone without notice at the White House party! Mr. Obama has never taken security very seriously. Someone should ask him what his view point on that subject is now.

its very horrible thing to hear, specially from a place where we tought there is high security!

the gate crashers should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
as for the security at the check point, what a joke bluffed there way thru.
get rid of those who let them get by.

How lucky are they that this was just (what looks like) a rich couple with nothing better to do than get their names in the paper. It could have been any person with an agenda, that could have caused some major damage to the structure of the government, by wiping out half the White House staff with a drop of a hat.

this is the Being There syndrome; act lke you belong somewhere or act like you are "somebody" and people assume you are somebody and belong there; all the checkpoints in the world dont' mean squat if the people manning the checkpoint aren't paying attention. This is pretty scary; you can just imagine all of the scenarios that could occur as a result of this.- they could have planted a bomb there somewhere.

This security mayhem with the US doesn't suprise me.
Last July I asked to use the phone at Can/US border after explaining my passport had been stolen. The US border guards welcomed me into their office then locked me up 3 times over the next 1 1/2 hours after saying they couldn't let me back into Canada because I had entered the US without a passport. So much for being honest. It took that several phone calls to their superiors before someone made the decision to let me back into Canada. It made me realize that people with that kind of power but without discretion can be very dangerous.

There was no security probably or maybe their mind was on attending the dinner, looking for the best dressed couples.
Like Tim Gibson said, nothing has changed. The worst can come were we least expected. Wake up Secret Service.

Regarding this couple. I think they should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, so as to deter copycats.

    This is just shocking!

No harm done – so not a big deal. This couple was obviously harmless – just having some off the wall kind of fun. This could serve as a warning of sorts (as Carrie Ann eluded to). In the future – They'll
    be ready.

So, two smart-ass individuals pulled off an amazing stunt. Corrections will be made, you can be sure, and this sort of thing will become the benchmark for security checks for all future Presidential parties. Now, please, let's get these jerks off the TV screen. They've had their day. And if what they did was a felony, sock it to 'em!

  24. Jan

These people are not funny. They committed a felonious act and should be jailed in a federal prison for as long as possible. What is wrong with people that they think lying to the secret service is a way to get ratings for their reality show? Sick and dangerous.

    November 25, 2009 at 10:27 pm |
  25. david

FIRST BALLOON BOY- NOW THESE TWO CLOWNS-LETS START PUTTING SOME OF THESE PEOPLE IN JAIL WHERE THEY BELONG. THESE TWO JERKS NEED TO SPEND THANKSGIVING, CHRISTMAS, AND NEW YEARS IN A FEDERAL INSTITUTION. ITS THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THIS NONSENSE..................

This is not funny, these people should be arrested.

I think this is ausome! The white house is an American facility and this couple has displaied their right to enter. Whether or not they were invited realy does not matter. We all have a right to that facility as long as it is in a respectfull manner. It looked like they should be there and they were not disrespectfull. No Harm Done.

These 2 individuals should be prosecuted to the full extent of Federal LAW. How they were able to Breach security, SECRET SERVICE Guide lines were not followed, to by pass the inner and outter perimeters and get that close to the Vice President , a real tragedy was averted last night. The next time we tax payers may not be that fortunate!!!!!!!!!!

Security at the white house is suppose to be the best. It's where the president lives and he should be the most protected person in America. These people where brave to brag and post pictures. The white house now has a big responsibility to deal with this issue and come out as the stronger person, the white house can't show weakness

  30. Victor T Weah JR

Great point Tim, I personally think every security and the white house needs to be fired, because they are not doing what we are paying them to do.

I am horrified by the events that took place. This was more than a breach of security! I observe this situation as a potential death threat to the President and his guests! I travel alot, and I go through so much security at the airports. I do not understand how these "party crashers" were even allowed the opportunity to intrude and have the perfect opportunity to cause so much havoc to White House security and to show a vulnerable security system! Action should be taken immediately, and this matter should be investigated thoroughly!

    November 25, 2009 at 10:20 pm |
  32. Donna Brown

Think the party crashers were hilarious!!!! Shows how insecure
we really are under this administration!!!

  33. Amma

I am appalled! Suppose these were terrorists?

I think "heads should roll" both in the Secret Service and the White House staff!

    November 25, 2009 at 10:19 pm |
  34. David

Those people should be punished for entering the White House Party.Whatever went wrong at the check points, they obviously went in freely knowing they wasn't invited in the first place, and with that being a felony should be punish to the fullest.

    November 25, 2009 at 10:18 pm |
  35. Bradly D'Souza

Could it be that they were recognized by the person with the clipboard, or someone at the first checkpoint, and therefore let in because they were known by someone?

  36. Ken L

Being an old geezer myself, I need to find me a 26 year blond babe to get my 15 min of fame at the White House.

I should get in free, some of my taxes paid for that party....lol

wOw I am shocked, amused and surprised at this slip in the security wall at the most guarded place on this planet!!!

This must never I repeat never be allowed to happen again. Our President hosting a head of state and a security breach like this. Whatever process is in place is inadequate and must be abolished and new checks and balances put in place. Even tonight I am concerned about my President & other high government officials.

I cannot fathom a situation where this incident could be explained. Post 9-11 you cannot board an airplane without documentation – no excuses...how can people that have not been cleared by security, let alone not invited to a dinner party with the Prime Minister of India and the President of the United States, crash a dinner party at the White House and not be in jail right now? This is absolutely unacceptable...

    November 25, 2009 at 10:17 pm |
  40. David Hoff

Another example of people dropping the ball in the government. What should be a no brainer to insure only approved people get into these events and yet we cant even do that correctly.

Clearly these people were there only for the thrill but they could have easily had a different agenda.

    November 25, 2009 at 10:17 pm |

If anyone can crash the white house state dinner party, I guess that our president has as much security for our country as he has at the white house.

Wow, someone in the secret device should be in the unemployment line soon.. like, yesterday.

Something should be done to the party crashers who committed a felony and they should be charged. Security should be reprimanded

    November 25, 2009 at 10:16 pm |
  44. Charles Harris

My bet is they were a Caucasian couple and appeared to belong there, if they were Middle Eastern or African American they would have been thoroughly checked out. Not too long ago a professor was arrested for going in his house (while black), we still have some work to do. Maybe Obama and Biden will have a beer with the Secret Service

    November 25, 2009 at 10:15 pm |
  45. Mike D.

If it was a black couple there is absolutely no way they would have gotten of that easy. They would have been arrested, and in custody right now sweating it out. That is a fact. Lying to a federal official which is a felony, and trespassing to come within touching distance of the president and his staff is not a gag period.

Major disaster in this story. All sorts of directions this story could have taken. But yet, we believe our airline safety has improved because we take our shoes off. Please, nothing has changed at all.

They made it through but we have faith in all the other levels of security. As I have said before, trust no one but yourself.

Does that mean, then, that the President will pay more attention to Homeland Security rather than sending our protectors over to Afghanistan-now he knows what it's like to have his home invaded. We need every last body we can find to shore up protection here at home...the party crashers was for fun....next time if may be serious. If he's doing more to shore up protection for his home and family, he should do the same for every American.
