Tonight, raw politics. A look at how Americans voted and what it means for the right, the left and independents. Plus, we're keeping them honest in California. A scathing report describes how authorities dropped the ball – big-time – and failed to keep track of accused rapist and kidnapper Philip Garrido while he was on parole. The missed opportunities and mistakes that may have cost Jaycee Dugard years of freedom.

What a comedy of errors. If the consequences weren't so severe for JayCee it would be pathetically laughable.

    @ Mike

Your statement they should settle for what they can get. It is very judgmental in my opinion.

Or just father and kids, or often just mother and kids.

I am Christian also and believe that everyone should be treated equally as well. Why do so many that beleive that God made man in His image do not accept that His image included people that are Gay?

Randi Kay's report is very disturbing. Was the police department understaffed? What is the reason for the disregard for monitoring?

The Dugard Case is so sad,....
Anderson is so right here....the "failures" are unbelievable!

Where does the Constitution address same sex marriage?

    November 4, 2009 at 10:45 pm |
  13. chrissy

How can anyone say that people "choose" to be gay? If you are hetero–did you "choose" to be? Can you honestly say you can control whom you are attracted to? Probably not. There is much debate about whether being gay is an innate characteristic or not. However, if people are gay and married, does it effect your life? does it effect you directly in some way? No. If we have an "inalienable" right to bear arms and defend ourselves, why can't people have the right to love and spend their lives with whom they choose without retribution?

    @Dodie

I guess I am a special kind of christian because I was taught to love others as I love myself........like the bible says to

If a civil union has the same rights as marriage, then what wrong with calling a civil union a marriage?

    November 4, 2009 at 10:44 pm |
  16. Dodie ~ California

    @ Mike

That is like saying blacks, or Jewish, or native Americans should settle for what they can get. It is very judgmental in my opinion.

Good for you. Being Christian is about treating others as you would wish to be treated.....expecially civil rights. God bless you.

    November 4, 2009 at 10:44 pm |
  18. gail

    @ Mike
The same reason that I as a Black woman didn't "go for what I could get "when it came to me being treated equally. Wow!

  19. Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA

@Mike...because giving people anything other than rights that EQUAL the rights of others is simple discrimination. Don't ask me to sit in the back of the bus just because is my seat will get to the same destination.

    @Heather
Are you saying you agree with same sex marriage?

    November 4, 2009 at 10:42 pm |
  21. Dodie ~ California

    @ Starr

You are right on target and I completely agree. It just seems so judgmental regarding its ok to marry opposite sex but not same sex. I also see it as a civil rights issue

    November 4, 2009 at 10:42 pm |
  22. Jennifer - AZ

x gay marriage = x white/colored marriage. This is exactly the same issue – bigotry. There were all the like excuses to try to convince people that African Americans were lesser citizens.

    November 4, 2009 at 10:42 pm |
  23. Peter, Baltimore

It is sad that we as a nation can not accept the fact that families don't just exist as mother, father, kids but also as mother, mother, kids or father, father, kids. I think it is discrimination against the children of same sex couples foremost.

    November 4, 2009 at 10:42 pm |
  24. Jatovi

I do not get why two people who love each other cannot get married.

    November 4, 2009 at 10:42 pm |

You want to preserve the "sanctity " of marriage, outlaw divorce.

Voters in VA and NJ when asked if they were concerned about economics.... answered 90% and85% yes. I want to know why the other % left are not concerned. I think , considering the enormity of the problems Obama inherited from Liz's father et al he has done ok in 10 months. Better I think than the alternative.

    November 4, 2009 at 10:41 pm |

Sad for Maine and same-sex couple marriage.

    November 4, 2009 at 10:41 pm |
  28. gail

It is the same thing Mr. Perkins. Perkins is no different than the man that would not marry the couple in Louisiana. Discrimination is discrimination, period.

    November 4, 2009 at 10:41 pm |
  29. Alex

Obama has been in office for 10 months. It takes a lot more than that to fix 8 years of disastrous policies.

    Heather

Very refreshing to see you think that way. I have a lot of respect for you!

You are not a Christian if you deny the truth of the Bible!

    November 4, 2009 at 10:40 pm |
  32. gretchen

Anderson, why must people have the right to vote for or against Gay marriage? It should be a right as a free tax paying citizen to marry another cosenting adult if you so choose. I'm not Gay but if I were I would use money and political clout to get my rights as an american. The right in the pursuit of happiness is to marry who you want to marry. There is a separation of church and state, peoples religous beleifs shouild not be used in govermental decisions.
    Wake up America.

    November 4, 2009 at 10:39 pm |
  33. Nancy

So Mr. Perkins, what about kids in those 50% of marriages that end in divorce?

    November 4, 2009 at 10:39 pm |
  34. Mike, formerly from Syracuse

Most Americans support civil unions with the same legal rights as marriage but not gay marriage. Why don't gays go for what they can get?

    @ Casey Jones,

"Pardon me, but I'm a person, NOT a special interest."

That's funny (& True,), however, this is politics....and these are politicians.

  36. David, Indiana

Liz Cheney is interesting. I like to here what people on both sides have to say.

I think David Plouffe is right about the cyclical nature of some of the elections. Also I feel sometimes endorsements help but do not sway the electorate.

    November 4, 2009 at 10:39 pm |
  37. Lori

I still think that marriage is not an issue for the state to decide.

    November 4, 2009 at 10:39 pm |
  38. Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA

@Mike...it's denying freedoms and rights in a discriminatory manner. It all comes around to the Constitution.

I am very disappointed in Maine

    November 4, 2009 at 10:38 pm |
  40. Anthonia-Bay Area!

Marriage should be about love not gender. The goverment should allow people to marry eachother no matter the gender they are..

    November 4, 2009 at 10:38 pm |
  41. gail

Doesn't Maine have @ Republicans Senators. The rights of gay American are not a "special interest" group. That is so offensive , These are not special rights they are the same as what everyone has.

    November 4, 2009 at 10:38 pm |
  42. starr, formerly known as vincent

Maine- the biggest disappointment last night.

I continue to say that gay marriage is a "civil rights issue." Until the American people truly realize the "truth" about how gays & lesbians are treated, i am afraid we will continue to see some lasw defeated.

The stories are heartbreaking. And, almost every one i know, knows or is related to a gay person.

"status to marriage"?? tradition??marriage is a Civil Right!

    November 4, 2009 at 10:38 pm |
  43. Dodie ~ California

The USA has prided itself in freedoms.... like the freedom of speech. What ever happened to the freedom of marriage to whomever you want? whether it be same or opposite sex.

We are moving this country to the place where the populace will work 40 hours/week just to pay the bills they rack up staying healthy. Insurance companies, doctors, hospitals and yes, even nurses are draining our economy. It may not a as serious a drain as welfare and medicare but it is growing as we speak.

Oh, and here is this guy trying to tell me what marriage is. This is the biggest reason why they can't get their way. There is no debate, just teaching the "unenlightened" who disagree with them.

    November 4, 2009 at 10:38 pm |

Can they just make out a will?

Tony is right -it is significant to have a vote after the legislature made a ruling. It's also obscenely inappropriate. If you want to defend the Constitution, then defend it for all, not just however it is convenient for you.
