    Awful!!!

Telling their 3 boys to lie to authorities!!
    A very fine example!

I don't think that they should go to jail, however, I don't think that the 3 boys should stay with them either!!!

Why not relegate this balloon story to TMZ and let your program deal with serious news.

James Arthur Ray is someone who seems to garner great trust. So people followed him to their detriment unfortunately

    Anderson,

The balloon boy's mother's name, Mayumi, is pronounced ma-you-me.

It is not pronounced (april) may-u-me.

It's a Japanese name, but still easy to pronounce. Indeed, someone on CNN surely knows the pronunciation.

@Isabel Happy Friday, missed you the last couple nights.

@Carrie Ann me too, I wanted to believe it wasn't a hoax too. Mrs Heene does sound genuinely upset on the phone.

It's a great question by Randi Kaye, why couldn't Arson investigation specialists be found until four days before Willingham's execution and now 9 of them have come forward? The gov's office shld've responded to the appeals lawyers notice that there was an arson finding that contradicted the court finding.

I was way wrong thinking that the balloon boy's parents might be innocent. I'm sorry.

If one pilot naps, the other stays awake and handles the flying and communications. Legal or not, it is commplace in cockpits of all airlines and the military. I think it is a safe and effective practice to combat fatigue and ensure alertness in preparation for landing when on a long duration flight. It seems logical that this may have occured on this flight with one huge, glaring error, the other pilot fell asleep after allowing the first pilot to take a nap.

Surprise, surprise!! so balloon boy was a hoax!...they had to know this hoax would be discovered as a hoax!! this twisted man wanted any attention he could get, even bad attention that hurt his family & he probaly thinks even jail time would make him that much more marketable

OK so the pilots are MIA - but there are 144 passengers and flight attendants. I bet more than one passenger (and hopefully the flight attendants) were wondering what was happening. Can't wait to hear how this turns out.

    Reality supercedes show:

Kind of surprised to learn Mama Heenie sang like a canary regarding the balloon drama so quickly. I expected her to stick faithfully by her husband and the story. Maybe the gravity of jail and her children’s future without her weighed on her decision. If so, I’m rooting for her.

Look for mom to sell her story to Lifetime, write a book, appear on Oprah and redirect her life as an advocate against abusive relationships.

Yes, this story needs a happy ending.

What will happen to the parents? They will be processed by the State, right? What is the penalty for this type of situation?

The brouhaha balloon story just keeps getting better, Mayumi's acceptance of the prevaricated hoax doesn't surprise me a tad.

    Have a great weekend everyone.

It's the defense lawyer's job to do his best to search for evidence that the client is not guilty. No matter what things seem, it is too often that we are wrong. If he was not able to put his personal opinion aside, he should not have been on this case.

    October 23, 2009 at 10:20 pm |

Go Randi. That is the. Stranges defense attorney. He judge his one client and found him guilty. Then defended accordingly

    @Randi-Kaye

What an excellent job you have done with this story.

You're interview with the Defense atty was also penetrating.

We, as a country, really need to re-think the death penalty in some cases.

PS: Randi-Kaye beautiful blouse on the live shot!

This goes back to a previous broadcast. I thought I heard that there were 9 appeals, but the trial lawyer (David Martin), handled the first 8 of these appeals.

    @samora,
I agree with you re. hoaxes becoming "fads" today...shows like "Punked" etc. however, to use your children in such a way is really selfish and poor parenting!

There has always been hoaxes, thanks to April 1st (Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds' being the #1 to my mind), however to plot something like this with 3 little children?!!!

    Anderson,
What is the deal with a flight recorder box that can only record up to a half an hour of audio before the flight is grounded? You can purchase recorders on eBay for $12 that record for 2 hours. When we have witnessed hijackings lasting 2 or more hours, how can we justify this loss of important evidence? Tommy J. WA

Regarding that NW flight, there is something wrong with that news. If the plane was at aprox 500mph and lost contact for an 1 hour, it woudnt be only 150 miles away, but aprox 500 miles away. Since jet planes usually flies around 500mph it looks like they werent out for an 1 hour but 10-20 minutes, which in my opinion is not that long.
Can someone get the facts right?

Good evening!! 🙂 Sleeping or debating (for the sake of argument) equates to negligence for the pilots in both counts. Advancements in technology has one side effect - complacency for mankind.

oh i really wanted to believe that at least the launching of the jiffy-pop saucer-ship was accidental by one of the children and things got out of hand.

not only is the apparent desire to be in the reality-tv world driving a lot of people to do things to excess - but most of the main characters in tv and movies are admired for their ability to break to rules to achieve their objective.

this is glorified in every manner in which we, as a society, absorb information – and we wonder why people think this is what is real and choose to act it out. like a Pavlov demonstration – it's usually rewarded.
