Stephan Mace of the Army's 61st Cavalry Regiment knew the Taliban would be waiting for him when he returned to eastern Afghanistan in September.
During a two-week leave in early September, the 21-year-old specialist sat on his father's couch in Winchester, Virginia, and discussed his concerns over Forward Operating Base Keating in Kamdesh District, a region known as a Taliban stronghold.
"He talked about the village next to the base, that it had 300 Taliban, and they couldn't do anything about it because they were in mosques hiding or with other civilians," says his father, Larry Mace.

The loved ones of these soldiers are in my thoughts and prayers. Been there. Done that. I'm so saddened they have to endure the losses of these conflicts, too. I used to be rah-rah, pro-war, let's beat the evil meanies, whatever. Losing my friend changed that. This thing became real. It wasn't just a number or a casket on the screen. The men and women who come home flag-draped are real. They are somebody's someone. I wish these geniuses deciding their fates would realize how real they were and are to us. The politics of a nation aren't worth their lives no matter how patriotically it's rationalized.
May Stephan Mace rest in peace. Only 21, a life lost because of this senseless war.
"Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.... Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." - Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
We can not get rid of terrorists with war, we must win the hearts and minds of the Muslim people. War only helps the terrorists spread hate, helps them recruit and keeps civilians terrified.
PLEASE PRESIDENT OBAMA END THIS SENSELESS WAR.
