Evening Buzz: John Edwards' Love Child?

[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/POLITICS/08/06/edwards.mistress/art.reille.hunter.jpg caption= "Rielle Hunter is seen arriving at a federal courthouse in Raleigh, North Carolina, last month."]

John Edwards may have been caught in another lie. The former presidential candidate has already admitted to an extramarital affair. Now the New York Times reports he may soon admit he fathered a child with his former mistress, which he denied last year. The child is now 19 months old. And, his mistress is reportedly moving to North Carolina, near Edwards' beach house. That's not all. There's also the report that Edwards told his mistress he would marry her after his wife died of cancer. Joe Johns is in North Carolina working this story for us. And, we'll talk with a friend of Edwards' former lover. There's also the legal fight. A federal grand jury is looking at whether Edwards used campaign cash to pay off his mistress. That would be illegal.

Also tonight, a warning from the top commander of the war in Afghanistan. Gen. Stanley McChrystal says the mission will fail unless the strategy changes and more troops are brought in. We'll talk it over with Peter Bergen, Michael Ware and Author Rory Stewart.

We'll also take you to California where investigators are searching for bones on the property of kidnapping suspect Phillip Garrido. He's pleaded not guilty to charges he held Jaycee Dugard captive for 18 years. Police are now looking at whether he's connected to the disappearance of two other girls in the late 1980s. As for what life was like inside Garrido's home we're uncovered new, bizarre details on the suspect. Dan Simon gives you an up close look at the black box Garrido kept in his home. It's part of our weeklong series on suspects in high profile crimes.

And, on a lighter note, from runway model to talk show TV host, Tyra Banks has shown hundreds of hairstyles over the years. But nothing compares to what she sported when talking with CNN's Larry King.

Join us for these stories and much more at 10pm ET. See you then!

Don't feel sorry for Elizabeth, she's a very smart woman. I believe when John told her about the affair he also told her about the baby. This scandal has allowed Elizabeth to seal a book deal to protect the financial interest of her children which doesn't include her husband's love child. Don't think for one minute Elizabeth continued to trust John to be in charge of she and her childrens financial destiny. Women could learn a lot from Elizabeth.

I am asking this as loyal Democrate and without any sarcasm, why does it seem as though it is always the Democratic politicians who are cheating on their wives?

And off topic, why does everyone including the media refer to the President as Mr. Obama rather than President Obama? I'm pretty sure no other President has been called Mr. instead of President...

Another vivid proof that entire top level people in this country and likely in lots of countries lying big time to ordinary people with such a good role playing. Thanks Anderson to unearth some of these shames. There are 1000 more Madoff, J Edwards and Cheny out there but they are a bit smarter and crooker so we haven't heard of them. Such a pity that civilized world is working this way, Human nature you think? Power, Money, Excitement, like scarface movies says. It is Such a Shame, Wake-Up America

Mrs. Edwards's comment to Oprah was that this Women refering to Racheal Hunter did not impact her life. Wake up Mrs. Edwards her child could be a sister to your children and that does impact your life.

I don't know if John Edwards' problems are due to emotional instability on his part, poor judgement, or some other reason. Whichever of these is the case, any one is enough to knock him out of serious consideration.

I think the lesson to learn it that for prospective candidates for the presidency, we ought to very closely look at similar judgements and other personal actions in an effort to determine if the person campaiging for the highest office in the land has the emotional depth and stability to handle it.. After all, we know the job of President is stressful by design. Therefore, we ought to weed out those who may look bright and shiny but in fact, don't have the emotional wherewithal to survive and prosper in the Presidency. A good example was Rikchard Nixon - he had plenty of intellect and experience, but not the emotional stabilty.

Just when we thought we'd be able to forget Linda Tripp and Susan Carpenter MacMillan, we get another "freind" seeking her 15 minutes of fame. Why do we give this stuff a platform of legitimacy?

this story is not about the other woman!

who cares about JOHN EDWARDS...the COWARD!...who cares who he sleeps with...THIS "pretty boy" will now pay the price of his lies!

my question is what is wrong with Senator Edward's wife, Elizabeth ???...why does she support him ...lie for him???...has she no respect for herself??...why does she not just turf the guy!!!...

ELIZABETH wake up and recapture yourself ...your life!

On the other side of this coin, what kind of a woman goes after a
married man, with children....and his wife has breast cancer?

My daughter is a college student who was an early and enthusiastic supporter of John Edwards'. I shudder to think that she could put her trust in such a man.

Edwards is in the wrong as we know..lets get real here, cancer or not, she already knows of this child and openly admits she will have no part in the innocent childs life which is fine if this is what she chooses.
John therefore needs to be, so she needs too accept this, or leave.
She has blinders on and is hanging on to John and feels alone, & is a very scared woman and I do believe she thinks this is all going to go away.
She can't protect her kids from this forever.
Talk about standing by your man..is this pityful or what.
I really thought she was intelligent..after reading her book, this woman is in denial..cancer is a horrible way to die and obviously it has spread to her brain.
No rational person could think this way.

I have read and reread Elizabeth's book titled "Resilience". If it were not for the fact that she has young children who need not have the death of a marriage and the death of a mother, she would be long gone. She is living with a man she neither respects nor 'knows'. We need to cut her some slack for trying to hold things together. The angst she feels is likely more related to her personal upheaval than her terminal illness. It has been a long while since someone has caused me to view them with disdain as have the actions of John Edwards and the woman who put her own needs ahead of the wedding vows his wife expected him to honor.

I pray for Elizabeth and the children that they find peace with all the negative reporting.

Elizabeth please sue him for everything you can leave in your will your wishes for loving & caring people to help raise your children if GOD takes you home and leave everything in trust for your children. Be a example for your children that this is not LOVE and you did not ask for this and do not deserve this nor do they do you realy want them to be raised by them ( Father & Mistress) if you are not here to love and protect. You are a ANGEL already and my pray's go with you for strengh today and always

John Edwards what a coward, like most men, once they are caught. However, I find that I'm more disgusted at Rielle. What kind of a woman would bring a child in the world under these circumstances. The man is married and already has children? I'm ashamed of women like her, and friends like the guy who now decides to tell the truth once he gets a book deal. And as for the woman, who was interviewed by Anderson, go crawl back under your rock from which you came. The only person I feel for is Elizabeth and her children.

If THE BIG IF that was John Edwards' first and ONLY adultery, I would concede that their marriage was strong. But, I'm a cynic and I'm pretty sure it's just the beginning of coming out of his adulteries. Remember another famous adulterer? Bill Clinton. After Jennifer Flowers, we learned of 7 more other women.

Maybe the women still remain in the dark by respect for Mrs Edwards' illness. Once she's gone, see the flood gates of "I too had an affair with John Edwards"

Hi everyone! Um, not sure if anyone else notices of even cares, but the US has bigger problems than following around someone's private life. So, if everyone could focus their attention on getting us out of Afghanistan (which is yet another place where we've stuck our noses), then we can end this "war" that should've never been initiated. Thanks very much!

The entire Edwards' debacle is disturbing; however, now that John is without a political life, the salacious details of his domestic delimma are not news worthy. All the 'what ifs' cannot change the past or, in this case, improve the future. Let it rest.

Don't cry for Elizabeth Edwards. As a wife she is NOT to be pitied. She is a political wife. She knew of her husband's affair. According to what I just heard from your show. She CHOSE to stand by her man and LIED to all of us in accord with her lying, cheating, overly handsome husband.

She, like all political women who stand by their adulterous husbands DESERVES what she got. Too bad she's terminally ill. It's life. Cancer strikes the super famous and rich and the poor. Her cancer is no different than thousands of other women,

Mrs Edwards could have got herself some dignity by separating from him. Or something, anything of that nature. Anything except standing by him lying to all of us. They deserve each other.

Why is it that there is only one bad guy here. This women knew who John Edwards was and about his wife. There are words for women like her. What he did is very wrong but it is between him, his wife & God. I don't feel he owes me or anyone else an apology. It's time people thought of Elizabeth and this baby and keep it out of the news. Before other through stones they should look at their own lives and quit judging, it's not their place.

    Hi All,
This is totally a last blow for his wife.. I admired elizabeth for standing up for her husband and having the courage and decency to handle this. I am so sorry that she had to put up with this indecent and eggregious behaviour. Not sure what the other women sees in him... either..
I had heard that love is blind.. but didnt know it was this blind.... for him to forget that his partner of 30 years is on the verge of dying and for her to not see thru him..
God knows what will happen to their kids and how mentally difficult this journey will be for them..

A politician lying and having an affair, why is that shocking? Too bad he didn't think to use protection or at least make sure the woman was on the pill. Politicians and jocks never surprise me with their antics.

I actually have sympathy for all the parties in this sad story. I believe that John and Elizabeth entered into an unhealthy, needy, dependent type of "love" when they lost their son in a car accident, from which I do not believe either recovered in a healthy manner. They made the decision to take the "risk" in having more children (by fertility) in a place from loss and it may have contributed to her cancer. In my view they are both selfish and sad. What can you say about a woman who intenionally goes after a married man?? Sad. All the children of these unions will surely need therapy, in the future, as the adults do now.

As for Ms. Hunter, well, she needs to take a good long look at
the kind of man she chose to have a child with.
What if she gets a terminal illness while with him one day,
will he stay by her side and remain faithful?
WAKE UP Ms. Hunter, you fool...

Politicians DO need to be held accountable for their actions and when they lie, EVERYONE needs to know when, why and how?

Thank God he did not get any further, another lier in

Why the focus on the fact that he cheated on his "terminally ill" wife? Isn't it bad enough that he cheated on his wife regardless of her health.

It's politicians / leaders like John Edwards who make it so hard for people to trust them after all the deceptions and lies. Is that what all politicians, or government officials, do...is lie and cheat? Did their parents, grandparents raise them to think that this is ok? Or that it comes with the job?? C'mon...our children are watching all of this now and it's sad that one day they will be studying this in their history class. Now it's very possible that this innocent child will be reading about her and her mistress mother in her history class as well. ALL of you politicians need to think about how your deceptions affect everyone!!

Edwards needs to stop lying and respect his wife and children by telling the truth. At least he could have give them that dignity.

"Trash" like this DOES belong in news stories. Seems men and women both just constantly need to be reminded....when you play, you pay....the story never grows old. This knowledge should be public – it goes to the very core of what someone's true character is.
