Live Blog from the Anchor Desk 9/1/09

In Southern California–where peak fire season hasn’t even officially begun yet–a huge and deadly wildfire continues to burn out of control tonight.

We’ll also have the latest on the Jaycee Lee Dugard kidnapping investigation. Officials believe at least two unsolved kidnappings may be linked to Phillip Garrido, the man charged with kidnapping and raping Dugard.

Tonight we’re launching a series of reports on the illegal sale of human organs. Our worldwide investigation has uncovered a thriving black market for human kidneys–right here in the United States.

Here are some of them:

1) Keep it short (we don't have time to read a "book")
2) Don't write in ALL CAPS (there's no need to yell)
3) Use your real name (first name only is fine)
4) No links
5) Watch your language (keep it G-rated; PG at worst - and that includes $#&*)

I hate to ask this, but do we know if the children were abused?

Re/ Phillip Garrido, With a 50 year scentance ...why was he out of jail in the first place? Where are our ritghts to be protected from these kinds of people.

@Chuck Savage...polite correction, we need the supporting rehab programs, not more prisons.

I feel bad for those children what is going to happen to them when they grow up? They are going to find out how they were conceived and its this whole story is just heartbreaking.

I think this Garrido's situation is a perfect example of people turning a "blind eye" and not wanting to get involved in a sketchy situation. If my neighbor's yard looked like this or I knew he was a sex offender with kids running around, I would call. Like one of the officers who caught him stated on Good Morning America, it's easier to apologize if you are wrong then apologizing for not stopping something.

Why don't you ever bring up the topic of just plain old EVIL. The woman and man who did these horrendous crimes to children should be kept alive just to torture him daily. A person like Wes Craven should be consulted when trying to give justice to EVIL, EVIL, people lke these. Delusional, etc, etc, etc, may explain eposides of bad behaviour but decades of such evil behaviour is called plain EVIL.

all Jaycee needs is support from both family and community. As long as she knows she's loved her mind will scope out her true loved ones.

Let's not forget that Phillip Garrido had an accomplice in this monstrous act. More than one person has said that because he had a wife they didn't think anything was amiss. Perhaps we should pay more attention to the fact that this quick dismissal of strange behavior was on the sole basis that Mr. Garrido had a seemingly normal, if not submissive, wife.

Erica, yours was the 1st comprehensive piece that has been done of the wife!

I will be watching with much interest how the legal system deals with her. I truly don't beleive that there is much defense (abused, etc.) for this woman's actions.

I detest these sex offenders. They are in just about every city in every state, not to mention migrating overseas to spread the abuse. We are too lenient on them; we need harsher laws against sexual predators in order to protect and save our children's lives.

Garrido's 11 yr. old captor had 2 full term pregnancies which oled to deliveries. Were these babies delivered in a hospital? If so, what does the record show of the family connection, i.e. father?

I would think that under those circumstances you would have to develop some coping mechanism just to survive.

There is no rehabilitation from pedophilia. It's such an ingrained thing that even those people in 'recovery' will never be truly well or trustworthy. Ever.

  16. Annie Burke

It's common knowledge that sex offenders are never "cured". So to remove all doubt about whether they will re-offend or not is simple....Keep them locked up!!

People like Garrido and Manson seek out people with weak minds that are easily manipulated. They may be evil, but they are also very clever.

What a disturbing case I feel terrible for Jaycee and her family. Your last segment was good, so much more needs to be reported on this topic. Think of how many other children this happens to everyday and that are out there.

Hello Anderson , awesome show ! Again confusing as to why the cops never looked in the back yard when they were sent to the house . God bless the kids and hopefully they will be ok !!!!!! This case is so ongoing and has to be stopped , our kids are our future !!!!!

It's obvious that we must understand Phillip and Nancy Garrido's past if we want to understand why they performed their monstrous actions.

I dont think the US values women and children. The justice system acts as if sexual crimes against them is par for the course. When will we realize that our future rests in how well we protect our children and the women who raise them?

As far as his wife goes, what is her story? She looks like she was abused. by him as well....Did she participate like that crazy family from South Georgia who raped and mutilated that 6 year old boy??? It is hard to trust anyone nowadays

Glad to hear there is some containment of those fires in California. Some of those flames look like blowtorches or the inside of a blast furnace. That area is particularly vulnerable to a wildfire because it hasn't seen on in some 60 years so there's a tremdous growth of brush and thus fuel.

The point about a lack of parole officers is an important one in Erica's intvw w/ John Walsh. This question might've been asked, but do parole officers visit parolees at home.

    @ Mike, Syracuse.

We don't need to fund for the building of more prisons. We need more rehabilitation centers.

Why not compare the composite drawiing of the 'kidnapper' of 1988 & '89 be compared to the photo taken of Jaycee's kidnapper when first arrested for his initial rape arrest in the '70's ?

Terrific interview with John Walsh Erica!

@Jo Ann, Norht Royalton, Ohio, you make an excellent point! I have already written to my Fed. Representative and will write my senators tomorrow.

If more people would keep constant contact with WA DC, Congress would Have to act.

Thank you John Walsh. The problem is there is no way to monitor them effectively. Parole officers cannot handle them. Look online in your own community. I have. They are everywhere. The sheer numbers amaze me. NNo

We must applaud John Walshes work and his continued commitment to helping protect our children. He is right we must keep these offenders away from our children and out of our commmunity.

Let's not give Garrido and his wife an excuse, they are just plain evil. Sometimes that is the only explanation.

I think we really need to consider the other countries way of doing things with sex offenders.

I believe Norway places them on an isolated area for longer than most prison sentences, it might be forever if they continue to committ the acts. I'm not sure though.

    September 1, 2009 at 10:17 pm |
  39. Chuck Savage

    @ Jo Ann.

You're completely right. This is something that people deserve to know when moving to a new house for example, or if a sex offender is moving in.

John Walsh raises a good point. There need to be more parole officers. One person can't possibly watch over 100 people. However, that means paying more taxes to hire more people. Law abiding citizens have to ask themselves if paying more in taxes for better services is worth it.

I find it astounding that the police never checked out the backyard after there were complaints. I mean, seriously! Obviously the campus police officers could tell there was something wrong. The local police are despicable.

@Gady Mayen, if you violate parole, you get a one way ticket to jail.

Not only that John, but he kept his appointments regularly with his parole officer while his kept a missing child on his property.

Imagine that....Bush signed a bill in Adam Walsh's name and didn't fund it.

I want to know why Jaycee's stepfather is all over the TV, yet said in so many words on Larry King last night that his estranged wife is not telling him what's going on with Jaycee and her daughters because he's going on all the TV shows.

Greetings to All! How can the public protect themselves from predators like Garrido? It seems that in this case ,also our protection, the police, didn't do their job either.Do we just stay home all the time or never trust any one?I'm afraid to check to see how many sex offenders live close to me....
