A girl abducted in 1991 as an 11-year-old has been found alive in California, the El Dorado County sheriff's office said Thursday.

Jaycee Dugard is in good health, the office said in a statement, but provided no details.

Earlier Thursday, Carl Probyn, Dugard's stepfather, told CNN that an FBI agent had called his wife, Terry, on Wednesday afternoon to tell her that Dugard had been found.

The girl was last seen walking to her bus stop in South Lake Tahoe, California, on June 10, 1991, according to the FBI.

We as the public need to be respectful of this woman. There must have been some incredible reasons that she had not come forward. Image the hurtful, fearful things an 11yr old could have been told. And then to be scared to do so for so many reasons and for so long. It is so amazing but let the details come out as they may. Or rather....may not. I am sorry for the children and the lives they face within this crazy story. The couple on the other hand are sick and need to be locked up. His words so far are repulsive.

Why didn't the police 2 years ago really follow up with one of the neighbors comments about these pieces of garbage!! Missed opportunity!! Too bad this wasn't in Texas where they have an express lane to the chair!! Totally horrific!!

I hate to think what all this young woman had to endure...especially having to bear 2 children since she was abducted – think about it; this young woman was raped, gotten pregnant, went through a first pregnancy with no family to support her, and then probably had natural childbirth with nothing to ease the pain at the hands of two people who were not trained medical people. She was lucky nothing went wrong.

She was gone so long and went through so much I hope she will write a book about it. Other people write books about lesser experiences – this would be one that pretty unique.

As a survivor, I know it will take decades of therapy and patience for JC and the 2 chilrden to reassimilate. Any success, however limited, is a victory. Look at how much the profession has learned since Steven Stayner’s case. Dn’t be fooled by Elisabeth Smart’s case. She has found peace but she does not live in mainstream society. She lives in a patriarchal culture based on repression and obedience. It will take a lot of work to bring these 3 survivors to be free living adults with healthy relationships.

Jaycee Dugard walked into the CONCORD POLICE station not in San Francisco. The news got it all wrong! Concord is like 30 miles outside San Francisco. Concord is also near the city Antioch where she was being held by the man who kidnapped her.

Why was she unable to come forward sooner? Was she held prisoner by her abductors?

So she willingly walked into a Police Station 18 years later and she remembers everything. My question is why she waited this long or what happened that prompted her to come forward NOW instead of earlier.

Under what circumstances was she adbucted in 1991? I understand that the male of the couple is on the list of sexual offenders. Was he on that list in 1991? Was there even such a list in 1991? Was the woman of the couple a known sex offender?? Thank you

Absolutely incredible!!! Wonderful for the family and police.

re: authorities had "Jaycee and the people who she was with"

It would be great if the people who abducted her could help clarify to authorities what type of people would steal a child from a good home, give her a new home, and keep her alive. I mean, it's not like taking in a stray animal.
