Photo Gallery: The Obamas on vacation

Program Note: Tune in tonight to hear more about presidential vacations from Erica Hill on AC360° at 10 p.m. ET.

AC360°

President Obama is on vacation with his family in Martha's Vineyard. On his first official day of R&R he played golf and went up against his wife in a tennis match.

White House spokesman Bill Burton told reporters that it remains a secret who won. As for the rest of the week, Burton offered few details, saying the president himself doesn't even have a particular schedule. He did take a break to make some news today, to announce his plans to nominate Ben Bernanke to a second term as head of the Federal Reserve. Take a look at these photos from his vacation.

President Obama and his family disembark Air Force One to begin their vacation in Martha's Vineyard.

The President had a busy golf schedule on day one.

Local establishments go all out to welcome the first family.

President Obama hits the course on day two of his vacation.

He did take a break to make some news on Tuesday, to announce his plans to nominate Ben Bernanke to a second term as head of the Federal Reserve.

    @Isabel
I try to explain to you,why President Obama needs vacation after 7 month in office. First because he is a father and a husband, and i think to do a job like he did and he will do for the next years, he needs a happy family life.Second,he is on a good political way,but he has to do it step by step .
So please dont be so severe with him,he deserved this vacation.

Did anyone check out Obama's posted, "Vacation Reading List?" If he even manages to read through it while on vacation, he'll have to burn through 300 pages daily. And that's just for fun. I think the man has enough on his itinerary, surely we can give the leader of the free world five minutes peace, and allow him to enjoy his dwindling family time.

    Hey, SUZI.......
Obama has put in more work since taking office than most people put in in a year! You need to READ the news. not just look at the pictures...all those trips he made to countries ...travel made by a president, especially when traveling day after day for 10 days..never spending more than 1 or 2 days in a one place, is done to meet with foreign leaders and to discuss problems/ or sometimes it's just to try to jump start a dialogue where there has not been one between 2 countries, Getting on a plane, going from country to country, constantly being center stage always having to be ready to say and do the right thing because the world is watching and listening.. No time for sightseeing, Sounds like a GREAT vacation!!!!!!

Suzi, go read a paper, learn something about the world of politics before you make comments that make you appear stupid.

Of course he has to go everywhere on AF1 it protects him. And anyway any aircraft he is in gets called AF1. I see Mrs. Obama did not deplane wearing shorts. Was she worried she's be critizied again? How silly we are, let the lady put shorts on once and awhile for goodness sakes!

I saw the Texting PA today, very impactful. I'm also curious, Anderson, did it make you think twice about texting while driving?

Though, he has not spent a year in the office but he has accumulated enough hour to warrant this vacation, please, American leave your president alone for a minute to relax

The fact that is different here is GWB, went to his own ranch. There was no extra fees paid for renting a resort, or anything along those lines. The Obama's have been many places, since his swearing in, and they have taken various family members, and friends along with them. At whose expense, is the question?

Please...during his first year in office, the last President spent more time on "vacation" at his ranch in Crawford, TX than in DC.
To the ones saying he's been on vacation all summer...he was supporting our national parks & trying to spark interest in them to encourage people to visit...that's part of his job too...
He has a family he loves and who love him and want to spend time with him when they can. He's balancing being a father, husband, and leader of our country. It's a different view that what the American people are used to seeing. We've always watched what our President & his family are doing (to the media comment). The difference is that this family looks different & acts differently. Running our country is very important, but so is marriage & family to them, and there's nothing wrong with that. More families should take note. Plus...when you are the President of the United States...you are never really on "vacation". You can't just go off & not pay attention to what's happening in our country & the world (so no...he doesn't have to wait a year to earn vacation time)...this is like no other job in the world. It's easy for people to be critical when you're not the one doing the job.

I love the fact that our president is so visible. Obvious he has nothing to hide. Think of where we might be if he hadn't been so assertive in getting things going around the country. You're doing a great job Mr. President and deserve a nice vacation with your family. Hubby and I are confident that you will get the Healthcare Reform right.

don't you usually have to work a year before vacation time is accumulated? and excuse me....but he's been on a family vacation all summer- europe, grand canyon...do you get the picture? don't think we need to see a shot of the president's foot while he's playing golf. i would rather see a soldier's boot with his/ her story. so here's the message, attn. all media, try reporting real news. we'll just assume the obama family is loving life.

    Anderson,

Have you seen the new psa about texting while driving?
You aren't still doing that? ARE YOU?

I'm not a texter, but certainly wouldn't do it while driving.

I really enjoy you and your show. I especially like that it is so
    easy to make you laugh.

So, what is the First Lady doing while the president putter around the golf course? This seems to be more of a respite from the health reform debates - a way of toning down the volume, than a real vacation. Supposedly, President Obama brought along several volumes of books which would keep the average person busy reading for every waking hour of the photo op vacation.

In todays's political world, one should always take the high road. There's much less traffic.

About the President's vacation, I would like to understand why is he on vacation if there is so much to do and if he is in office for only 7 months?

That may be a tradition or have another plausible explanation, but it is difficult to understand.

If you can help me understand, I appreciate it!

Have a great time Mr. President and know Universal Health Care is significant in many ways than one!For example Universal Coverage should also mean if you are out of the country you can get the same caliber health checkup or imergency care t han in your own town only by carrying your Universal Health Care Coverage Card! And we can teach our prevention knowledge to the world and having them follow us for being connected with us in our Universal HealthCare Card!

Your golf will be relaxing and right on if you can let go and focus on the ball not on health care right now and hopefully you have learnedto relax anyway even if you have quit smoking which is most preventive!

We need an internal Peace Corp so that clinics and
medical care is just as available to our citizens as
it is tropical islands and foreign countries where we
    set up.

Did he really have to take Air force 1, the boeing 747 only to Martha's Vineyard? That's not right.

Looks like the Obama's are having a good time on their vacation. I hope the time away from the office gives Obama some mental relaxation so he can return with a fresh outlook on all the problems we have facing us.

Health care reform is something that we all should be pushing for. It's amazing that we spend billions of dollars to help others in different countries but argue over help our own in the United States. Quit the bickering and start working for a change congressmen. Do something positive for a change instead of pointing the finger at the President.
