Live Blog from the Anchor Desk 8/24/09

A paper bombshell exploded today when a Houston court released documents showing that Michael Jackson died of lethal levels of the powerful anesthetic propofol.

And that’s not all—the Associated Press is quoting a single law enforcement official, who says the L.A. County Coroner has ruled Michael Jackson's death a homicide.

We’ll have the latest on all of this breaking news.

The Justice Department has launched a criminal investigation into harsh questioning of detainees during President George W. Bush's war on terrorism.   We’ll dig deeper tonight.

This is very sad MJ news, but I'm always happy to see Dr Drew and Anderson on screen together.

If the doctor didn't know of the other drugs MJ was on, he could easily given too high a dose which may not have had adverse reactions otherwise.

Good evening Anderson, Erica, Isabel, everyone. How can the facts on the affidavit and Dr. Murray's account be different? Is the affidavit in error?

If the affidavit is in error, then maybe Michael Jackson didn't receive the massive doses of medication that Dr. Drew Pinsky was just talking about.

Why does the list of medications that you're noting Anderson, differ from the list I heard in a report by Randi Kaye a couple of hours ago?

I'm just a layperson, not an MD, but even I know that the list and combinations of drugs given with the final admin. of Divipran, is enough to stop an army of elephants. There are enough TV shows and articles out there to educate anyone on this.

Dr. Murray was fully aware that the cocktail he was administrating would be deadly but perhaps Michael Jackson had a strong hold over Dr. Murray and he had no choice but to do what he said..

    @Devna – I certainly will. I'm having surgery in a few months.

This is based on what Dr. Murray said, but this guy hasn't been totally honest anyway.

So I hope your anesthesiologist talks about the fact that 25mg is a sub clinical dose which only last for a couple minutes

I work in a Veterinary Clinic, Propofol is used to anesthetise animals, but is short acting. Is Propofol short acting in humans? and if so, why would he even be using it?

This has got to be hard news for the kids. What does this news mean for them. Who is going to be responsible for taking their dad away from them so soon?

Good evening Anderson and Fellow Bloggers -

Hope everyong had a good weekend.

MJ was obviously an addict is the meds given before the propofol didn't put him asleep -

@Devna. Yes, I'm come to really appreciate Randi Kaye's great work on the MiJak case – and others too!

Hi everyone, I knew this would be ruled a homicide. I still can't believe MJ is gone its a very sad situation

  15. Sabrina in Los Angeles

Wow, that is an extreme amount of meds.

It is very sad that help wasn't sought sooner. It seems to be much like it was with Heath Ledger....a celeb in trouble and not wanting the negative press so they don't seek help in time.

With Health it was an accident...with Jackson it was not....both sad.

This news should come as no surprise to anyone, right? But my heart goes out to Michael and his family. They certainly didn't deserve this!

  21. Lisa A. Philadelphia, PA

No wonder MJ's heart stopped. Did Dr. Murray tell the emergency technicians MJ had all this medicine in his system? Would it have made a difference in the type of care given?

Micheal Jackson's high dosage of propofol should have been administered closely not by his bedside nurse, the drug is potent enough to put horse on sleep!

I am so sad that MJ died this way. This doctor did not keep his Hippocratic oath. This is just very sad for his family especially his children.

  25. Sandra Robertson, GA

Good evening Anderson. I am shocked at the fact Dr. Murray was administering more than one anesthetic, not to mention other drugs, to Michael Jackson. I would think just the anesthetics alone, even in small doses, on a regular basis is enough to kill someone.

So sad with MJ's death but he's still alive. Michael was and IS music and his music will never die! Even my students (7 years old) can't stop talking about him and singing his songs!

  28. Bruno

Dr. Murray's action before the death of MJ do not amount to a crime, rather his actions amount to negligence in his practice of a non criminal nature. If charged, the information out so far shows the case against him would be easy to beat.

  29. Cynthia, NC

Good evening. How could Dr. Murray give Michael Jackson the combination of drugs during the night and then top it off with 25 mg of propofal? Even if Michael wanted the propofal to help him sleep, Dr. Murray had to have known he was playing with a dangerous drug cocktail.

Hey Everyone! The weekend was great, hope everyone had a nice one as well.
Wow, that is amazing how many drugs that Michael Jackson was given hour by hour. So much!

    August 24, 2009 at 10:06 pm |

This was less of a homicide than a suicide.

I though MiJak had Lupus which attacks the organs. How could his body metabolize all those meds? Did Murray consider that?

Heeey Everyone! Erica, Anderson, and the rest of the CNN crew!

This story about Michael Jackson is just so bizzare! i cant believe his doctor killed him..! but i just want to know why, why would Dr. Murray want to kill the king of pop?

might there be other doctors also responsible for MJ's death?...I think so

    August 24, 2009 at 10:05 pm |
  36. Sarah Atlanta, GA

This is stupid. Michael Jackson is just as responsible for his death as his doctor. No one made him take these drugs and he had to have known what he was doing was dangerous.

Good evening Anderson and all bloggers. Happy Monday. Well, no surprises here really for the MJ report. All those drugs. It boggles the mind. So tragic. We still don't know who the heck Dr. Murray was on the phone with so long.

Hi Anderson, yes i had agreat weekend! Hello to Erica &Team 360.

    Hellow fellow bloggers.

Wow, the amount of meds that the Dr. gave to MJ is impressive Any normal person would have been knocked out for hours

However, it does demonstrate how high MJ's tolerance to mes was..

Good evening, everyone! Hope you had a great weekend as well, Anderson.

And finally Michael Jackson's death is being called a homicide. Shouldn't have taken so long to rule on his cause of death.

It's sad and shocking to find out that Michael Jackson died from a homocide. As much as it was Michael Jackson's responsibility to take care of himself, it was his Doctors' job to make sure he did NOT become an addict, no matter what the monetary gain may be.
