This just in, religious belief not only makes people feel better for positives aspects of life after death, but it also assures them that whomever has done them wrong shall burn with Satan. Oh, how beautiful God is! Madoff should be in jail though. Hallelujah!

Its hard to think of a punishment that would even come close to being adequate given the immense proportions of Madoff's crime. Jail doesn't do it – even at 150 years, he's going to a place where he has little freedom but he also doesn't have to worry about paying the bills, having food to eat, or a roof over his head. He has to live with the knowledge of what he did to others and what he did to his family. Reportedly his sons have not seen or talked to him since he told them what he had done on December 10th. I doubt that will change anytime soon; so, he lost his children and any grandchildren he had and that for the rest of their lives when they think of him all they will remember about him is this crime – not a very good legacy. He has put his wife at financial risk; she has agreed to a plea deal where she gave up the 80 million in her name and settled for 2.5 million but from what I read the Feds can still go after that 2.5 million. So she has no security or support in her old age.

So Madoff has lost too but he lost more than money and possessions. I'm not discounting anyone else's loss – it was a huge loss of money and trust to lose. However, Madoff lost things of more value- the love and support of his children, his wife, and the thought that in generations to come his descendants will not look back on him with pride but with shame. Maybe that in the end balances the books somewhat.
