Editor's Note: Dr. George Tiller was shot and killed while serving as an usher at his Wichita, Kansas, church Sunday morning, according to police. Tiller was one of the few U.S. physicians who still performed late-term abortions and had survived a 1993 shooting outside his clinic. The shooting prompted U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to direct federal marshals to "offer protection to other appropriate people and facilities around the nation." Read his full statement here.

Statement of the Attorney General

"The murder of Doctor George Tiller is an abhorrent act of violence, and his family is in our thoughts and prayers at this tragic moment. Federal law enforcement is coordinating with local law enforcement officials in Kansas on the investigation of this crime, and I have directed the United States Marshals Service to offer protection to other appropriate people and facilities around the nation. The Department of Justice will work to bring the perpetrator of this crime to justice. As a precautionary measure, we will also take appropriate steps to help prevent any related acts of violence from occurring."

I don't believe anyone had the right to pass judgement on Dr. George Tiller, and take his life. This is a very tragic event. I'm not in a position to pass judgement on his decsions to do the work he did.

I don't know how, including myself, after much reflection, can perceive that a fetus is not living? I understand how women want to have control over their bodies, but how is an innocent, conceived baby able to control their life? Self-control, birth control is where the focus of control lies.

We protect plants, the animals, endangered species etc. rights. How is abortion not an "abhorrent act of violence" on an also living being? Will Eric Holder protect unborn living humans? This whole issue confounds me.

Dr. Tiller took his risks when he decided to take his stand. He took his position knowing full well the risks. That was his personal decision, just like pro life or pro choice is such a personal decision.
