Drew Peterson, the former police sergeant who authorities call the prime suspect in the disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, has been indicted on murder charges related to his third wife, the Illinois state attorney's office said.
Illinois state police said Peterson was taken into custody Thursday.
Charles B. Pelkie, state attorney for Will County, Illinois, said a grand jury indicted Peterson in the murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio, whose death had been ruled an accidental drowning.
He said the grand jury continues to meet and is studying the possibility of charges in Stacy Peterson's disappearance.
After Stacy Peterson went missing in October 2007, media frenzy and police scrutiny on Peterson revealed Savio had died mysteriously a few years earlier during a nasty divorce.
Savio died just before the division of the marital assets was finalized, making Drew Peterson the sole beneficiary.

Finally! I am curious as to how this dupposed drowing in a dry bath tub occurred. What did the first autopsy report say about her lungs? Was there any water in them?
What"s the story with drew's kin that said he helped him dispose of the body? Two wife's in a row murdered? Does"t look like a rocket scientist to fiqure this one out.
At what times are you there till 3am and at 6am. tell me
If Drew Peterson is inocent, it would suprise me. It's hard to believe that one person has had that much tragedy happen in his life – all of it to his wifes. Talk about a BLACK WIDOW spider.... I don't recall him showing much if any emotion when his last wife went missing, which seems pretty odd. Run ladys, run.....!!
He does not deserve bond. what if he has stacy somewhere waiting to ne release just to go and kill her if he already hasn't. i watch enough 1st 48 to see enough death. come on people open our eyes. that it is someone daughter that probably still has a chance if we keep him in jail
He is guilty look st his face expressions. he laughs at the cameras loves the attention. why are women so likely to feel sadden and ease to ne with someone accused of murder? i pray stacy is ok.
Its about time!!! I'ed love to be on that jury! If this guy walks(any longer) it will be a real travesty of justice!he's
I live just 15 minutes from Peterson's home in Illinois and after following this tragic case, my comment is "finally."
For 18 months, this ex-cop has shown absolutely no emotion about the 'loss' of either wife, Stacey or Kathleen, regardless of who has interviewed him. He is obviously a socio-path. I don't think there's any question in anyone's mind that he killed both wives. Let's hope the IL State Police, FBI, Will County State's Attorney, pathologists, toxocologists and the grand jury have the evidence to prove his crimes with evidence.
There is a fine line between a cop and a criminal–this is the line. With all due respect to the many fine law-enforcement professionals, there are rotten apples. Obviously, Drew's manipulative personality and intimidation influenced the botched Savio investigation by his own local department. My close-by community has suffered from criminal cops in the past and I've seen first-hand the intimidation of junior officers as well as police chiefs.
The question remains: who is policing the police?
IT'S ABOUT TIME!! I know justice is slow, but really? Give the bastard what he gave his last two wives. No MERCY!!
Bout time.
