Good morning, everyone. This morning there is plenty of news percolating in Washington.
President Obama is set to meet with the Pakistani and Afghani presidents today to discuss the insurgent violence in the region. The Administration wants Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari to work together to fight al Qaeda and other extremists.
At the same time, Congress is debating a now 94 billion dollar war funding bill that would fund the wars we’re fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan through September.
Hopefully tonight, we will talk to Fareed Zakaria about the foreign policy challenges we’re facing in the region.
At the same time, we have David Mattingly working on a story about all of the young people who have died in a rash of Chicago violence lately. Why are we losing so many of our children in the city and no one is sure why.
David spoke to one woman who lives in the neighborhood where a lot of these murders are happening. She set up a memorial tribute. She started with one and now she has 150 bricks in a memorial house she built in the empty lot across from her home. She is beating the drum, telling the community they need to do more. She says enough is enough. Family members want to know what is being done by the city of Chicago and the city’s police. Hopefully tonight we will have some answers.
And legalizing pot, Governor Schwarzenegger says we should be talking about it. He says that doesn’t mean he supports it, but it’s a discussion we should have. What do you think?
Tune in tonight at 10p

hello,
the fire season in the west is going to be more than anyone expects this year and the same goes for the hurricane season, they will post it as low to average and then change it to above average. these need to be taken more seriously than last year. the only reason so much attention was put on Gustav was of the location and Ike was almost ignored. big earthquake soon too.
legalize it
Society's diversity has a great deal to do with Chicago's neighborhoods, and all large, small metropolitan area's throughout America today. Author Joeseph Campbell (1904-1987) wrote a few fasinating ("The Power of Myth" a documentary film, aired Bill Moyer's 1987) books regarding the world's acceptance regarding a "Elemental Force"with the main theme emphasising, "Myth and the Human Phyche" interpretating dreams, and symbolism (symbols,metaphors,imagery,etc.). Mr.Campbell spent much of his life-time,and studies (linquistic emeritus) throughout the entire world accumulating, and postulating his empirical studies. Returning home in his forties (1940's) having noticed a profound ,and somewhat disturbing America, woefully uninformed to the world myths, and culture. His thesis, if I might ellaborate, were to educate societies; small, medium, large, etc.,of "Universal Truths" in layman terms, seeking to broaden/enhance individuals, and groups ("Follow Your Bliss") of life. Joeseph Campbell's magnum opus"The Masks of God" ,and "Historical Altlas of World Mythology"(four part subtext) should be taught in our schools as mandatory reading in all social-studies curriculum. Finally, not to bemoan the pathetic behavior of our youth today,we must not forget the abject parallels to their (alot of blame to go around) parents/mentors! These kids are crying out for help, trying to find themselves desparately, voices aimlessly falling upon deaf ears! Thus, I will end with the last question, and answer Bill Moyers, asked Joeseph Cambell after airing his (Power and Myth Film) documentary: Moyers;and poetry gets to unseen reality? Campbell; That which is beyond even the concept of reality, that which transcends all thought. The myth puts you there all the time, gives you a line to connect with the mystery which you are,... PS. It is not our children failing us, but quite the contrary.
re: " Why are we losing so many of our children in the city and no one is sure why." Of course we know why. There are only so many reasons teen deaths occur. Let's not pretend we dont know ! And thank you to the lady doing the memorial, what a wonderful neighbor you are.
I do have a problem with this thought: " Family members want to know what is being done by the city of Chicago and the city’s police." Did I misunderstand who is killing the teens– are the police killing them?
We cant have it both ways: we cant have the "no snitch policy" and then DEMAND the police and the city stop the killings. People of Chicago: snitch snitch snitch... it can be done anonymously.
I'm with Gov. Schwarzenegger: let's all sit down and smoke the peace pipe and discuss the pros and cons of legalizing it. Pretty soon: pot will become the modern day cigerettes and we will have found a new, better drug to take the place of pot. ::: e x h a l e s a puff of smoke::::
