Tonight on AC360°, we take you inside the cockpit of a plane where a passenger is at the controls after the pilot died in flight. Some very tense moments. Air traffic control operators did an amazing job helping the passenger safely land the plane.

And, don't miss Erica Hill's webcast on the daring landing and tonight's other headlines during the commercials. Watch our WEBCAST

Evening Anderson, Erica, David, and all you excellent bloggers out there. Just logged in, but was watching the show. Phil Spector finally found guilty... sad thing is, this isn't the first time I recall he was charged on something (anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).

@Dave, you can't be serious. How can you call this a knee-jerk reaction by the Navy?

Praying doesnt help land a plane. Action does. Mis-directed and blind faith?

Anderson- I had to laugh out loud when you asked to see that mug shot again. That was scary!

President Obama handled the situation as he's done, every situation since the primaries, very meticulous, taking into account all sides and making the captain safety his top priority. I'm thrilled it turned out great, because if the Seals had missed their mark, the President would have been bashed non stop.
I think, PO should talk to the ship owners and convince them they need to hire protection for their vessels. In the meantime, I think he should send out the navy to begin attacking any pirates roaming the waters for at least three months I'm sure once the word gets out that the pirates are being killed, they'll think about a new way of life.

What is it with people! How many time do we have to witness someone playing with large dangerous animals before everyone gets it! Safer places to play, I'm sure.

I am glad that he could land the plane safely. What a good news. Fortunately that he at least had some training to fly a plane.

Isabel, I agree that in a hostage situation the focus is on the safety and safe release, freeing, the person who is held hostage. We can't solve all the world's problems when dealing with a kidnapping. Avoiding violence though is I'm sure something almost everyone involved wants, even maybe especially the Navy Seals. Use of force is I believe always a last resort, even for the the military.

Good evening everyone! Nice mix of news& views tonight. Except for the crazy zoo story. It's not like swimming with the dolphins, lady!!! She's lucky she got out alive and that bear is lucky he doesn't need Lipitor! He probably only thought she was a special seal swimming his way.

Amazing story regarding the passenger/pilot. I don't know that I've ever heard anyone so collected during such an extremely distressing situation. Hope he can find the air traffic controllers to give them a proper "thank you."

    Hello all,

I am so proud of our military and the superb job of the navy seals, way to go..as for pres Obama he did excellent I give him an A, he stayed cool, calm and collected and didnt allow himself to bluster and raise the situation and give any reason for the pirates to be elevated, but he gave standing orders to use force if necessary that is true leadership..

Anyone remember this line from the movie Airplane?

"Striker, listen, and you listen close: flying a plane is no different than riding a bicycle, just a lot harder to put baseball cards in the spokes."

    What a great story.

It is a common nightmare of many people – being in a plane when the pilot dies – or simply disappears: Then what do you do? This man lived that nihtmarfe, proved he coud get the better of it, saved his family and amazed everybody! Bravo.

Incredible story about the pilot. "Focused fear", how better to describe his emotion. Hats off!

I have known my friend since preschool and I just cannot imagine her mother wanting to kill me?!?! It just seems like it is impossible.

I have a feeling this story is going to get even weirder. I wonder if she is the sole perpetrator.

I believe President Obama handled the Pirate situation with flying colors- Ignoring the press and keeping the drama out of it but doing the work behind the scenes was a crucial choice to make- and calling the American Commander himself to take responsibility for the decision was also impressive. This is the way a real leader handles things.

Of course the congratulations go to the Navy Seals for true courage and doing what they do so well.

The Navy did not shoot first , they tried to negotiate with those pirates , but when they threatened Captain Phillips life they had to act. The US showed how to deal with pirates and it is not to pay the ransom , but to give you a chance to back off and if you don't or threaten the lives of Americans, you are taken out. We had no choice and I for one have no sympathy for those pirates.

    April 13, 2009 at 10:35 pm |
  42. Mike Syracuse, NY

@jacqueline, the real options were actually very limited. There's no way we could pay ransom and let them go, so that meant a rescue operation. There's no way to run a rescue from half a world away, so the on-scene commander had to do it. What 'decsion' had to be made? In fact, the authorization of force was probably not even needed, as the Navy has the authority to protect American lives anyway.

Scary...but amazing that he was able to land that plane and save his wife and his girls...Focused fear is a great way to put it...I can't imagine what was going through his mind when he was trying to land the plane.

Thank goodness Doug White was a pilot. Can you imagine if there wasn't a pilot of board! Another hero! God bless him!
