The sixth attack this week? what the...? How come we havent reported these attacks yet? What made this attack so controversial?
Why don't the crews on ships in these waters arm themselves?
I thought that most of the pirate attacks were motivated over the value of the cargo aboard the ship - this ship had nothing of value (other than the crew, of course) on board.
@Jennifer I think they said earlier that sunrise for them was in about an hour.
Thes pirate attacks is really so unbelievable in this day and age.
That’s just so sad to hear that these Americans are being hostages by these pirates.

With all of those attacks out there lately I wonder why these ships aren't armed to protect themselves in some way. They should have some sort of security.
Bravo to the crew for kicking butt. The US Navy WILL act. This is a US falg vessel, so we have to act.
Good point Minou – I read an article recently that included insight from a Somali pirate, he specifically cited government disorganization and failure as their main motivation
First we have F-16's chasing Cessnas and now missile destroyers chasing lifeboats. Uncharted waters indeed that we are living in.

Pirates seeing that Naval ship should have thrown a white flag out. This could take days! Americans do not have patience so we will see.

I think that any ships planning to go through that part of the world needs a security force on board. I don't understand why they have no defensive force already! Is there some maritime law that prohibits the carrying of arms by merchant ships?

Somalia is among the poorest countries of Africa, it is bizarre that happens with an American vessel.

This pirate situation is terribly sad. Interesting what Mr. Cooper just said about this being the first incident of American involvement.
In the movies I always root for the pirates, but IRL I'm for the merchant ship, and of course, the Navy. I hope everything works out smoothly! From what I've heard the pirates don't really have any other choice, they just have that lifeboat and it's not going to get very far.

I don't see how this pirate problem can be solved. These ppl need food and money and their government is a shambles. not to excuse their pirating, but they are desperate, and desperate people take desperate measures.
I is a surprise to hear, and not just a little alarming, to learn tha merchant vessels in this corridor are not only not armed, but not HEAVILY armed! What ar ethese people thinking?

The pirate story is both alarming and challenging!
Am very glad the crew won and took back the ship, BUT, am worried about the captured Captain.
However, once the US Navy comes in, i bet ya things will get staightened out pretty quick!

The chaotic state of Somalia and the lack of a central government, together with the location of the country in northeast Africa, created the conditions for the growth of piracy in the region.
