Social and economic gaps between whites and blacks persist in the United States despite an atmosphere that led to the election of President Obama, an Urban League report said.

Despite hope ushered in by President Obama's election, racial divides persist, a report says.

Blacks remain twice as likely to be unemployed, three times more likely to live in poverty and more than six times as likely to be imprisoned compared with whites, according to the group's annual State of Black America report issued Wednesday.

The report urges Obama to tackle the critical challenges of the times, including unemployment, home foreclosures, education and an overhaul of health care.

"As the Obama administration ushers in a new era of hope, change, and to some extent, unity for this nation, many are asking whether racial barriers have now been erased in America," the report said. "Are discrimination, division and inequality antiquated relics of the past? For a quick answer to that question, one has but to review some of the sobering statistics."

The Urban League's equality index shows the status of blacks at 71 percent that of whites. It said that economics "remains the area with the greatest degree of inequality," with social justice, health and education following.

Everyone always focuses on the racism towards the african americans, why doesn't anyone see that there is racism towards white individuals from the other races.

It's clear that the Republicans want President Obama to Fail, because they didn't come up with a plan when Bush1 and Bush 2 were in officeto get us out of this mess. The Republicans got us in this mess and how quickly they are trying to forget that small fact. Have the Republicans forgot that the war you got us into cost 10 Billion dollars a month, and a lot of that money can't be accounted for?

Even though the President has won the hearts of most of America there are still those who are working against him. I stumbbled on to a documentary called the "Obama Deception" and I was outraged. Why are those people doing this and where are they getting the support? Is any of this true?
It was scary to watch because America has such faith in the President.

Can you guys in CNN find out exactly whats going on with this documentary because I am completely baffled.

Of course, those who refuse to acknowledge the truth will continue to wallow in their ignorance.

Sadly, racism is alive and well in the good old USA.

How do those statistics compare for Hispanics, Asians, African Americans who have emigrated here in the past 20 years from Europe and Africa, and Native Americans?

I don't really think they are unemployed and in jail because they are black. It's the choices people make in life. The opportunity is there for anyone who WANTS to make something of themselves, no matter what color. It isn't always about an education it's about working hard to get ahead and not everyone wants to do that. Race is used as an excuse way too often.
