David Gergen - thanks for blogging with us tonight. The charity donation issue is a real concern for many - often hitting those who need it the most.

Andy, thanks for your honest opinions about the Obama administration and the gloomy picture they are painting. He is making people feel more desperate and depressed. I won't want to wait 12 hours to hear him speak and be a brown-noser. These people have more important jobs to do.

I'm glad we have someone of your caliber who speaks his mind and adds some humor the the gloomy picture they depict everyday.

Thanks for your comments. Keep them coming.

Are we seriously discussing Michelle Obama's ARMS and dresses? How about focusing on her achievements and the job she's doing? I don't see us discussing Pres Obama's ties!

I am sorry, I believe that we should not focus on whether the Obamas is going to get a dog or not. I would like to know more about what is going in the country.

@lynn, defense spending generates more jobs per dollar than almost anything else. It can also ramp up faster, getting more money into the enonomy faster. Besides, if there's one thing that IS the federal government's job, it's defend the country from our enemies. I forgot one: #5 deport every illegal alien in the country. It would free up millions of jobs that may not be high paying, but pay more than unemployment.

Yes, I noticed Michelle's attire, but can't say I gave it as much thought as apparently everyone else did. Although first thing I thought was that she obviously worked out.

@David Gergen: You bring up a great point about reducing tax deductions to charities by wealthy people. Seems like a double edge sword. We should be encouraging people to support charities, not discourage them!

This is just outrageous! Building F-22's that the Pentagon says it doesn't need. We heard gates say that. This is stupid spending from the same congress that already is spending 685 million for a nuclear submarine that the pentagon says it doesn't want and can't use. But, the fact that it is being built in Joe Lieberman's state, I guess we are going to waste that money also. When you have a budget with over six thousand earmarks in it, I have lost all faith in our congress to lead us out of this recession. Pres. Obama please, please stop this madness.

@Stacy- I could not agree with you more at least the money President Obama is spending is on the American people. Among many things that infuriates me about the Iraq war is that billions were spent and after 7 1/2 years there is nothing to show for it. The money Mr. Obama is spending will me on an investment in our future.

@David Gergen...I live in the land of non-profits. (I had to go out and buy a tux after I moved here, where we wear short year round). I have already seen a collective significant impact on our Chambers of Commerce (8 of them) throughout the valley, BUT I haven't seen (or heard of) a downturn in non-profit cauyses. I DO expect to hear some serious deficit stories as we get further into the year, however.

Michelle Obama is fit and she looks great (and normal, like other Americans–not on a pedastol [sp?]). She's really appealing and attractive.

    RE: F-22
Skip the F-22 stick with building more to win the Afghan war and establish peace in the region. If tension builds up with another "air power" the US can ramp up. Just in time manufacturing has come along way and the designs will be more suitible to the need. The f-22 may become obsolete before it's ever needed in LARGER numbers. Improve body armour, develop safer personnel carriers and other equipment to help soldiers NOW!

Defense spending? There you have it, the other reason this country is in a recession. Millions of dollars that should that 's for what if and when.
I hope this gets cut to! We need to spread the dollars wisely. Duh!

How do you know that the congressmen who waited hours for aisle seats weren't doing work via blackberry or laptop? Give them a break – they were there to witness history – glad to know they still care! I waited hours in freezing weather to witness Obama's inauguration and my "seat" was blocks away! It was well worth it!

On the issue of the obsolete fighter jet's future, I urgently advocate that we transfer those jobs to retrofit our environment for a sustainable future. Even if we gave all the workers severance pay for two years it wouldn't be as expensive as maintaining the program.

The Republican Party is always complaiing about the stimulus plan , President Barack obama is trying to get pass congress to help the econmy crisis.
Why is the republicans complaning? If they knew so much , why they didn’t fix the prolem before President Obama came in Office.

Well I was in the Army, and as much as i would like to see us have the latest Fighter Jets, we just can't afford it right now.

Besides we have more than enough firepower to win any war as it is.

No country is going to attack us. Not China. Not Russia. Those are the only countries that have any measure of military prowess to challenge us. We would win against either of them, but I wouldn't be sure what would be left of us.

So sorry to say, but I say either kill the program or get other countries to invest so we are not paying 100% of the cost.

scary to think that members of congress are either in awe of the president or desperate to get some camera time that they would wait so long for a prime seat. how about thinking of the president as someone you should be working with instead getting his autograph or photo? naive me never realized congress members camped out to attend these speeches!

To comment on Are the Republicans in any position to criticize President Obama on the recovery bill.
the Gop and fiscal responsibility my answer is do elephants fly? One example is their track record in the past and the lack of coming up with a solution to the current state of affairs with the country during the Bush years , they saw it coming and as they have been acting now did nothing , On the I like to say the (recovery bill )and the pork they say is in it, the one thing that I can see is that the earmarks in it do create jobs and put money out there to be spent here in the United States ,
What is the problem with that? One last comment even if Republicans are upset with some of spending with the bill they had a least one month or more to go through it, most people need to know that because the funding has been included in this bill aka stimulus at this time most of those issues and programs would be on the the congress and senate floors and would have to go through the long process to be approved and are needed now and so the congress can spend their time now on moving forward on more pressing matters now ! overall I believe that the recovery bill does put money out there that will help jump start the nation after all I see it as every time you spend a buck in the United States you are putting back into the economy and helping it thrive and when are the republicans going to take responsibility other than bicker.

In the examination of the costs related to the F22, you said that health care provided more jobs and a higher return. How can Congress then say that improved health care isn't needed right now? If you get more bang for the buck, then spend on a better producer!

President Obama seems to be on a clear mission, he will tackle all the problems at the same time, if he has to raise taxes for the rich to 80% and take away all their deductions, so be it.

If the President wants to save money he could scrap the Hummer. The Army keeps adding armor and electronics until there is very little space on the inside and they still fail on the battelfield. The new M-Wraps and vehicles along that generation may be more expensive but they are better in the field and will save more lives which will save a ton of tax payer dollars and the lose of American lifes will be lower. The Hummer is great to drive around on bases but I doubt I would want to go outside the wire in one. I have been a medic in three very long tours in Iraq so I have seen plenty. I would say scrap the hummer and move on to something better.

"A confirmation message..." Kim was singing a great song off the cuff like that

Man thank God things are going well in North Dakota, good strong economy. If the iron workers are busy, they're building and doing well up there. If they had a lot of auto industry jobs it might be different.

It's nice when the First Lady bears her arms. If I can say so.

Well i think that's crazy since Al Qaeda doesn't even have these fighter jets F-22 so what's the whole point of this at the moment. I think that the money can be spent some other way.
