Jack Gray
AC360 Producer/Writer

Good evening and welcome to the AC360 Academy Awards Live Blog. The winners, the losers, Jack Nicholson’s sunglasses…we’ve got your running commentary.  And sure, considering all that’s going on in the world, the Oscars aren’t hugely important.  But if you’re looking to get away from the bleak news-of-the-day for a few hours, then this blog is the place for you.

We should also point out that we’re not encouraging you to change the channel from CNN, but if you’re going to watch the Oscars anyway, you might as well watch them with us.

And even if you’re not watching them, because of your feud with Kate Winslet or whatever, we think you’ll still enjoy the live blog. I’ll be with you from 8:00pm Eastern Time until the Oscars finish airing here in New York.

If you would like to participate in our Live Blog (and we hope you do) please follow our rules.

Here are some of them:

1) Please keep your comments short
2) Don’t write in ALL CAPS (we don’t like screaming)
3) Use your real name

Please note that due to volume we may not be able to post all comments.

Best Comment of the Night so far goes to Dulcie:
"Wow! Amy Adam! She’s my banker’s sister!"

    I love it.

This is very cool how they are presenting! Much more personal and tears are flowing before any awards are even given out in the first row

"It's not easy being a nun" haha, oh funny

Where does Nicholson get those sunglasses? He must have Kim Il-Jong's personal assistant make them.

    Thanks for the info Cooper.

Anderson – glad you illuminated us. I noticed they were much closer to the stage. Guess that means longer speeches. Heh.

Whoopi in a gown? Sweet! What a great bunch of gals on that stage.

"It's not easy being a NUN" LOL. Shout out from Whoopi for Sister Act. She was great in that film. Not feeling the dress, but Whoopi is just Whoopi.

  19. Dulcie - Denver

Wow! Amy Adam! She's my banker's sister!

So, the new format this year is ex-winners will announce the nominees and the 'representative star" will steps forward to announce the winner ... interesting format.

Anderson, In my opinion, "The Reader" is a fantasic movie, but I tend to like haunting and intense films. I hope you get the chance to see it.

  25. Jack Gray

@Vanessa: yup, I saw Slumdog. It was excellent. I've seen all the Best PIcture contenders, the most recent one being Benjamin Button - I saw that yesterday. I'l save my pick for later in the blog. Whoopi Goldberg stole her dress print from my bathrobe.

    February 22, 2009 at 8:45 pm |
  26. Mindy

Robert Downey Jr. looks really bored.

    February 22, 2009 at 8:45 pm |
  27. Polly, OH

Anderson– great tastes! I made it a goal to see all the Oscar films this year, and without a doubt Slumdog Millionaire and Milk were the best.
A part of me hopes this years production isn't TOO painful for former host Jon Stewart to stomach. But if Wolverine is going to sing and dance... that's near impossible to beat!

    February 22, 2009 at 8:45 pm |
  28. Ashley - Hamlin, NY

What is up with people and the Godfather? Some great lines, but it's like every guy I talk to they constantly say things like:

"Leave the gun, take the cannoli" and "take it to the mattresses" and "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse."

I don't understand what the fascination is...

    February 22, 2009 at 8:44 pm |
  31. Dulcie - Denver

Ack! What kind of dress is that? Holy geez – I don't even know what to say about it... Hideous?

    February 22, 2009 at 8:44 pm |
  32. andersoncnn

if you noticed, they've changed the front part of the kodak theater, so that the people on the stage are much closer to the ground, so it feels much more intimate. And im told all the nominees are seated much closer to the front than normal so there is less time spent with people walking to the stage.

    February 22, 2009 at 8:44 pm |
  33. Esma

@Shillie-I concur. I hate to, but I do.

Like Barbara Walters said in her special, Hugh Jackman is the kind of all-around star: actor, singer, dancer that seems rare these days.

That's neat. I admit to not knowing much about him at all. He is quite handsome and I love the accent.

    February 22, 2009 at 8:43 pm |
  42. Molly

I don't think anyone is cooler than Jack Nicholson

    February 22, 2009 at 8:42 pm |

Anderson, Can you give us a hint about your "60 Minutes" piece?

    February 22, 2009 at 8:41 pm |

Someone screaming Open in the background. I guess this is what you get with a LIVE show. LOL

I've often suspect Meryl Streep was on steroids.

    February 22, 2009 at 8:41 pm |

@EJ – Hosts I've seen weren't anywhere near as brave.
