I blame society

[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/HEALTH/02/05/birdflu.virus/art.chickens.gi.jpg caption="Human-to-human transmission of avian flu is rare, but in some cases, the virus has passed from poultry to humans. There's a good chance Jack has confused bird flu with the common cold."]

Jack Gray
AC360° Associate Producer

There is nothing worse than a drama queen.  A thought that came to me as I lay in bed this morning clinging to life.  You see, I am suffering from bird flu.  All the signs are there.  Headache, sore throat, runny nose.  Definitely bird flu.

Have no fear, though, I am getting medical treatment.  In fact, I did what anyone with nasal congestion should do:  I called my doctor at 3am.  Unfortunately, there must have been a problem with the phone line because as soon as I said, “Hi Doc, I’ve been coughing all night, I’ll need you to phone me in a prescription for twenty-five Vicodin,” I heard a dial tone.

So, today, I experience that grandest of American traditions:  the sick day.  The concept being that, by staying home, I will recuperate faster and my co-workers will be spared from catching what I have…in this case, bird flu.

But, as we all know, no one at work ever believes you’re sick.  You could be at home in an iron lung and your colleagues would still be walking around the office saying, “Did you hear about Jack?  Yeah, he took a (makes quote marks with their hands) sick day.”

And the thing about being sick in New York is no one cares.  Seriously.  No one.  Not my mailman.  Not Susan Sarandon.  Definitely not my dog.  I got a text message from her that read “If you say you’re sick as a dog one more time I will end you.”

Naturally, I find this lack of humanity entirely unacceptable.  As I wobble over to CVS to pick up whatever generic brand over-the-counter horse tranquilizers are on sale I am appalled to see my fellow New Yorkers going about their daily lives as if my suffering hasn’t affected them at all.  I look them in the eyes, ready to accept their unsolicited offers of Kleenex and Bouillabaisse.  But they just walk by, rushing with the unmistakable urgency of people who are late for yoga.

I consider my other options.  I live near one of the world’s most famous supermodels.  Surely she will be sympathetic and nurse me back to health.  Especially when I tell her that my plane just went down in the Hudson.

“Maybe it’s the bird flu talking,” I will say as she spoon-feeds me Robitussin, “but I think the time has come for us to have octuplets.”

But before I do anything, I call my sister, Rose.  She tells me to stop complaining and to be grateful I even have a job in this economic downturn.  Let alone a job that will pay me when I’m sick.  Something about millions of Americans who have recently been laid off and millions more who don’t have health insurance.

I try to explain to her that they are the ones who should be grateful.  Grateful they don’t have bird flu.

But she stands her ground, arguing that that we must not lose perspective on how dire the financial and employment situation has become all across America.

What can I say?  That’s my sister for you.  Completely missing the point about my bird flu.

Oh by the way BettyAnn from TX, thanks for the dog advice last night...it's good to know he's not as strange and gross as I thought. And now with bird flu going around I have to be even more careful with him and his bad habits.

    Hi Jack
I hear you are sick with the flu. Call a few friends and have them to make you some homemade chicken noodle soup. I will give you the recipe: boil one half pan of water in a medium pot, add 4-5 pieces of chicken, (cover pot and allow this to cook until chicken is tender). add 1-2 cups of water, 1 medium onion sliced, 2 cloves of garlic, 2 carrots sliced, 1 sliced potato and 3 chicken bouilion cubes. Allow soup to simmer until vegetables are tender. Soon you will be feeling great and back to work in no time.

    Good evening Jack,
Sorry to hear you're not well, I can't believe that Sammy hasn't put her nurse's outfit on and done her Florence Nightingale bit in your hour of need. Hope she remembers that when she wonders why you're not spotting her a twenty at the weekend for menthols and wine boxes..
I always work on the old proverb 'Feed a cold, starve a fever'. Funny, I've never had a fever.. If you're still poorly come the weekend, I'll pop over to bake you a cake & rub some Vicks on your chest.
Maybe Anderson had someone in a lab coat spray his office with the bird flu virus to teach you a lesson – no-one messes with the Cooperman, baby! You should get Dr Sanjay out to give you the once over – does he do house calls these days??
Anyway, it's nearly my bedtime here, so you stay warm under that duvet honey, get some rest and drink plenty of fluids. And by that I didn't mean Sammy's left over wine!
Lots of love from your number one English groupie! xxxxxxxx

Feel your pain. Been fighting the same jungle rot myself for over a week now. The meds my family doc always give me when I get this do not work, so I finally decided to call for an appointment with an ENT specialist. I see him tomorrow afternoon. Hoping for a shot and superantihistamines. Unlike you with the cushy AC360 gig, I teach school and haven't taken a day off while I've been under the weather. I've always been too much of a workaholic to realize the downtime might be good for me. Usually if I take a day off I guilt about it until I get back to my job. Yeah, twelve step groups didn't do crap for me there.

Hope you feel better. The chicken soup really is a great comfort food, though, with this thing. So is hot apple cider. Of course today I've realized my Coke Icee and Little Debbie Swiss Cake Rolls have made me feel just as good as that soup. I recommend the sugar rush instead. More fun.

Poor Jack – I'm so sorry you are sick. I might be able to get traffic to stop down here for a minute or two (just enough to get a good snarl started) in honor of you on your sick day. I mean, they stop for everything else – including birds pee'ing on the road – so I would think they would be happy to give you some traffic congestion in your honor.

Bird flu – sniffles, congestion, etc. The one true sign of bird flu though is feathers – have you grown any yet? Or sneezed any yet? I knew a guy that had bird flu so bad after a bad bout of sneezing we had to get a backhoe to get all the feathers out and find him again. I hope you aren't that bad. Get well soon and try not to be too miserable on your sick day. You're lucky you have Sammie to "nurse" you back to health.

Well, you are lucky, Jack, to be working, especially for AC360. When I’m sick, I still come in to work unless I’m dying. And when I do this, I regret it because they send me home anyway. And no, you don’t have bird flu. LOL. Glad to see your sense of humor is still intact even when sick. I wish I can give you chicken soup, but I’m thousands of miles away. Believe me, if I can e-mail it, I’ll do it. LOL. Get lots of rest, drink plenty of liquids. Get well soon. Take care,

I live in california and am a home owner. I am living within my means ensuring that I will keep the roof over my head. I WANT A BREAK! I have known of people sitting on the home for over a year not making a payment and then the finance companies nagationate an ageement and forgive the balance. They get a chance to start over and keep the items they have purchased when they pulled out the equity in their homes. I DESERVE A BREAK/REWARD FOR MAKING MY PAYMENT!

AWW..Jack, it's good to know that even when you "sick" 🙁 you still have the ability to communicate w/ us. I think that bird flu is from all the twitter-ing you were making us do. See, that's what you get when you have too much on your plate. I told you, one "lonely people website" at a time 🙂
In honor of Jack Gray taking a "sick day" I, too, declare that I will be taking a sick day myself tomorrow (& maybe the next day, payday you know 😉
My excuse " I can't come in to work, I got to have breakfast w/ someone with the bird flu.";)
I mean maybe your sister's right, the times are tough and we should be happy we have a job, yada, yada, yada or something or other. I believe that taking care of our beloved Jack will help stimulate the economy, right?
I'm glad I'm doing my part to help stimulate the economy 😉

Get well, Jack...and don't worry Anderson's shoes will be there to shine when your feeling ALL BETTER!

About this current blog I have to confess that everything we suffer from ;health issues (flus etc),economic down turn and wars have been created directly and indirectly by humanity and as humans we have to accept that and learn from it.

Wow that sounds like you have the real bad bird flu....please wear a mask around the house so that Sammy wont catch it...but then again she may be ok since she has her daily cocktail and smokes....I was thinking that maybe Sammy is upset that you are "as sick as a dog" cause she has to re-route her plans for this evening after the dog show in which she has 100's of guests coming over all that r.s.v.p....and she is making tons of phone calls to let them all know the change of plans thats a lot of work for her in one day.....well Jack soup broth...ginger ale...dry toast....and plenty of rest...hope you feel better soon....

    Hilarious

What an apt way to describe the basic American right to self involved feelings while sick. I loved the comment about calling your doctor, my father in law is as doctor and has fielded more of these calls than he would like, though they do make hilarious stories.

In Iowa we like to think of ourselves as kind and generous and that we offer lots of midwestern hospitality, so maybe if you get sick again you should come and visit!

Bless your sister for her no-nonsense attitiude, get well soon Jack!

    Hello Jack.
Sorry to hear that you're sick – hope you feel better soon. Nice warm chicken soup, rest, sleep, and wear comfy cozy clothes. Break out some good movies – perhaps the Star Wars Trilogy (Empire strikes back is the best one). It'll keep your mind off your illness. Then, you'll be back on your feet in no time! Get well soon. By the way, the shot was so funny with Dolly Parton. Good choice! Have a great day, talk to you later.

Hi Jack! Sorry you're not feeling well! I love your blogs; they always make me laugh. Everyone's right about the chicken soup. Call and ask someone to bring you some homemade; see what they say. If I lived in NY instead of CA I'd do it for you. If you could lie out here in the sun you'd get better fast! Are you bundling up well when you go out? It gets so cold in NY! Remember enough sleep, cut back on the stress, and talk with your friends! Here's a Valentines kiss and hug for you! XO

Jack, instead of saying you are "sick as a dog" , perhaps you should say "Flu, it’s for the birds" …..

I can never remember if you are supposed to starve a cold and feed a fever or if it's feed a cold and starve a fever….whatever….it's just so dang confusing so I always drink…yes, drink and drink and drink….flushes out the system….whether it comes in a box, corked bottle, or a 6-pack. It works! Trust me… 😉

BTW, are you sure it's Bird Flu you have? Have you eaten any peanut butter lately?

On behalf of your groupies, we wish you to get well soon!

    my question is this.
President Obama says the goverment is trying to help out the american people with this stimulace package, thats great but what about the people in the USA that already are forclosed on or about to be? and what about the people that are behind in their credit card payment now and are in collections? there is no help for us in this matter. but yet all the goverment is doing is putting more money into the economy so the banks can lend more money out, but for those of us who " CANT GET CREDIT NOW " there is no help for us, i mean come on, there are millions of us out there and no help what so ever, they need to think about us as well, dont they?

Someones a hypocondriac, and as a matter of fact i am one as well. I get heartburn and i think im dying:) I cough and i call in and go to the doctor the next day. Its ok to be careful about your health because afterall, you only get one body. Dont be such a worry wart. I take alprazolam to control anxiety i get from heart problems, so im not new to the whole "pill thing" i guess but keep in mind, pills are dangerous. Best of luck and next time have some warm milk and cookies:) count back from 10 and you'll feel better, i promise.

As far as your co-workers, no free alcohol next time you are stuck in Bates Motel somewhere in Florida after a hurricane has come in. Come on and admit it, you know you carry a flask just in case the lights go out!

    Hi, Jack!

    Are you OK?

    The influenza virus? Poor you!
    You work from home, today?

The Brazilian recipe for these days is: vitamin C and bed.

For co-workers, I have this feeling that nobody believes in my bad situation, unless the voice on the phone, is hoarse to the point of feeling sorry for me.

    A curiosity:
There are campaigns, in US for the flu vaccine?
    If yes, you took?

The composition of the vaccine is changed every year according to WHO recommendations. Worth it!

Unfortunately, I can not say: call, if you need anything. 😉

    You just need to rest.
My friend, I hope you feel better!

Jack, Dee from CT: you, too! I am also amongst the ranks of the sickly today.

And yesterday, and the day before, when the migraine struck. It keeps trying to come back. Something about missing the company of whatever else it is that I have. I keep telling it to forget about it, but it's insistent. It keeps reassuring me that I will like it when it returns. Having had one for about two months recently, I keep telling it no and then throw all the papers I have to grade at it.

Unfortunately for me, sick or not, I still have to work. I hate that part. I feel your pain, Dee. And send you lots of warm, illness-free thoughts, Jack. Here's to all of us getting well soon!

You may be sick but your funny bone still works! I am so sorry you are not felling well. Might I suggest CHICKEN soup?
Ha! You are so like Charlie Sheen with the exception that Rose is your sister.
Hey if you can't get the super model to spoon feed you and have your eight babies, I believe the Angelina look alike is available!
Take care of yourself and don't let Anderson make you polish his shoes until you are completely well. We SURELY don't want him catching your germs! 😉
As for Sammy, you just send her to the dog show with her bag of wine while you take your knock yourself out pills. Problem solved!
Seriously, get better Jack. We all love and care about you.
After all, you're our funny valentine!♥

    Oh Jack, you poor thing!

Now listen......go to Duane Reade and get yourself some Vicks VapoRub, then curl up with Sammy in your blue flannel pajama's with little red sailboats on them – you will surely feel better in no time. (Unless Sammy is still avoiding you. So much for "man;s best friend", huh?) Bird flu, Jack? Good Lord you are inventive. If you begin to sprout feathers, give us a holler. Heh.

You get a gold star for staying at home and not infecting the entire gang; but it has to be said that Anderson has been stuffed up for days – so now I suppose he expects you to be sick for him too? Yikes! He is quite the taskmaster.

New Yorkers are not as bad as you are making them out to be Jack. Rest assured...we care about you and want you to get better soon. Enjoy your "sick day" while you can. Watch trash TV, read, play video games, plot your revenge; whatever makes you happy. Just sleep it off. Drink some TheraFlu Warming Liquid – the stuff rocks!

Nice of you to post when you are sick. You are so devoted to us. Aw. Maybe if you feel better in a bit, give the Twitter a try. Thanks to Presley and Stacy I have mastered it. Thanks girls!

You should listen to your sister .... afterall she's the one with the clear head, & not on sick leave, right? I'm all for brothers listening to their sister(s).

BTW, did you know that there are different types of bird flu? The 'ornithological-kind' & the 'non-ornithological-kind'...... Are there feathers involved? ... (goose-down duvet anyone??) .... Spending a sick day in bed may not be all that safe.........

Awww, you poor boo-boo. I believe you, Jack. Get well soon, okay — and when you’re through faking it, get back to work! Just kidding! No, really, I believe you. Have some chicken noodle soup. Jack – I hope you feel better soon. I took a sick day yesterday – awful, horrific migraine ... maybe it's a tumor ... or could it be bird flu – I also had a runny nose and I was sneezing and couching, which made the entire migraine thing that much worse.

I'm back at work today – wishing I was home still – but call if you want, I can open up a can of chicken noodle soup as well as the next person and heat it on up for you ... I'll even make you a grilled cheese and tomato sandwich to go with it.

    Happy Day Jack,

Don’t worry, you will overcome the bird flu soon, but I noticed that men cannot tolerate the infection like women, may be women have more immunity to birds flu because they expose to chickens and ducks during cooking, it just a theory. I wish you get well soon.

By the way you can tell your sister Rose that Saint Valentine is supporting the global economy, at least on Feb. 14 each year. In this occasion, I wish to send dozen of red roses with kisses (copyrighted) to the matador Saint Valentine who defeated the red bulls in the name of love and reviving the economy; and if I get chance to meet Saint Valentine in heaven, I will thanks him for giving the red roses a meaning and the life a taste and supporting the economy, but I will confront him on cupid is blind and filing for retirement.

I wish you all happy Valentine Day.

(Personal note: I will be out of touch for the next 2-3 weeks (unfortunate not for vacation and SPA), but I promise to keep in touch whenever I have chance, till then take a good care of yourself and Anderson).

    Respectfully,
    Maria

I'm sorry you have the bird flu- a cool mist humidifier will be very helpful for your congestion, and have the added benefit of not giving you electro-shock therapy every time you turn on a light in your house. I bet Anderson will send you some chicken soup if you ask him to! Feel better.

So Jack..you have the bird flu huh!? UMM..are ya sure that you didn't catch the bug from a certain gray haired anchor!? I mean he has been sickly here lately! So stop blaming those dang birds and point the finger at your boss man...UMM Jack..not THAT finger! LOL Hey...you might get canned for that! LOL

So Sammy has left ya high and dry huh? She must be having one last hoorah with those show dogs getting them totally wasted before they all hit the road. But hey at least she cared enough to text ya. Even if it was just to fuss you out. You hurt her feelings Jack...say you're sorry. Being a dogs not sick! You better make it up to her or she may come home wasted and chew up those new fancy dancey running shoes that you tromp around New York in. Or better yet ...use the bathroom in them. LOL

Don't worry Jack.....if no one else will care for you then you can always go down to the gentlemen's club that you frequent. I'm sure they'll take ya right in and shower you with love...UMM..OK for a few bucks but hey...at least they show you attention. LOL

Hope that you feel better soon Jack! Get back in bed and rest! And if you don't get better in a week or so go to the doc man!!

I reckon being ill as one of the great pleasures of life, provided one is not too ill and is not obliged to work till one is better.

    Aw, get better Jack.
I'm sure Sammy will enjoy having you home all day.
Hot and Sour soup always makes me feel better when I have the Bird Flu.

Your symptoms show that it's definitely not the bird flu, trust me on that ;') not sure if the twitter bird bit you though, but then you would end up with the twitflu... and I must say its a big NO to accepting kleenex or fish soup (sounds !!!) from random strangers.

Bless your sister, she's right :), hope you get well soon.
