Okay, yes...I agree, everyone agree the President is a gifted speaker, should not even be compared to Bush (they are not in the same debate league).....but the election is OVER. Stop with the "i inherited it". Congress spends the money. Bush was dealing with a WAR...every Pres spent BIG during the WAR years....remember WAR ON TERROR...remember 9/11...that is why spending was big....also remember the biggest growth and ROI up to basically Sept 2008....WHICH I would say it was clear we knew by then who would be the President. Is this coincidental??

we are going to be in more debt because bank crisis and as a result the money given to the banks right? well news flash if we had govt oversight with the previous adminstration and the all republican congress we've had then, we wouldn't have been in the miss to begin with. would we?

to me its like the republicans are still in the election. all this Bitterness
get over it americans are hurting

Dear Lord! It is really bad if someone has to go to war to make ends meet. That is Bush's stimulus pkg.

Why do most of the republican reps seem to be much older with old time thoughts. I think we have a new President with new ideas and new ways of doing business and alot of the older reps and people are not wanting to move into the new thought process. Not bashing older people, as I am one, however, I do know you best be ready to think differently and think new or you are going to be gone fast! I think that counts for the job force too.

President Obama was in the Senate for the past four years. I don’t believe he should be given a “pass” on saying he inherited the economic problems from President Bush. I believe the main government source of our current economic problems lies with Congress. If I remember my civics, the President proposes the budget, Congress enacts the budget and if vetoed by the President, Congress can override the President’s veto. Congress must like budget deficits, because they could balance the budget if they didn’t. The way I see it, Congress is much more responsible for our problems than the President regardless of which party the President is affiliated with.

Perhaps President Obama should have been putting all his solutions for our country’s problems to work in the Senate the past two years instead of not showing up for work at the job he was hired to do and accepted. . If President Obama would have put as much effort into his Senate job as he did campaigning for a new job, we might not be in the economic predicament we are now in.

How many Americans could not show up for work like Senators Obama, McCain, Clinton Biden and Dodd did while campaigning and still keep their jobs? The best part for these model employees of ours was we even paid them handsomely while not showing up for work. What a country!

Something strikes me that the media speaks little of except this morning on CNN interview with the mayor of East Lansing MI. Big coporations STOP OUTSOURCING JOBS TO FOREIGN COUNTRIES. The CEO'S and COO'S have abandoned their own back yards. They whined to Congress and became fatter in their pockets. Where did it get themselves and the US today? Another good example The Hershey Plant. Look up the jobs lost and where our chocolate will be come from!!! Now watch what happens to those towns that surround Hersheys plants. Whose next.

President Obama already said the plan isn't perfect. This means that not all parts of it will work, but at least it's better than nothing. Don't block the one thing that could work. No one is saying it will work 100%. We just need something to work. Something is better than nothing....

    February 9, 2009 at 10:49 pm |
  8. Bea

This plan will work because people believe in Obama.for whatever reasons. They will start spending because they think there is an adult in charge now. Sounds odd, but that is what is going to happen,. It's the confidence thing Ali V. mentioned. 7% unemployment means 93% are not and of that 93% there are folks with money to spend.

Leslie, what do you suggest the govt/president do with the problem we're in? The top economists in our country from conservative, liberal, rep. and dem all agree the stimulus plan is the only option we have to save the country.

If he asks for input then lets Pelosi ignore them, how is that bipartisan?

The only "input" the Republicans seem to offer up are tax cuts–don't they have any other ideas?

I agree stimulus is needed. I don't understand how spending millions at the Smithsonian, millions for furniture, millions for new cars for federal employees, millions for smoking cessation ( new smokers are needed to fund SCHIPS) is going to help the US economy. So much of the pork isn't even mentioned. If the economic plan is sooo good why does it have to be sold to the public.

As a person who has spent 20 years working with the unemployed, I think Pres Obama is correct. We need to get people working. Employment is better psychologically and fiscally for our citizens and our nation.

Leslie... if not the government putting money into the economy... then who? The American public is already tapped out. The private sector has already proven it's thinking of itself, with massive layoffs in the past month alone, forget the job losses last year. Angel investors ("anonymous" people who put the money they have into things) aren't typically seen as saving large-scale projects. Who else but the government?

Gergen...You're too gracious to us, Sir! Why wouldn't we come to the best political team on television? And we thank you for the comments and love as well. Pres. Obama is talking to the American people like we are in charge. It's as though he's working for us. We haven't seen a President like this in too long....by the way, did you guys play "Chariots of Fire" when King was reunited with the magic map?

they need to retool RV plants in Elkhart, Indiana. No one can afford RVs with gas prices going up and down the way they are. I had a nice motorhome and sold it when gas was $4 a gallon. RV makers are fantastic designers. Why don't those people make affordable pod or modular style homes? It's win-win. An affordable home for people who are undergoing foreclosure.

Congrats to President Obama Though, my only concern is why he or congress don't push the issue on the first part of the Stimulus money that went out when G.B was president? Can the monies get recovered by those who misused the funds? Can anything be done? I believe it will help... then recycle the money back into the economy or let it pay off some of the dept.

Who am I to say anything I'm just a tax payer..... Someone school me on this please....

I'd like to know how fast "tax cuts" would work. We have to face it that NOTHING is going to be fast enough. You cannot change that. It doesn't mean nothing should be done.

The Republicans remind me of Nero – they are all fiddling while the country burns. It's time you all moved up here north of the 48th. Our banks are the strongest in the world ( ask Ali who is canadian ) and we all have FREE health care!!!!!!

I keep hearing that this spending bill will not help our country and if that's true. Then how will a tax cut help me if I don't have a income to tax?

Obama should have never let the house democrats write the original Bill. His team should have done it. The bill isnt big enough. Republicans are weeners they just admitted that they took somethings out of the bill that would provide economic stimulus. They just got caught again with a memo to bust the unions again. The Gop leader is delusional to call government work just work and not jobs, either one gets you a paycheck. Everyday some business shuts down in my town. Tourists are well below the level that were used to because no one has money. The tax cuts wont even be felt until early next year, not that they did alot of good this year. The problem Obama has is that he still is not explaining how this bill will actually work. He only states what the outcome might, or hopes it will do

Regarding the stimulus package, if it's being spent, why not divide up the stimulus to all legal U.S. citizens (man, woman & child), regardless of income or age, comes to about $133,000 each? Ground up stimulation of the economy by the people who then invest in businesses, education, charities, real estate, the stock market, pay off loans, buy goods and services, etc. Real money, by the people, for the people. We live in a declining valued home in Florida, with reduced 401K values, with soon family unemployment and children trying to stay in college. We’re all willing to work and invest!

I was at the Elkhart Town Hall Meeting today, My biggest concern is that when the gas prices went up. no one could afford to take trips, Buy cars, and RV,S. The price is now down, but I feel if we could now afford to buy a auto or a RV, what is keeping the oil companies from going back to $5.00 again, and start this cycle all over again. What are your thoughts, Thank You, Max

Excuse me. Inspite of war expenses, America was workilng until the Democratic Congress took control in 2006. It is the hosing crisis that has caused the spiral downturn in the economy, because the Congress forced banks to give loans to people who couldn't afford them., and they refused to put regulations on the loans. Now this same Congress has all the answeres? Are you kidding me?

People you do not have to wait till the next election to get rid of those republicans that are standing in the way of you getting the help you know you need, just like the Governor of California got booted out of office by the people you have the same right to get rid of those do nothing Republicans who want you and your families to fall completely apart.

Put together a referendum and kick them out of office and have a special election for someone you is there to help the people not just the rich!

Interesting article in our paper today. Our esteemed state legislators have not only continued taking yearly raises as they cut programs and institute furloughs and hiring freezes, but they are all eligible for medical benefits equal to a full time public employee for working 45 days per year. The real "kicker" they are eligible for these benefits for life! Bet the regular employees being laid off would love that kind of a safety net for their families!

I believe they can "measure" the number of jobs saved by considering the planned lay offs that each local government units were projecting this year but will be deferred due to the subsidy from this stimulus bill! Anderson can easily glean data from all government units that has already considered this plan and feature that in future AC360 episodes.

Where were the Republicans in the last eight years with all the plans they are putting out now? They allowed Bush to control them and Bush did as he pleased. They did not fight Bush on any bad ideas and they praised him for those bad ideas that brought the country down.

Why shouldn't the government spend tax money on the tax payers that paid the taxes in the first place. But when the government sent money overseas to people who did not pay into it, Americans do not cry about too much spending. Americans only cry when the government spend money on Americans.

I’m sorry but is President Obama asking me and many other hardworking Americans to take up “Construction” as our job of choice…… Forget what we did in the jobs we have lost…Reeducate ourselves….we are on unemployment so reeducate ourselves …. in what laying asphalt & drywall…. Yeah its a job but by the time me and others are trained in them i maybe homeless. and many others… I more than likely cannot afford the student loan for the training…… I hope the American people are really reading inbetween the lines….. Many of us cannot afford wait …..

I strongly believe the time it takes for this so called magic stimulus cure to take affect the economy will balance itself out…….

Please remember out there that there is nothing to fear but fear itself....

If there was ever a time when where the money for something is going to come from was a moot point it's now. It is a secondary concern when the government needs to prevent the economy from going into shock. Keynes said that during times of crisis the government needs to put people to work digging holes and filling them back up. And Obama's take: the government needs to plug the hole that the private sector is unable to fill right now before it gets too big to plug.

So if the Republican panelist's keep reminding us that no Democrats voted for any of Bush's (or Reagan's) bills - are they accepting full responsibility for the last 8 years and "Reaganomics" as George HW Bush called Reagan's economic policies?

OMG!!!! What is it with bad talking republicans or democrats. REALIZE them for what they are....OUR EMPLOYEES. They should be fired plain and simple. TO keep the Congress almost all intact with a 9% approval rate was ludicrous. People went to the voting booth and voted straight ticket with their emotions over Obama. Now we are stuck with the same piss poor group that got us in this mess. They need to listen to us and we need to start THINKING instead of feeling. Obama did not say anything of substance this evening. HASTE makes WASTE....History tells us the same story. Get over your love affair with this man and start critiquing his as an employee. Would you have a guy who read about heart surgery operate on your child. That what you've elected this guy to do. He's never ran a business, led anything and we don't even know how he did in school. He's a great speaker!!!! YEAH. I don't want to put my grandchildren's future into his guess work!!!! HE has no experience for me to place any trust in him.

Paul Begala just spelled out what is wrong with the Republicans, and the results are that they just continue playing politics when the ship is sinking; instead of considering how much people are suffering in not having jobs, etc. It is astonishing how political the Republicans continue to be in light of our economy, and our current situation Why do they consider themselves such loyal Americans, when everything they do points to not ultimately helping this country?

I'm sick of hearing republicans and republican strategists say "well yes George bush and the republicans spent too much over the last 8 yrs but that doesnt mean Obama can do it" because they forget that what they wasted the money on was defense spending, a unnecessary war in Iraq, and other wasteful crap while Obama is only spending money he feels will restart the economy that the republicans, since Reagan, broke. There's a difference between the needless deficit spending republicans did and the required spending to restart the economy

    To KB in OK–

Sorry, but we do know that money has to be paid back. Unfortunately, part of the issue is that the previous administration racked up most of that debt in a wartime spending spree. Now, we have to climb out of it and the housing crisis complicates the mess–so we have to spend money to be able to generate money to pay back those loans. Just like you have buy gas to put in your car to go to work, we have to put some gas in the economic tank.

Also, I define pork as projects that have no real merit., but investments in tedchnology, education and infrastructure I think are investments in the future.
