I do not see how the human body can hold eight babies – the mother must have been miserable during the last months.

    what a shame?

Everyone who send us in this mess are getting the stimulus package of billion dollars from us the tax payers to renovate their office and buying the corporate jets.. but the poor creatures like general public like me and us and creatures from zoo are not getting any more bailouts....

Get rid of the "Federal Highway Adminstration"......The Interstate highway system is complete and give the maintenance to the States.......and have a Diesel tax surcharge for trucks that doe most of the damage to the roads and bridges and not passenger cars!

  4. Rikki, Fargo, ND

Absolutely a new corporate jet would be inappropriate...I work for a bank and after doing a little research I learned that we do not and will not ask for bailout dollars...but even when I got a free coffee mug my first thought was I hope government bailout dollars didn't pay for that!

Did Citi really think they can hide a $50M jet? Is it any wonder this country's economy is a mess.

Rikki and CaseyJ, I'm the same way... my friends/coworkers looked at me oddly tonight when I told them I wanted to be home in time to blog with the AC360 gang! 😉

What Obama needs to do is just give every man woman and child $50,000 dollars directly and let them do what they will with the stimulus money, let the free market play a role.

  8. David, Indiana

I agree w David about Obama's visit to Capitol Hill, it changes the tone if people can sit down and talk with each other, esp in congress. As Ed Rollins note there are differences strongly held views, and as Roland notes there is some political pressure, but Obama is not wasting a minute reaching out congress and esp republicans in congress.

That is a lot of babies. Such a delight eventhough you know that caring for eight newborns will keep their parents and everyone helping them almost unimaginably busy.

Why doesn't the government force these banks to account for that bailout money?

Is this AC360 Anonymous now? I think we're all a little addicted, well at least us "regulars." At least we don't have secret greetings or anything (yet).

Well that says it all for me Citigroup! Yes Thank You The House for handing over all our hard earned money to a bunch of pompous self centered people who DO NOT care about the welfare of this country!

Good job Congress, way to go!

to David Gergen's point about someone to manage the Stimulus Bill – the resolution language states that the Obama Admin Chief Performance Officer (N. Killifer) and a Board of Ispectors General will oversee it..

Profits are earned when money is exchanged between hands and some percentage is earned at each exchange of hand. The bottom line is the circulationof money stops when there is no business and the profit margin reduces.

$45,000,000 on a corporate jet? Are you serious? Can't say it's particularly surprising. Greed can be found at the heart of most of our financial problems.

On another note, I wonder if the Rep. are doing themselves a disservice by not playing ball with Pres. Obama. I am not asking them to roll over and play dead...but I think the American people have spoke loudly when it comes to partisan politics. We want solution and accountability, not party games.

i liked the figure Jack Welsh , He did great by GE. Always wanted to work for someone like him, tell it like it is, expects greatness, and tells u to your face when you are not meeting requirements.
All those that got money and blew it, we should call that loan back in. This $800B+ must have better oversight. NO PORK...

Shame on Citibank.... Did we get our money back?????? I want my portion of the money to them.

    January 27, 2009 at 10:21 pm |
  19. Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio

The government should be able to step in and stop Citibank from throwing away that money!

Has their ever been a more selfish, self-centered generation in the history of mankind than this one?
We lived beyond our means and borrowed to do it, with no hopes of ever realistically being able to pay it off. Now we expect governments to bail out the entire economy by borrowing even more money, that they have no hope of ever repaying.
Rather than paying the price for what we've done we want to pass it on to our children and our children's children.
It's shameful and the worst part is that the spending won't work.

This is just posturing. These so called representatives (both sides) only really care about one thing: re-election which garnishes power (the greatest aphrodisiac).

Meanwhile, somebody has to steer the ship.

    On board, President Obama

I'm completely disgusted by the news of CitiGroup purchasing a $45 million airplane.

Can someone tell me why an airplane is necessary in today's technology age when we have the ability to have conferences via the Internet & software technology?

Where exactly are these people flying to, and why?

...and I'm conserving every dime I have to pay the heating bill!

25 yrs old college tuition, 35 yr old car note credit cards, 45 yr old mortgage medical bills credit cards food. 85 billion will help all of us if it goes to us. stop the madness, we don't trust federal-corporate-banks..give it to the american people –

  24. edda

Just wondering about all this about stimulus package to taxpayers, why couldn't "they" just go back to days when one could write of car, credit loan interest? Wouldn't that help stimulate the economy?

    Keep up the good work.

I respectfully disagree with Ali on some of his characterizations of particular aspects of the 'stimulus package'. Specificaly that the child tax credit, social security and food stamp increases will not stimulate the economy.
What I feel Ali failed to take into account is that all of those programs are aimed towards persons who need the assistance to survive in a respectable manner... and they will not be staching their increases in a foreign bank acct or investing in Wall St fantasies. They will be spending the money on living needs and those purchases will require workers to produce and distribute... Thus, a $1 in the stimulas package will recycle thru multiple hands and be a 'force multiplier' in the US economy

I like & respect Ali, and I listen to his wise voice of reason, but I think he missed the mark on this part of the package.

I wish someone would ask the House Republicans and Senate Republicans–what good tax cuts would do if you didn't have a job and what good did the last 8 years of tax cuts do other than make the rich richer

    January 27, 2009 at 10:21 pm |
  28. Jana, Indiana

I think David Gergen is right. Someone needs to overlook this package.

a great American said 'government can't create wealth'. We need to ride out the recession without the idiots in Congress taking any more of our money.

Why are people shocked that Citibank was going to pick up the plane they planned to get before the financial crisis made them look like a pack of inept morons? They cant well call themselves the jetset with out the jet

Hi Anderson and bloggers. Was impressed with Pres. Obama's interview with the Saudi TV station. The word "respect" came through time and again and I believe that is what he is challenging the Arab and Muslim world with. Show respect and then.....

This "New New Deal" of President Obama's will succeed in doing what the original New Deal did. The original New Deal prolonged and worsened the Great Depression by roughly 10 years. This stimulus will do the same with out current crisis.

    January 27, 2009 at 10:20 pm |
  33. Rikki, Fargo, ND

Once again David Gergen is proven that he is a genius...and it makes me chuckle that Roland was arguing with him!

Ashley, once again I completely agree with you! 🙂 Consumer confidence is key. Until we can get people willing to consume again not much is going to happen with our economy.

    January 27, 2009 at 10:20 pm |
  34. CaseyJ - Palm Springs, CA !

I understand Paulson strongly suggested to Citibank NOT to take delivery on that $50 million jet.

We may have just passed the first consumer credit protection bill just a few months ago but we are way too far from an even playing field. We need further, MORE STRINGENT, laws governing the retail credit industry. They are also to blame for the mess we're in! Their prtactices are predatory, unfair, and usurious, at best.

  35. Michelle D. Fonthill,Ont

Thanks Anderson for keeping the facts straight people need to know whre this money is really going and whose going to be left out in the cold

    January 27, 2009 at 10:20 pm |
  36. Mike, Syracuse NY

I think this stimulus is really more PR than actual help. If the consumers get confidence they will spend. If they spend, things get better. It's all an attempt to convince the public to spend by making them think it will work.

Why is this octuplet thing news? Most likely they are the product of fertility drugs.

Sheri, Odds are they aren't rich and the taxpayers will end up paying for these kids.

    January 27, 2009 at 10:20 pm |
  38. Ashley - Hamlin, NY

Oh my....8 kids? I would like to know what kind of fertility pills she went on so I never choose them.

  39. Angela

It doesn't really qualify as bipartisan if you only talk and don't take action. Obama hasn't agreed to add some of the right kind of tax cuts that Republicans have called for. Obama hasn't gone through and eliminated the majority of ridiculous spending, only two.

    January 27, 2009 at 10:20 pm |
  40. anderson cooper

what do you all think of David Gergen's idea of a "czar" to oversee the stimulus spending?

    January 27, 2009 at 10:20 pm |

    Hi Anderson!
    Octuplet births? That's amazing.
Are the mother and babies are ok?

When does the health care plan that is the same as congress gets kick into place for those without a health care plan?

    January 27, 2009 at 10:19 pm |
  43. EJ (USA)

food stamps won’t help the economy. This isn’t “change”

So we can't help the people who have fallen much deeper into unfortunate circumstances?

    January 27, 2009 at 10:19 pm |
  44. xtina, chicago IL

Even our 'poorest' Americans have money for cell phones, cars, peds, fast food, movie tickets, gadgets. Obama isn't "changing" anything if he thinks more food stamps will make a difference.

Not feeling confident in the stimulus. Things seem to be declining at an even more rapid pace then originally thought.

Awwwwww! Thos babies are so cute! God bless that family. No idea how that woman is going to actually pull off breast feeding them all though.... more power to her!

  48. Monica Chapman, Milford, CT

EJ, I'm almost certain you're right on that one! Still think she'll need as much rest as she can get though!

    January 27, 2009 at 10:18 pm |
  49. Dee

It's not a stimulus plan alone. It's a recovery plan set to help people in serious trouble now; some of it is stimulus. The rich have had tax cuts all along and well, "here we are". So no need to repeat that mistake twice.

    January 27, 2009 at 10:18 pm |
  50. Philoan Tran - Houston

@ Augusto – you're absolutely right. It's about jobs! Tax credits to businesses are fine but that will not create jobs. I represent small and midsize business owners – I know that they will take money saved from tax credits and pay their debts but not hire any new employees. People are just plain scared right now! How stupid can Republicans be.
