Live Blog from the Anchor Desk 1/2/09

[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/01/02/liveblogfinal.copy.jpg]

Tonight on 360°
Airstrikes continue in Gaza as Israel amasses troops and artillery at the border.

A ground assault could begin at any moment. We'll have a live report from Nic Robertson in Israel.

And tragedy strikes John Travolta and his family. His sixteen year old son dies while the family is on vacation.

We’re blogging throughout the hour, and we hope you will join us.

Just follow our rules. Here are some of them:

1) Keep it short (we don't have time to read a "book)
2) Don't write in ALL CAPS (we don't like screaming)
3) Use your real name

    Dewey,

Israeli soldiers dont just point and shoot. I served in the Israeli army and I, nor any of my friends were ever trained to shoot with a blindfold on... in fact its just the opposite. Where do you get your information from?

People need to go back to when this began, 1948. The UN wanted to partition Palestine into 2 staes, one Jewish the other Palestinian. The Jews agreed, and the Arab League attacked trying to wipe Israel out. If they had agreed then, there would not have been all the subsequent violence.

Wow - looking forward to the special on the Obama's this weekend. Those are two lucky little girls to have Michelle and Barak as parents. It's refreshing to see their family dynamic.

This hour has gone by fast.

    Good show Anderson.

Hope everyone has a good weekend.

The saddest part of this conflict is it is happening in the middle of an election and the government has to show it is just as tough on Hamas as Benjamin Netanyahu, the extreme leader of Lukid who is close in the polls.

In my view, this is self-serving cynicism at its worst.

The Bush policy on the middle east obviously failed. This is not just between Israel and Palestinians. Disengagement does not work. This is between Islam and Judaism, and a third party the UN will need to help solve the problem and create an environment for peace.

Goodness Gracious....so many people think that there is just an easy way out of everything. Ex-husband giving you problems...Have him taken care of. Life is not that easy...nobody said it would be. They just said it'd be worth it.

Hamas hides behind women and children firing missiles then blames Israel when innocent people get killed. They are nothing but terrorists and cowards.

Yikes! What did Beth's husband do to make a so called "goody two shoes" turn terribly bad? It must have been quite something.

No one is worth going to jail for. Who is that stupid? Yeesh.

No wonder there was a custody battle, the woman is insane, trying to hire someone to kill her ex, his wife and his parents.

Looks like the ex knew why he wanted custody. And fellow bloggers, please don't say that somehow she must have snapped and it drove her to it. Let's look at it rationally, if it hadn't been in her in the first place, it wouldn't have come out in the last place.

Instead of firing rockets into Israel, Hamas should have aired their "beefs" loudly to the western press in order for the world to understand their concerns and then perhaps this would pressure Israel to back-off from whatever it is they're doing that's ticking off Hamas. I'm still not sure why all this is happening. When will this insanity stop?

It is time for the back and forth between Israel & Palestine to stop once and for all. Israel................end it now. It is justified.

the news regarding Gaza is sad. the news about John Travolta's son in heartbreaking. but these things are beyond one individual's control.

the most disturbing piece of news tonight is, without a doubt, the lady contracting services to have another human killed.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE! sometimes, the only thing we have control over are the decisions we make. people need to think a WHOLE LOT MORE about their actions. some things cannot be taken back or undone.

I hope Bush steps out and actually releases some statements regarding the issue because after all, Obama has a few weeks before entering the White House, and we need the President to do something now, whether it be a statement, meeting, etc.

Regarding to John Travolta's son death, this could be caused by many factor. so focusing on what the boy ate made it wrong on differential dignoses. They should look into any possible medication that the boy must i have been taken, Like ASPRIN, which could cause Reye's sydrome m not only in Chicken pox or varicella disease but other viral infection.
My condolence goes to the Travolta's family

Is the pro Palestinian faction so nieve as to believe that if, for instance, Cuba started lobbing missiles at Miami, the USA would not lob a very large bomb back in return? Why is Isreal not allowed to defend itself? Hamas are terrorists. If the Palestinians don't want to deal with that fact they betyter get used to Israel dealing with it!

Mari- don't apologize for having little knowledge of the conflict as it is a difficult one to understand. The conflict stems from a number of things-yes religion, yes-politics...also Palestine is not happy with the borders made there. They are fighting over land and have been for centuries. It is a dispute over who was there first and who should have rights to all the land...Jerusalem in particular.

As a regular viewer of CNN, I don’t understand why CNN is afraid of taking a stance on this issue, When the Mumbai terror attacks happened, CNN wasted no time in condemning the violence. Twice the number of people have been killed in Gaza. Where is the condemnation?

Reporters like Ben Wedeman have repeatedly made statements like “there is nowhere else for Hamas to put military installations other than in civilian areas because of how densely populated Gaza is”. Why then are Israeli officials still allowed to bring up this nonsensical point in order to defend the heavy civilian death toll?

Israel (and not Hamas) broke the ceasefire by bombing the “ticking tunnel” a few months ago. I still remember stories from a few months back. Hamas even wanted to renew the ceasefire on the condition that crossings and goods were opened and IDF ceases fire in Gaza. Israeli newspapers are not scared of reporting this fair and clear. Read “Delusions of victory in Gaza” by Zvi Barel (The Haaretz, dated 28/12/08).

Now, why can’t CNN report on this fairly and justly?

I am against the actions of Hamas, but what the Israeli government is doing, with the support of our U.S. government is not pragmatic in the larger picture of the Middle East and of the world and is obscenely immoral. You said keep it short. Some of the relevant details can be filled in by you and your viewers, I hope.

Jose, Israel has accepted the premise of a divided Palestine with an Israeli and Palestinian state since 1948. It's the Arabs that want to exterminate Israel.

Should people in Gaza spend money on missiles when they have little food or medicine? Hamas is murdering Palestinian children by Israelie retaliation against Hamas missiles. Who is supplying Hamas with weapons? Why does Hamas put Palestinians in harms way.

All of you: Stop killing children!

To all of you complaining that PE Obama is too silent. He is not the President until Jan 20,2009. Read the constitution. He could be charged with treason for speaking, especially if it contradicted the current administration. And to Nasser – charge Obama with a war crime for wanting to protect his daughters and speaking out about it? Isn't that why you live in a country that allows free speach? Oh, and by the way – it would not be concidered a war crime! If you want peace – the Pal. people have to rid themselves of a terrorist organization whatever name they operate under.

The conflict in the Middle East has continued for centuries, even during Jesus' time, there was violence in that area. Not until they (both sides) want to live peacefully, there can't be peace there. It is a losing battle all around. As Gandhi spoke: "Be the change you want to see".

The Blago story continues to become more and more of a circus act. Burris should not accept the appointment; Blago should resign. Stop the drama already!

    hi
The only soluation for the palestinian-Israeli conflict is to wave the the israeli occupation from the west bank and Gaza strip and allow the palestinians to have their own country as the rest of the world. i do not know how the american adminestration still insiesting to support israel blindlies, and repeating the same sintance (Israel is definding it self from Hamas) or Fateh befor)
My question to the American adminstration who is difending the Palestionans from the israeli occupation since years and years.
    Thank You

Israel has every right do defend herself and never initiates any of the violence in this region. What other country in the world would allow its people to be bombed daily without retaliation? No such country exists...Hamas needs to act in the best interest of its people and not hide behind them like cowards.
