Caroline Kennedy would fight for N.Y. in the Senate

I was named schools chancellor in New York City in 2002, shortly after Mayor Michael Bloomberg won control over the city's school system.

At the time, our schools were in desperate need of a strong advocate. Few prominent New Yorkers were willing to take a chance on our schools - or invest in a system that many saw as beyond repair.

Caroline Kennedy was willing.

I am frankly apalled at some of the insulting remarks directed at Caroline Kennedy. She has hardly had a carefree life. Money can't buy everything and it certainly can't make up for the loss of her father and then her uncle when she was a young girl. Add to that the unexpected death of her beloved mother in her 60's and the tragic death of her only sibling at the age of 38 and it's obvious that she has had more than her share of sadness.

Caroline Kennedy has always conducted herself with the utmost class, grace and dignity under the most difficult of circumstances. She is educated, intelligent, a successful book author and active in civic affairs. She certainly doesn't need to go after this senate seat, but she seems to believe that she has something of worth to contribute. I think she should be considered on her merits.

The Kennedy haters will never accept her. But I dislike this hostility towards anyone who is rich and privileged. They are not all fools like Paris Hilton. Some of them can actually think and reason and love their country. She doesn't NEED to do this, but she WANTS to do this. She deserves the chance to make her case.

I don't understand all the malice toward the Kennedy family. Do people dislike them because they're rich, or is it because the anti-Kennedy crowd is mainly republicans? A rich Kennedy could be like the typical weathy person who are only out for themselves and their profits, and could care less about government unless it means less taxes. At least the Kennedys are proud to serve their country, even when they don't have to.

Caroline Kennedy is not qualified for the Senate seat. Joel Klein was not qualified to be Chancellor of the NYC schools. BUT TEACHERS MUST be qualified and certified. What a double standard. The Bloomberg/Kelin administration just wants another person to cover for their their misguided dictatorship.

I have no doubt that Caroline would do her best to try to help New York. She seems to be the type that once she sets her mind to something then she does it to the fullest of her extent. But if you are not qualified enough and know enough about the job at hand then doing your best won't matter.
