and finally, don't we find it at all ironic that we are discussing this on a day that drew peterson is about to marry his FOURTH wife? Oh, the sanctity of marriage MUST be protected. I hope she lives through 2009!

I was a Mayor for 8 years, and yes Anderson, that is PORK.

    Abbey,
Unfortunately, your Florida mayor is a typical local politician. If they would bother to study history – just within the mast 40 years. Perhaps they should be requesting loans of the Feds and be willing to mortgage their own community's future income – kind of what the bankers should have done with the unqualified home mortgage seekers.

Yes, that is pork barrel spending. We should go over the projects and select only those that actually are beneficial. In these hard times we don't need water park slides or skate board parks. Everyone needs to sacrifice something.

Rick Warren is the primary purveyor of persecution of gay and lesbian citizens and Obama’s invitation to him to deliver the invocation at his inauguration is tantamount to inviting Adolph Hitler to a reunion of Holocaust survivors.

Are you serious? Do you really feel that way?

Is someone considered dead because they cannot be found? But if he is getting married suggests that he knows she's dead.

Who would the progressives prefer President-elect Obama choose? I am not sure what the point is here. . . I consider myself a progressive who is a Christian and to suggest that a "mistake" has been made in asking this particular minister to give the prayer is ludicrous. To further suggest that the time for bridge building is not during the inauguration is short sighted to say the least.
My only question is when should the new President attempt to build bridges and find common ground?

Not to burst anybody's bubble, but there are gay Republicans too. So to say that gay marriage is an issue that only liberals believe in may not be accurate.

these sound like pork, but also sound like possible projects that can improve the livability of a city. Improve the livability of the city and people will wan to live there, if people want to live there then maybe businesses will locate there for a happy, healthy workforce.

And the skate parks, zoos etc might just keep kids out of trouble by giving them educational and fitness options.

I happen to be black, and cannot stand it when other black people get so outraged over the LGBT civil rights battle being compared to the Blackj civil rights battle. Nobody is trying to compare the struggle in terms of slavery. There are similarities though: being denied jobs, not being able to marry(miscegenation), military equality, not being able to buy homes in certain areas, and the list goes on. Those are the things being compared, both groups encounter similar problems.

To choose Rick Warren is extremely inflamatory to Gays and Lesbians especially when we are going throguh the Prop 8 issues here in California. Obama is well aware of the Prop 8 issue at this time. I feel Obama’s choice of Rick Warren is slap in the face of all Gays and Lesbians. We deserve equal rights just as anyone else does. Obama (assuming he experienced discrimination in his lifetime) should be well aware of this fact and how painful discrimination is.

No! This isn't pork! We need these new parks... even the skate parks and polar bears. CNN has been reporting on this all day as though there were something deviant and malicious in these mayors making jobs and parks for all of us to enjoy forever. this is exactly where the bailout money should have been going from bailout #1 to date.

Yes it's pork barrel spending at its finest. If senators can do it and get away with it why can't the mayors at the local level of government? It's only fair right?

Geez, that Mayor is an idiot – not know his own city projects.

Actually our city could use some of that money. We actually do have a need for some new facilities. Actual, real stuff, like a new police building.

i saw the ready to go projects with miami mayor... though majority of project may be alright, there seems to be significant amount of non-infrastructure, non job related projects

So YES, it DOES sound like pork !!!

  23. Carlton Colquitt

The mayor of Miami doesn't realize he has asked for $1.5 million for a boondoggle. Right. And Obama is not a bigot lover, either. Oh, this is a great day for our beloved republic, isn't it?

Anderson, Obviously Peterson's new "squeeze" is just another bimbo looking for attention by attaching herself to someone in the public eye no matter how notorious. So what else is new?

Rick Warren was a horrible and divisive choice for Obama to have made. How can Obama be a fierce advocate of equal rights of Gays and Lebians as he says he is when he does NOT support marriage for gay people? Neither does Rick Warren, obviously. The two agree on this issue. They may have more in common when it comes to prejudicial beliefs that we know. Both men are discriminatory.

This young woman who wants to marry Drew Peterson is like most "other women." Other women always think "it" will never happen to them. In this instance, "it" happens not only to be being cheated on but also apparently being killed. What's the saying...youth is wasted on the young?!

Is the mayor of Miami saying he is not an "average American?" Maybe that is why he is so out of touch.

I do worry about the fragility of the economy, or say vulnerability at this point. If we don't help the big 3 we may lose a lot of happiness economically, but just say well being, something that we do have right now, or have the chance for right now

As a professional municipal and county planner, this rush to provide projects reminds me of the same thing that happened in the 1970's. No rules, no oversite, few worthwile projects.
I recall one project that would have provied free buses for a rural county transportation project. Problem, no one saw that the local resources were not available to fund the driver pay, equipment maintenance or the eventual replacement of the buses. A need was there, but no thought was given to sustainability.

Why do people keep saying that the LGBT community is anti-Christian for being angry about the Warren choice? They aren't against all Christians – just this particular one who, it just so happens, compared them to pedophiles. How "tolerant" would you all be if someone called you a pedophile? There are many, many Christians in the LGBT community, but that doesn't mean they have to accept views that dehumanize them.

For a wedding present I'm buying the bride-to-be a GPS locator device that goes under the skin. . . and telling her to only tell her lawyer how to find her location. Just in case.

another good ? to ask is what losers will be attending or actually in the wedding ceremony. he is disgusting; does his future wife actually think she will not end up severely beaten then murdered like thoose b4 her?

Anderson, Erica, I think the nations Mayors don't get it when they talk infastructures. They are thinking there is a bottomless pit in DC full of money. This is a prime example of why so many local and state governments are in dire trouble today. They just don't get it and that ills me to no end.

To Reverend Pam Hoffman I also would like to point out that the book you use to demean and degrade gay people also says "let the women be silent in churches" in the NEW testament. Why do you skip the verses that say things like that? gluttony is a sin, yet many evangelicals including Rick Warren are overeaters...the bible condones slavery and wife abuse (women obey your husbands and son on) Pick and choose that's the problem. You pick what you like to justify hate and discrimination and you toss out the things that would inconvenience YOU. And by the way...I personally couldn't care less whether some think being gay is a sin or not...there are still those who think interracial marriage is wrong...so it's subjective...however, he compared me to a grown man who has sex with a child. That is offensive and hurtful. Nothing good comes from dialogue like that.
