Shoe Business: Bush in Baghdad

Karen Tumulty

En route to Afghanistan, the President had a lengthy interview with the pool about the incident and a number of other topics. Here's the transcript:

11:39 P.M. (Local)

Q Quick ducking there, sir.

THE PRESIDENT: I was worried about you. I thought you were going to have a heart attack.

Q I thought I was, too. (Laughter.) I'm with you on that.

THE PRESIDENT: Okay, my opening statement: I didn't know what the guy said, but I saw his sole. (Laughter.) You were more concerned than I was. I was watching your faces.

Q I saw something black and round go by my face.

Q Just to see that -

THE PRESIDENT: - his first - other than shoes. (Laughter.)

Q - to duck. (Laughter.)

THE PRESIDENT: I'm pretty good at ducking, as most of you will know -

Q You were quick.

Q - ducking -

THE PRESIDENT: I'm talking about ducking your questions. (Laughter.)

Q So you weren't a lame duck. (Moans and groans.)

I just want to remind people that be it funny and like gbush or not he is still our president and should have a little better protection from flying shoe culture. It looked like he could have thrown as many shoes as he had feet. I mean, what if they were not shoes. We should thank bush for watching his own back and being fleet of foot and having jokes afterward. Now lets see what happens to this guy will he go to jail or will they simply give him his shoes back.

There's no news to the effect of what happened or will happen to the shoe throwing reporter. If Iraq is given sovereignty in the matter, then he would be released to the Iraqi authorities. Given the worldwide publicity the act was intended to generate, I would think that he wouldn't be held in US custody for too long.

Maybe this will inspire terrorists to give up IEDs and body bombs. Throwing shoes seems much more inspiring. Iraqis are taking to the streets in support of this fearless reporter. I think when young, would be terrorists see this they may decide to think twice about using mass murder as a way of making their point. Some european radicals have had success using cream pies as an effective weapon.

There are some presidents that hide from confrontation. 9-11 was not the first attack on our soil. Others ordered pizza and never left there desks. Talk about being in the line of fire, I know this president would take a bullet/shoe or what ever for us.
