The fastest stimulus would be to get rid of the federal gas taxes. This could immediately stimulate the economy. My gas is now $1.99 per gallon vs. $4.10 this summer. It would be fair to all.

    700 billion?

    for what equity?

Banks only hold your money, and transfers should be done through a federally protected postal system.

Banks are independent, but lending should be an illegal practice as it is not investing.

Investing takes the creation of a business to invest in.

You all want the status quo, but it is failing. Please rethink what money is to you.

It is only a tool of trade to me and can not be compared to the value of life unless that life is to be harvested. Work/service can be harvested, but when an animal is used to work it should be rewarded.

I dont get what all these economic problems mean.
Who started them, what were and are the causes, who or what is responsible?
    I suspect fraud once again!
Wasnt the 750 billion bailout in September supposed to fix everthing?
I think people are being had.
In 3 years will we look back on horror what we are doing?
lets not forget what we did to the leadup to the war.
    was the war worth it?
will these bailouts be worth it?

i guess when i become a grandpapa in the future, my grandchildren will ask why? i will tell them i have no idea!

What's the difference between the "National Economic Council" (Larry Summers) and the "Council of Economic Advisors" (Christina Romer)?

Don't understand why Citigroup used the first 25B to acquire other banks? Why not use the money to fix problems within?

I don't look at it as bailing out rich people...I look at it as bailing out industries which in turn bails out the average joes. The hope is that in bailing out these industries that they in turn wont have to lay off as many of those average joes that they have working for them.

Good evening everyone. It is a promising day today for our economy. I am comfortable with Pres-Elect Obama's economic team. Stability and a sense of certainty for the future is always good for our volatile economy. Mr. Geithner appears less confused than Mr. Paulson even though I don't know much about him. Absolutely promising indeed.

Look down the road. Citibank? It will get worse before it gets better. There's a line of them about to fall.

Jolene, I would also like to know if that is possible.

I just don't understand it at all, not at all. Read that Citibank is getting a multi-billion $ bailout, they have their share of "toxic" loans, yet the automotive industry is pretty much told "tough luck, you brought it on yourself". Yes, I do agree that perhaps they (Ford, Chrysler and GM CEOs) made a huge error in flying the company aircraft to DC instead of jet-pooling and maybe they were a teensy bit arrogant in their pleas for help. My question is: How many JOBS will the failure of the Big 3 affect? It's not only the direct employees, but what about the suppliers, the truckers, railroad and ship employees, the people in the towns that run businesses? What does the government tell them – sorry, you're just not important enough for us to help? Maybe it's more a case of "you're not RICH enough for us to help".

Jolene, there is no Constitutional way Obama can take office before Jan. 20th. If Bush resigns, Cheney becomes Pres. until Jan.

I like what Gloria said: we need continuity. We need ppl running this govt who know what's what. We need ppl working on the economy who know what they are doing, what has been done, what didn't work, and fresh ideas to make it work. Just because ppl are "insiders" doesn't mean they can't bring change. Maybe they were just outnumbered by the status quo ppl.

To fix something you have to really acknowledge how it happened. Will Obama really try to get to the bottom of that?

1 IT would seem to me that the US needs a stimulus package without raising the deficit.

2 We need a stimulus to help buisness and low income Americans deal with the holiday seasons.

3 Send out the earn income credits early Based on 2007 tax return.

4 You can easily do this because all the information is already in the tax information.

5 There are several different ways to do this mathematically
    A. You could retrieve all money back from 2008 tax return
    B. Or you could charge percentage of that back in a 5 or 10 years period at 10 or 20 percent. This would keep the stimulus on going. In the tax payers can retreat all there money back.

The stock market is a mess and I fear that this up-rise in stock prices is going to be short-lived.

I've yet to here anyone in the Bush administration or Obama team say how we will pay for all the bailouts and stimulus package. The answer appears to be 'charge it' ,which is what caused this mess in the first place.

Hi Soledad good see you, Erica, everyone. I hadn't thought of that but it definitely was a tag team approach today and that helped. Maybe not intended but that's how it worked.

Why is this 20B injection into citi considered a 2nd bailout? Isn't this a continuation of the 700B rescue?

David I was in a tail spin, thank God for the stock surge at the end of last week, and today, I feel it's due to Obama transition taking hold, also obviously citi rescue action today.

I have an old Citibank credit card with zero balance and a very high credit score. I got a letter today saying my interest rate would be 24.99% on purchases starting 01/09. In Florida, many home equity lines are being turned off and reduced. Hang in there bloggers!

Here's what it is. Been trying to put my finger on it. Americans don't mind folks making money. They mind rewarding failure. They mind rich dumb folks still ending up ahead. This country believes in merit, naively perhaps. Kills me that the Senate and Admin. just realized strings had to be attached to a bailout.. Just kills me. How stupid ...

The government can’t get it right: they propose a bill to buy troubled assets, then change the initial plan and give out an additional $60 million to a company who has already received $85 million and now they have given $20 million to another financial institution and and people are still losing jobs. Do you wonder why we have a $10 trillion deficit?
