Morning Buzz: Down to Business

Penny Manis
AC360 Senior Producer

President-elect Barack Obama has 77 days to put together a government and we await word of cabinet appointments today onwards. He is in Chicago for the foreseeable future, but he is not alone. Our own reporters will be camped out there with him in the Windy City for the rest of the year to cover his next moves.

The priority cabinet appointment would be White House Chief of Staff, to help shepherd the Transition to Power, and given our current financial situation, the Treasury Secretary would be another key appointment. Who do you think should take the top posts in the new administration? Weigh in!

Today, Obama is expected to get his first top secret intelligence briefing. Does that mean he finds out what is in Area 51? Apart from the aliens, that is. As this is the first wartime transition in 40 years, he is likely to hear much about Al Qaeda, Iraq, and Iran.

Director of National Intelligence Michael McConnell leads this first briefing, as he and other senior national security officiers brief Bush each morning, 6 days a week, on the most sensitive info affecting US security, and will start bringing Prez-elect Obama into that loop.

President Bush has promised to keep Obama abreast of critical decisions to ensure a smooth transition to power, and he offers remarks today in the 11amet hour following a meeting with his Cabinet re/transition and the months ahead.

The GOP is soul searching, working out the best road to rebuilding the party. Joe Johns will have a story on what is next for this party. Of course, speculation is already swirling over Palin’s next step. In fact, in her hometown of Wasilla you can already find Palin 2012 tee-shirts.

Our guy Gary Tuchman is in Wasilla, Alaska and caught up with Palin today as she attempts to go back to her former life. He will spend some time with her and we’ll hear all about it later tonight.

In other news, we are keeping an eye on California, some counties there are already stopping gay marriages in light of the ballot against them apparently passing. Randi Kaye has a great story on what it’s like to grow up as a kid in the White House. And we’ll see how the markets fare on the heels of the Election, yesterday there was nearly a 500 point drop, what will happen today? See you tonight!

    Bev,
I'm assuming your remark is in reference to the previous Bush administration and the lack of information that was left for Clinton when he moved into the Presidency. Remember...........there were TERRIBLE glitches and all of the computers were dumped!!!!!! BUT, never fear, Clinton did not blink an eye and said, "That's okay, we'll take care of it". Who needs a BUSH anyway???????

Here are a few things I would like to see our soon to be president do over the next week:

I hope President-elect Obama takes a few days to take his family to Hawaii to grieve and pay their respects to his grandmother.

Maybe President-elect Obama can change his middle name to her last name out of respect and gratitude for all she did for him and so he carries that part of her and his grandfather and his mother into the history books.

I hope that President-elect Obama gives Colin Powell a position for he is one person whose advice he can trust and who he knows won't be making any power plays on him, as I fear Biden might for I was a bit put off by the way Biden kept even up until the other day referring to his running mate and BOSS as "this guy" and the whole mark my words he will be tested to me seemed self serving that he was saying see he will need my experience and I will be important for like McCain these old dogs feel they have some kind of entitllement and probably harbor some resentment of new fella coming along and surpassing them, and his he will be advicing Obama statement the other day sounded like he needs to one up him and we have and need only ONE president, ONE man in charge, and Biden can GIVE HIS OPINION but I would call the VP's position as an advisor... Obama please keep him in his place for it will cause problems I can just sense it.. and Powell has never had presidential ambitions and I trust him 100% to defer to your power, status and position, but I fear Biden will resent playing second fiddle but I hope I am wrong!

My honest opinion is that the Dow will hit 7000 something in the time frame that it takes Obama in get into the White House. People think I'm crazy in thinking this, but it's not a first. No mention of Tropical Storm Paloma, grant it is not suppose to effect the US, but it has the potential to develop into a strong Category 3 or a weak 4. The water is still too warm and the wind shear is very low, once it hits the higher wind shear the storm will be too strong to have a great effect on it. Cuba will be effected greatly!

I would hope that Mr Obama has a place in his administration for Hillary Clinton, possibly a Foreign Secretary or something along those lines. Mr Obama could heal a lot of wounds that were opened up during the Primary Elections, and would have to look forward to a second, four – year term in the White House. Eighteen million people is a lot to isolate ( Hillary's voters ) and Mr Obama hinted at this when he said in a recent speech that " we will need the Clintons a lot, in the coming years. " And he should bring in a Republican, or two, in as well, ( Keep your friends close, but your perceived enemies closer ). Regards from Ireland.

I wondering if the republicans will realize that a lot of their supporters voted for Obama. I don't think Obama is the only one who needs to find the middle ground – that's not to say they should sell their core beliefs. It will look poorly on republicians if they don't find a way to compromise, since American very clearly is going to support our new president.

Keep in mind, we chose this president and we'll be watching not only what he does but what those around him do on both sides of the aisle. We obviously know what to do to fix the problem. Our votes did that in the most unlikely campaign ever. If we need to put more democrats in to get things done... then next election we'll make it happen. I truly believe Obama will work to find common ground and urge our other elected officials on both sides to do so as well.

I overhead an angry republican talk about keeping Obama under control (I was just walking through the room and didn't catch who it was) and thought to myself, McCain came across as a angry old man who felt entitled (rightfully or wrongly) and it didn't work for him, or Hillary for that matter. Perhaps I may suggest finding a more postitive and hopetul approach.

How can this country, in the 21st century, still use the Electoral College, designed for the horse and buggy days, when information was not available instantly and around the world? The electoral tally, although it does not change the outcome of the election, does not accurately reflect the will of the people. In this election, it causes it to appear that Barack Obama has a mandate flowing from a landslide victory, which, according to the popular vote, he does not have. It would be a major task, but it is time to cast the Electoral College onto the ash heap of history. It has ceased to served its purpose.

It's clear to me Anderson Cooper did not watch reruns of Scrubs last night. If he had he would have learned, as I did, that "penultimate" means "next to last", not the opposite.
Just thought you should know, as he used the word this morning with regards to the new Chief of Staff choice and how he is a 'penultimate Washington insider'. I don't think Anderson meant to infer that he is next to last on the list of people in the loop.

Among all of President-elect Obama's briefings is Operation Puppy Adoption. If the First Family were to adopt a puppy from one of the countless animal shelters in our country their actions will send a powerful message to all seeking to add a dog to the family: The new family dog doesn't need to cost hundreds or thousands of dollars, or be some fancy purebred in order to give its heart to you. This action alone by the First Family will save the lives of thousands of dogs in pounds, not only in the USA, but across the world.

Congratulations on your ratings. I thought you guys did great on your coverage. Although I favor and support independent news, I hope CNN keeps the pressure on Fox. And maybe the days of reporting opinions will go away.

I just hope Bush and his cronies give President-elect Obama ALL the information. It will also be interesting to see down the road what emails, paperwork, etc. have been destroyed by them.

I hope the Obama administration is ready to hit the ground running.
I was wondering if a soon to be president ever generated music,
art, t-shirts, music videos and even had newspapers selling out all
across the country. I am sure the Time issue featured last night on
360 will be a popular collector's item. I know people who are planning
to be in Washington on the day he takes office. When you look at the
celebrations at home and abroad one can only wonder will there be
a huge boom in tourism to Washington ? Could this be a boost to
    the economy ?

Well with Obama getting all of these briefings I hope he isn't too bored today listening to all of that hot air. LOL

It'll be interesting to me to see if Stevens drops out and if Sarah Palin maybe tries to take his seat. I hope that Gary asked her about that. I mean asked her if she was interested.

I knew Cali would pass prop 8 so it doesn't surprise me that they are already enforcing it.
