Signs of a fierce battle

Jennifer Donahue
New Hampshire Institute of Politics

The eve of the election, the New Hampshire Democratic Party has rolled out a lawn sign campaign where they have copied the style of Senator John Sununu's re-election campaign logo and are actively posting the signs in front of his campaign signs.

In a two-hour period on Monday morning, the "Social Security" sign appeared; joining the "stick with Bush" and "Stem Cell research" signs that sprouted up sometime Saturday night in what appears to be an aggressive last-minute attempt to sway voters undecided voters against Sununu.

On my way into work, I saw real Sununu signs place to obscure Shaheen signs. If that isn't bush league, I don't know what is. On a positive note, the NH Department of Transportation removed a bunch of Sununu signs at the 93S – 293 split yesterday, after I called in the morning.

Today the American People after eight years of nonsense will speak out against ignorance and stupidity in government.

After today THANK GOD we won't have to listen to anymore Hockey Mom stories amd 'You Betcha's" from an under educated and inept. VP candidate. We won't have to listen to any more McCain lies about how he is any different from G W Bush. The ignorant will be removed from the halls of power and America will be on the mend.

The true stewards of change PRESIDENT OBAMA and VICE PRESIDENT BIDEN will be working together to choose a cabinet which will be working FOR every American. The divisive and down right WRONG policies of the Republican right wing will be squelched and we will finally after eight years of regression and repression be moving this nation forward once again.

From every absurd Right Wingnut policy of teaching 'creationist theory' as a science' to conducting 'religious holy wars in the Middle east' under the guise of 'democratization' to Herbert Hoover let big business do whatever they what at the expense of the rest of us to no matter what these WHACKO'S have done to screw things up the 'you're on your own' philosophy will finally be out of our lives.

To the rest of the world we can now proudly shout that 'THE AMERICA OUR FOUNDING FATHERS ENVISONED IN THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUION AND IT BILL OF HUMAN RIGHTS IS BACK !!!! NO MORE GITMOS AND VIOLATIONS OF THE GENEVA CONVENTION!!! NO MORE GOVERNMENT SPONSORED HATE MONGERING BY THE AMERICAN CHRISTIAN RIGHT AGAINST MUSLIMS AND OTHER NON-CHRISTIANS UNDER THE GUISE OF SPEADING DEMOCRACY !!!!! NO MORE LET THE MULTINATIONALS OUTSOURCE OUR INFRASTRUCTURE AND JOBS JUST TO MAKE MORE MONEY FOR A SELECT FEW !!!!! NO MORE YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE RIGHT WING DOES TO LOWER YOUR STANDARD OF LIVING AND YOUR LIFE !!!!!

PRESIDENT OBAMA AND VICE PRESIDENT BIDEN ........ WOW ! THAT HAS A SIMPLY WONDERFUL RING TO IT !

    Kathryn,
That sounds horrible. I have heard a lot of stories about family members and churches turning against each other in this election. It is turning ugly. Stay strong; it takes integrity to vote for whom you believe in despite the pressure to cave in.

Can you IMAGINE what would have happened to everyone's Social Security IF it had been privatized?! With the number of Americans actually saving regularly, only at 1%....... one per cent! How can anyone suggest privatizing Social Security, insane!

@ Susan Dwight "as a matter of fact I doubt he will live a long life if he is elected" what kind of statement is that? Are you suggesting that someone will kill Sen.Obama???????? Because you seem to be saying that! And "we are not just ready for a black president" who isn't?? The far-right-white-supremacists? They will never be ready.

Why would ALL hell break loose?? The demographics of Sen. Obama's supporters come from all races, all ethnic backgrounds and faiths. IT WAS IOWA, WHITE IOWA, WHO GAVE SEN. OBAMA HIS FIRST WIN.

Unlike the nay-sayers who are REALLY thinly-veiled-racists, I happen to BELIEVE in the innate goodness and fair-mindedness of the American people!

People who label others as white, black, etc., are really people who fear "others" which is the Republican mantra. The Republicans are the party of hate, lies, fear and division.

Peace be you, Susan, should Sen. Obama be elected tomorrow you will be wrong about "all hell breaking loose"............ you will hopefully watch our Nation turn the page on the past and embrace a tomorrow in which ALL Americans are worthy, ALL Americans can achieve anything, ALL Americans can and do succeed.

Jesus is clear on how we treat our neighbors, and the far-right keep claiming that they are Christians........well, what part of "love your neighbor as yourself" do the far-right-hate-lies-fear-and-division mongers not GET?!

Time to get ready..........."change" is on the way. There are alot of people who are ready for this change. This country has been taken down for to long. The economy has to go up. People and their rights have to be belived in again. The consitution has to be upheld.
Those that leave office, like pres bush/cheney/rice/gonzalez need to have the law appllied to their illegal activities.

    Go Obama/Biden '08

Hey Kathryn, I am farthest from being prejudicial, My work is full of multicultural people whom I love to death. We are all good friends as well. I just need for you to get the big picture here before I talk to you about your vote. I beleive that we will be doing Obama a huge injustice by voting for him. As a matter of fact I doubt he will live a long life if he is elected. We are just not ready for a black president. Not at all at all at all. not yet anyway. If you have really thought long and hard about your vote, then go for it. But I am just saying, we are not ready for what is about to happen if Obama is elected. All Hell will break loose.

Kathryn November 3rd, 2008 2:32 pm ET: Kathryn you go girl!!! Stay strong in your beliefs and your vote. I'm surprised at people who call themselves Christians can behave like such demons when it suits them. Hopefully when your daughter calms down she wil realize no matter who wins you are still her mother and you're still a family. I have a few mis-guided folk in my family who are voting McCain, on 11/5 they are my family and I will love them the same. I've already warned them if McCain wins it will a long 4 yrs for them because I will be blaming them every chance I get.

Chicago style politics spreading across the nation...not a good thing. Does anyone know how Obama even got into the mainstream of Chicago politics? You have to be an insider...you don't just become one. I am still undecided, also. I really want a box that says "None of the above" and can both parties or any independent party do better...we'll give you 3 more months. The future of our country is at stake. Not that I want Bush three more months but I don't really want anyone running either.

    Kathryn,

First thanks for your support. Secondly get one of those flyers and turn it into the IRS.

"At our church, flyers, were passed out, after the service. What it suggested was a vote for Obama was voting against God. This is just unbelievable to me."

As a christian, I am appalled at the many ministers who stood in their pulpits this Sunday and told their congregations to vote for the person who is "pro-life" or the person who is "anti-abortion". What they all fail to remember is that even Jesus gives us a choice.

I wouldn't believe if I didn't see it with my own eyes, someone is still going to vote Republican after all the damage done to the country! Finally, no more create a crisis/mislead the country/rape the taxpayer policies. No more corporate lobbyistsrunning our government. In the final days of the election McCain tried to pull the same old scare tactics once again. Fortunately, people are far more frightened of four more years of Republican policies and the possibility of Sarrah Palin becoming President.

    Susan,

It wasn't the Republicans that broke the story about Obama's aunt it was the AP. As a Republican myself I don't think Obama is responsible for his aunt either, we agree there. The question I have is why did he accept her money if she wasn't a U.S. citizen?

About the personal smears and distortions I would say that Democrats are doing that to Sarah Palin and her family. I guess 'beauty' meaning 'integrity' is in the eye of the beholder and if both sides could stop the hatred we would be a better America.

I was totally turned-off to CNN during this election year because of your bias broadcasting. Your "reporters" might as well be spokepersons for Obama – which is how they come across. This election cycle exposed the complete subjectivity and manipulative liberal bent of CNN. Shame on you CNN! You've lost those of us who wanted the news minus your sniveling political slants. CNN is off-limits in my household until you at least attempt to curtail your Obama-Liberal lovefest in favor of balancing your liberal front people with an equal number of intelligent and cogent conservatives. Then again – that will not happen. You are too entrenched with liberalism to ever notice the good in any conservative!

Kathryn, do not be afraid, and you are not alone, even in the state of South Carolina. For other reasons, I have come up against your problem, reach within yourself and find your inner strength. This is one of the sad conclusions to be drawn from this most recent presidential campaign, not only how similar it has been run to the Bush/Rove campaigns of 2000 and 2004, but the platform that ignores reality. I have been back and forth to the state of Ohio for more than 30 years and, like South Carolina, Ohio is part of the rust belt. The steel industry went belly up, and the car industry followed, and that was more than 30 years ago. More recenly, hundreds of thousands of jobs were lost in the region. South Carolina had been pummelled by the textile industry's flight and massive loss of jobs. AND THOSE GUYS WANT TO ELECT JOHN MCCAIN. YOU WILL DESERVE WHAT YOU GET ON WEDNESDAY IF MCCAIN PREVAILS.

    Mizan,
Obama only met his father once at 10 for a couple days and his paternal grandmother once when he went to Kenya to do so, and hardly knows his aunt, and I would not expect him to interrogate her the rare times they met about her immigration status. The republicans are so desparate they are trying to tie him to anything to win, when it only makes it more obvious that they have nothing to offer so they have to use character and personal smears and distortions.. the republicans soooo don't deserve another 4 years1

Yes, you are right. It is a fierce battle and it has hit my home. I live in Greenville, SC. I am a caucasian,61 years old, college grad, very small business owner , mother of 2, and grandmother of 4. I am the only one in my entire family that is voting for Obama. I will be voting tomorrrow morning. What I want you to know is that I have never been persecuted, until now, because of my vote. My daughter, whom I love, called me today trying to turn my vote to McCain. When I refused, she hung up on me. At our church, flyers, were passed out, after the service. What it suggested was a vote for Obama was voting against God. This is just unbelievable to me. I WILL vote tomorrow, and it will be for Obama. For some of us, the battle is right inside our own homes.

Mr. Obama is a big time liar, hypocrite. Why?? "He said , he didn`t know that his aunt was staying in USA illegally. There is nothing wrong with it cbecause lots people are staying in USA illegally and it doesn`t and shoudn`t cost Obama anything in this election but the question is : How come a person doesn`t know about the status of his family member? I just didn`t get it. If he can`t be true to his family member then how can he be true to a Nation??"
