“I was shocked,” former Clinton Commerce Secretary Bill Daley tells CNN of a new McCain ad “I always had a good relationship with him [McCain] or I thought I did.”

He’s referring to a new McCain ad that attacks Obama for ties (or alleged ties) to some unsavory Chicago personalities, and includes Daley in the bunch. The ad features Daley along with convicted felon Tony Rezko and indicted Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich. It ends with the claim “With friends like that, Obama is not ready to lead.”

“I think he has totally sold his soul to get elected,” says Daley of McCain. And Daley charges McCain with hypocrisy on the question of lobbyists. Daley, who was President of SBC Communications, says “When I was at SBC I had to hire (McCain campaign manager) Rick Davis to see John Mccain. He wouldn’t see anyone unless you hired one of his lobbyist friends.”

In the past McCain has had high praise for Daley. The Senator has chaired the Senate Commerce Committee and had oversight of Daley’s Commerce Department. Over the years McCain has called Daley “credible” praised his “frank honest style” credited him with making a “valiant effort to clean up the Commerce Department's reputation as a dumping ground for the politically connected” and his recognized him for “Herculean efforts’ and “great work”.

Daley is an advisor to the Obama campaign and the brother of current Chicago Mayor Richard Daley.

The McCain campaign says the ad will be televised nationally.
