Mr. Gettridge says hello

Kay Jones

A few weeks ago, I blogged about stopping by Mr. Herbert Gettridge’s house to check on him after Hurricane Gustav passed through New Orleans. Well, I finally got through to him today, and he said he made it through with little to no damage. He had evacuated to Baton Rouge and said he should’ve stayed home since it was worse up there.

In the years since Katrina, he’s been able to have his wife move home, as well as having children and grandchildren come and stay in their home. He told me that he’s finally getting neighbors again and he looks forward to having more.

He also wanted to let you all know that he appreciates your prayers and thoughts of concern. He is New Orleans, and plans to be there for a long time to come.

Back in January, we talked to New Orleans resident Herbert Gettridge about the struggle to rebuild a city.

Thanks Anderson for not forgetting about Mr Gettridge and checking up on him. It's so nice to hear he has his "old lady" back with him. Their relationship is what we all spend our lives looking for. I hope they have many more years together and I hope God spares them future storms. They deserve to spend their remaining years in peace and joy.

    Thanks again for the update.

Glad to see he's doing well, his family is back, and his neighborhood is returning. It's nice to see positives come out of a city many of us will always love and never give up on.

Kay, Thanks so much for the update about Mr. Gettridge and his family. He's a real inspiration, especially in never giving up. Glad to hear that things are improving for him in his neighbourhood. He's a modern day pioneer and I wish he and his wife many years of happiness in their restored home in the lower ninth, and safety in upcoming storms.

THAT'S WONDERFUL!!!! Thank you so much for the update! he's right Baton Rouge got it a lot worse this time around. People don't expect it to be so bad that way because it's so far inland but guess that isn't an expectation anymore.

    thanks again!

I am SO glad that you all kept up with your promise and found Mr. Gettridge!! I wondered about him and hoped that he was alright during Gustav.

I am so glad that things are getting better for him and his family and that his life is getting back to normal again. Hopefully no other hurricanes will come his way and he can live in peace with his family in NOLA.

I am so glad Mr. Gettridge is doing so well and has his family with him and that he's getting neighbors. Hopefully for him life is almost normal again. I admire Mr. Gettridge for what he has done – not many people I know these days would go back by themselves and rebuild their house piece by piece. With citizens like the Gettridges New Orleans will endure.
