Oh no, Rick still doesn't have a poncho! He needs to bundle up, or he's going to get pneumonia!

Thanks to all the bloggers from Texas and all over the Gulf for keeping us posted on weather conditions. It's good (& reassuring) to hear from you all.

    Be safe.

For large ships it is better to be at sea than in port during a storm.

In a port the ship gets battered against to wharf or shore.

Near shore the waves are higher.

In deep water the waves are mostly beneath the surface.

Navy ships try to leave port when a major storm approaches. But ideally you leave far enough ahead of the storm that you can avoid it.

    David,

It's okay. We can do both...we're multi-taskers. I have family throughout the Gulf Coast of Texas and I'm in constant contact via cell phone and e-mail..all why espousing the virtues of sending new blood to Washington.

Our gas prices here in British Columbia, Canada, jumped 14 cents per liter today and "they" are b;aming it on Hurricane Ike. WOW! Please stay safe.

Since the eye of the hurricane is so large will it be possible to get rescue aircraft to that stranded freighter during the time the eye passes over?

You never know, that guy could later be arrested for child endangerment, maybe after the storm.

Do the people who decided to stay, despite the mandatory evacuation order, have to pay if they have to be rescued, or is it done at taxpayer expense?

"Bay Buchanan’s remarks are right on the money. We’re not trying to elect an expert that is going to be a know-it-all and micromanage. It’s about judgment and leadership ability."

But most mavericks micromanage their favorite topics, and ignore other topics.

Managing a country is about having a vision and consensus building to have other people work towards it - not going off on your own maverick style alienating others.

Betty Ann, I'm sure they didn't plan to be out there. many freighters have low top speeds, and they probably couldn't get out of the way in time, then propulsion failed.

I once dreamed of living in a little house by the beach...

Obviously, that dream is dead right now.

Betty, it was out there before it was a complete threat, it was because of Ike that they lost power and were unable to be rescued, so it isn't fully their fault.

  16. Greg Wood

He put them in danger in the first place by not evacuating when ordered. It took the police to convince him to leave. That is child endangerment.

The people on that freighter must be scared to death.

Hello everyone - It is so good, at a time when a catastrophic storm is sweeping in over Texas, to see how you are rallying behind the citizens there. Almost seems like we ought to put aside the presidential race for another day, after the storm passes. CNN can rightly be proud of Anderson, Gary and others who are once again braving the worst of it to bring live coverage.

God, those freighter sailors need a miracle. Pray for them, guys.

I can believe this guy was going to ride it out with his kids. People are desensitized to storms and don't think it'll happen to them until they need to be rescued. They don't take this stuff seriously. They forget storms like Katrina where so many died. And sadly, they'll let their kids suffer due to their own false bravado and ignorance.

I love CNN. You guys are the ultimate news organization. Keep up the great coverage!

Can you believe that a freighter would be out in a Cat 3 hurricane? that is so weird to me. Esotericly speaking.

I think these people are just selfish and figure they can call the police. I think they should be arrested and fined.

2 trains were same on the track and collided each other, I think he didn’t know other train is coming this way and hit the train. maybe he didn’t see that train coming……. 20 people killed and most people dozen injuried.........

Sarah Palin says she raises her children the way male governors do.

Is she saying her husband is the primary care giver for the children?

    September 12, 2008 at 11:43 pm |
  26. Letitia

    Good catch Eli!
Palin is very "sneaky" with semantics. I am hopeful that the debates will challenge and uncover more of her views, policies and "opinions."

  27. Alex Dzeda - Austin, TX

Greg, because he did manage to get the kids out alive I would believe.

Also, just an update: Westlake hills (Austin Area) is now full of evacuees, and they're going to West Ridge Middle school, WHS and HCMS are full.

It's sad that people are ignoring the authorities. Once they realize that they need help, it will be too late.

why did the police not arrest the man for child endangerment?

EJ, Ike is not a Cat 4 right now BUT there are wind data from weather radar and aircraft indicate winds *near* Cat 4 strength just a few hundred feet above the surface of the storm.

To be a Cat 4, those wind speeds would have to be happening on the surface of the storm.

I think she did pretty well for her first national interview.

I guess people on both sides will view Palin through their own political biases as shown on this blog. It looks as though people in the middle will decide this one. Deep down I’m rooting for her.

Late this afternoon a profound sense of sadness hit me like a ton of bricks. I just figured I was picking up on my relatives out in the midwest who were burying an aunt today or maybe it was the emotions of those in the path of the approaching hurricane. I knew something had happened as I'm pretty sensitive to this stuff – when a close friend died years ago, I sensed the exact moment of his death even though he was 2000 miles away.

Prayers for all those who have lost a loved one in the MetroLink crash near L.A.

I couldnt disagree more with Bay. If you supported Hillary it goes way back to 92. I supported Hillary not because she was a women but because I know her. I know the good and the bad. You also know she is pro choice. Allowing women to make that very personal and private decision. Palin is in no way Hillary.

If the freighter stay afloat until it gets into water shallow enough to anchor in, even if the winds make it drag the anchor, the anchor should keep its bow towards the wind.

Once the bow is into the wind the likelihood of capsizing drops quiet a bit.

Am I the only democrat who feels a little sympathy for Sarah Palin? I just think she's totally out of her league right now – I kinda like her for a neighbor, but she is just not ready for everybody, right now. Maybe later – but right now she just has'nt been around the world block enough to make calls in the White House – is'nt it obvious? She's a sharp, but not open mind – yet – in my opinion. It's not her fault, it's McCain's – he should know better – but he likes to win.

How does Bay Buchanan live with herself? Can she really support Palin or is she just paid to say good things about her. No, she is not qualified to be VP. Why are we dancing around this?

My thoughts and prayers go out to the people affected by IKE. Please stay safe.
I just saw a clip of Sarah Palin's interview with Charlie Gibson. Weak. Then I heard Bay Buchanan's inane comments. Even weaker. I would love to see someone OTHER than Bay Buchanan on the panel. I agree with a previous blogger from this evening. Bay Buchanan would agree with Sarah Palin if she were howling at the moon!! Enough said.

David Gergen isn't right. Obama had major speeches on education and the economy this week. The media isn't covering them!!

Both candidates say they want to talk about issues, but they are allowing themselves to get caught up in silly schoolyard tauntings.

Respecting people's "opinions" about abortion is vastly different from respecting their rights to one. Pay close attention to Gov. Palin's words – she's very sneaky.

First of all, God bless you and keep you safe. Secondly, the citizens of the US should realize that this election year is not about the cadidates, it is really about you and me and who we decide to put in there. Honestly now, do you really want more of the same and an addition of someone who looks very nervous on her first job interview and also trigger happy to lead this country? I know and trust that the American people are not stuck on stupid!

EJ: He said that higher up in the hurricane, atmosphere I'm guessing, the winds were reported stronger than those on the ground and were in the Cat 4 range which could affect the high rise buildings in Houston.
