Watching CNN as I do every night from Calgary, Alberta Canada – my thoughts and prayers are with everyone in the gulf coast area, and in the Galveston, Houston area. I pray that everyone stays safe.

The trees behind Anderson in Houston are starting to get blown around a lot..and you can hear the wind through the microphone.

Palin is an insult to my intelligence.

    Houston virtually has 3 downtowns:
Your weather man keeps just showing downtown (CBD) Houston, there are more high-rise buildings and people exposed to the hurricane in the Texas Medical Center (which is the largest hospital complex in the world) and The Galleria Area, where the builds are mostly 30 to 40 story residential high-rises buildings.

What's wrong with studying the mating habits of sea crabs? all those alaskan fisheries, it makes sense

WOW. Sarah Palin is full of herself.

    September 12, 2008 at 10:25 pm |
  8. Teri (Dallas)

You don't have to be a democrat to see that Palin isn't telling the truth and is putting a spin on what she says to keep from getting nailed down.

I really wonder if sarah palin even believes the stuff that comes out of her mouth

  10. Eileen

Anderson, I am glad that you chose to cover a safer location that to be at Galveston. Please stay safe out there all CNN staff!

Gas prices have increased here in IL in Springfield I last saw it rise to $5.19/gal.

From seeing the dopler it looks like New Orleans should be getting it too. Can you tell us more about that?

    September 12, 2008 at 10:24 pm |
  12. letitia

I hope that people, especially women, really listen to Palin's positiions and make an informed decision–rather than one based on gender.

    Connie,
Nope, they won't leave that breach broken, they wanted to stay home, they refused to leave their home, I remember that time people died there in New Orleans around 3 years ago......

I am in the northwest area of houston. The already our power is blinking in and out and storm is still hours away. The wind gust are going crazy. With as many hurricanes as I have experienced and storms still seem to amazes me. I hope all the CNN crew that are here with me are staying put and being safe. I hope Anderson only gets wind because if downtown houston gets alot of rain it usually floods.

I don't agree with Palin's stand on abortion or stem cell research, but I think she did a pretty good job during this interview. She was asked questions that the media hasn't even asked Obama.

  16. Connie in SLC UT

Sara Pallin is annoying. I liked the way she dodged the gay question while she was smilling.

    September 12, 2008 at 10:23 pm |
  17. Kevin

Have some friends who live close to Galveston. Rich and Lori, hope you and all your family are safe.

    September 12, 2008 at 10:23 pm |
  18. Mike, Syracuse NY

Sarah, Tracy, I guess you didn't hear the part where she said it was her personal opinion. Many have religious or ethical objections to abortion. They have that right.

    September 12, 2008 at 10:23 pm |
  19. MaryBeth

Sarah: the same way the govt did before Roe v. Wade. They make it illegal.

It blows my mind how people ignore mandantory evacs. Is any material thing really worth your life or that of a loved one?

That thing looks nasty. Please stay safe, all of you! It also looks cold ...Is it? I saw 84 degrees!!!

  22. Lorie Ann, Buellton, California

I agree Jo Ann, I know people want to ride it out, but when they need to be rescued it requires someone else to risk their lives to save them.

    September 12, 2008 at 10:22 pm |
  23. Will

If they get voted in, they will take abortions and other things too.

    September 12, 2008 at 10:22 pm |
  24. Tracy

I wonder what determines how violent any given hurricane season will be. I don't remember any hurricanes of note happening since Katrina. Weird.

    September 12, 2008 at 10:22 pm |
  25. Macario Obillo

Anderson, how do you expect people to believe the grave danger to the people who stay in their homes from the onslought of the hurricane when CNN reporters are out there braving the rain and the winds? Are those reporters trying to show-off?

    September 12, 2008 at 10:22 pm |
  26. Stan

How totally irresponsible of CNN to have reporters within 45 yards of
the seawall that is about to be breached by the storm, while authorities are trying to convince residents to evacuate. Reporting the extreme conditions does not necessarily require first hand injuries to convince people that the storm is a severe threat.

    September 12, 2008 at 10:21 pm |
  27. Karen Hussion

Gary & Rob – please be more clear about the dire consequences of the water surge predicted being the reason for predictions of likely death to those in residential housing. Thanks!

  28. Tracy

Jesus, Palin's gonna take us back about 50 years in the civil rights movement.

    September 12, 2008 at 10:20 pm |
  29. Sarah, Vegas

How can a VP tell us that we can't have an abortion?

    September 12, 2008 at 10:20 pm |
  30. Sue

The cost of an average evacuation is $2000 per family for hotel, gas, eating out, etc. The price of the stress and trauma is immeasurable. Here in Fla., we faced 4 in a row the year of Katrina. Families really do have to make hard choices of which ones are worthy of evacuation. Of course, this means ridicule from the rest of the country if your choice is wrong.

    September 12, 2008 at 10:20 pm |
  31. Jo Ann, Ohio

I hope that everyone left because if they didn't they will be putting rescuers at risk and that isn't right.

    September 12, 2008 at 10:19 pm |
  32. David, Indiana

That's a good question Joe. Also those waves hitting the sea wall during the day can be incredibly dangerous. I couldn't believe someone was walking their dogs right by the edge of the wall, that earlier footage

    September 12, 2008 at 10:19 pm |
  33. Carol

Anderson, please be careful, stay safe.
    Don't take any unnecessary chances.

Did New Orleans have any evacuation orders due to possible levee breaches?

    September 12, 2008 at 10:18 pm |
  36. Teri (Dallas)

I lived in New Orleans 2001-2004 and the LaFitte levee has gotten breached before.

    September 12, 2008 at 10:18 pm |
  37. Tracy

It seems that levees are just a bad idea. Don't build your city next to the ocean if the land is below sea-level, move it a mile or so over onto a nice, dry hill.

  38. sam, ca

Gas prices held today out here, I saw $3.98/gal at a couple of stations.

    September 12, 2008 at 10:18 pm |
  39. Jeff in TN

I am located in Paris, TN which is in Northwest TN. Yesterday I bought gas at $3.50 a gallon and this afternoon regular gas jumped to $3.95 per gallon with waiting lines as much as fifteen to thirty minutes for gas. No matter where you are Hurricane Ike is likely to affect your pocketbook. If gas prices haven't already risen in your area you should fill up everything you own. It looks like the oil companies are going to cash in on this catastrophe no matter where you are. Our prayers are with all those along the Gulf Coast.

    September 12, 2008 at 10:17 pm |
  40. Heather

People need to have a evacuation plan and need to have someone who will open their home to them in any emergency.

    September 12, 2008 at 10:17 pm |
  41. MaryBeth

Alex: thanx so much for your updates....I hope you are in a safe place, or can get to a safe place in a short period of time.

Huh... I hate how Anderson always puts himself right at deaths door! I hope he and all in Texas stay safe!
Anderson you are in my Prayers!

  43. Allison

Hi Anderson and the whole CNN crew! my whole family has secured our homes and praying for the best! All of us in Houston Love you! If it were not for the curfew we would be downtown where you are right now asking for an autograph in the wind! Be safe and God Bless!

    September 12, 2008 at 10:16 pm |
  44. Sandie, San Bruno, Ca

God Bless our relatives in Galveston & Texas City. Hope they all left.

    September 12, 2008 at 10:16 pm |
  45. Tracy

In my hometown in VA, the gas price only went up 30 cents to $3.64. If they're gonna hike up the price, they could at least be more uniform about it. Now it's obvious to me that some of those stations are just ripping us off.

    BettyAnn,
I am sorry about your son have lost power...... I hope your son will be ok........

    September 12, 2008 at 10:15 pm |
  47. MaryBeth

Mike: they did have warning...just not enough..and people didn't think it would be that bad...did you read the story CNN did on it? Sounds like the entire city was destroyed and they had to completely rebuild.

    September 12, 2008 at 10:15 pm |
  48. Joe

Can the waves erode the sand underneath the seawall that they are standing on? How would they know if it was happening?

    September 12, 2008 at 10:15 pm |
  49. Larry

Good to see Anderson on the job!! We can always count on the best reporting when Anderson and his crew are on top of the story. I hope Rob and Gary and the crew stay safe in that hotel!

    Take care everyone!

Does the price of gas go up in hurricanes of The Gulf because of refining American Gulf oil, or are these refineries refining middle east oil too? My point is if it's strictly Gulf oil then I guess american drilled oil is having an impact on gas prices. And if they're refining middle east oil in the gulf – well, that seems silly does'nt it?
