How do average working class americans afford to pay for gas to leave town, pay for hotels and food and lose paychecks due to their cities being shutdown?

Alright, Cedar Creek Elementary in Austin has lost power, or they just shut all the electricity off at one time, probably to save it for the other two schools which are both shelters.

Those red slicker's don't seem like they are giving too much protection. All the guys look like they're taking a pretty hard pounding and are soaking wet.

Imagine how it was in 1900 when Galveston was hit by something like this with no warning.

Gary holds tight as Anderson's hair bristles , Good luck to the crew down south... I know the night is still young.

Anderson, Is the area under a state of emergency? Also, my friends' home is on clear lake. How much danger is there home in?

    Connie,
I think that is real damage oil but they are safe or secure to protect the oils but I agree with you...... that is very high price $5.00 gallon dollars.....

I had a friend who was an AP photographer who literally had the paint on his car sandblasted off as he drove down the beach to cover a hurricane.
If it can do that to a car what can it do to a person? These reporters really need to take cover.

How did this storm get to be so big within a couple of days? It's insanely huge now!

Gary deserves a raise. He is getting the worst of it! I hope that Gary and the entire CNN crew will be safe and has a safe play to bunker down at after Ike hits land. Gary and the CNN crew will be in my prayers and well as the State of Texas.

Please have Gary and Rob go into the Hotel. Their lives are more precious than any reporting from the shore, at this point.

My son lives in Houston and has already lost power.

Hi all. Hope everyone in the path of the storm stays safe tonight.
Ali Velshi is at the refineries and I was wondering why the prices here in Charlotte, NC shot up $1.50 in 6 hours today. Is this price manipulation or is it legal?

  18. David, Indiana

Hi Anderson, you guys take care down there in Houston and all CNNers down there in Texas, prayers out to everyone in texas, hope you all get through doing well. I've missed a lot of reporting but what i've seen has been great

I'm glad Gary Tuchman and Rob Marciano are getting ready to go in, looks way too rough out there

I haven't heard anything about FEMA, Homeland Security or any Federal help, are they in Texas standing by until needed?

Why do we have so many oil refineries in the gulf with all the potential for damage? GAS AT 5.00 PER GALLON already sure seems like corruption to me

    September 12, 2008 at 10:08 pm |
  21. Ken in NC

My gas in Wilmington, NC today went from $3.99 a gallon to $6.29 a gallon. It is part of a rip off. They hiked the price of the fuel already in the ground.

  24. Betty Ann, Nacogdoches,TX

How DO they get the media out of Galveston?

    September 12, 2008 at 10:07 pm |
  25. MaryBeth

Mike: I heard that 60% is what the mayor of Galveston estimates...yesterday it was only 40%...

    September 12, 2008 at 10:06 pm |
  26. Jo Ann, Ohio

There goes the price of gas again!

    September 12, 2008 at 10:05 pm |
  27. Teri (Dallas)

Would it be possible for someone to do a visual comparison (size of eye, sustained wind speed, total size across) between Katrina and Ike?

    September 12, 2008 at 10:05 pm |
  28. sam, ca

wow, anderson it looks pretty tame where you are compared to poor Rob & Gary in Galveston. Rick looks like he's getting pounded as well. This storm seems to be a huge water maker.

    September 12, 2008 at 10:05 pm |
  29. Mike, Syracuse NY

Is it true that only 60% of Galveston people left with the mandatory evacuation? Didn't they learn anything from Katrina? People will now have to risk their lives to save these people.

  30. Carly,AL

hello everyone, another thing that is craz is gas prices....this morning and early afternoon here they were at 3.59 by 5pm 4 dollars and up....crazy

    September 12, 2008 at 10:04 pm |
  31. Tracy

Wow, I still can't understand why anyone would want to stay in Galveston, knowing how fierce this storm is.

Sooo, why did CNN ship Gary and co. out there if being there = certain death?

    September 12, 2008 at 10:04 pm |
  32. Dan

    Anderson, please stay safe.

I certainly hope Gary and Rob are not going to stay on the shore too long. Go inside.

    September 12, 2008 at 10:02 pm |
  43. Alex Dzeda - Austin, TX

Also, here in Austin, the Delco center is full, Westlake High is, and I assume HCMS (Hill country middle school) will be as well pretty soon, as I saw at least 300 people there, and we only have around 900 students there.

    September 12, 2008 at 10:02 pm |

I was caught up in the mass exodus out of Houston for 17 hours when Hurricane Rita and can only hope that those with any foresight made their decisions to leave early enough.
